Hey folks, I basically have finally run into the brick wall that is the RPG Maker 2003 battle system.
Turn speed just doesn't make any sense to me! You broke me, you damn lovable rpg engine.
So, I've decided to port my project over to rpg maker VX, so I can have a nice turn-based battle system again.
This comes with it's own problems (mostly having to manually map again, and having to figure out my skills again) but I'd rather this game was fun instead of easy for me to make.
Feel free to mock me in the comments.

Yeah, basically everything will look like it does right now in 2003, it's just more work for me. I would just like to say, however, that whoever decided that autotiles should go from 3 by 3 to 2 by 2 should be flogged. FLOGGED.
and shush you, you encouraged me!

Quitter.

Whaddya mean you can't set directional passability!?
Ugh... le groan.
Things are supposed to get more advanced, not less.

Little mini update.
I've got the items all converted, as well as all the graphics (which is a nightmare in it's own right) Mapping is, as everyone already knows, a bit more of a pain, but with a little help from my hex editor, everything will be fine.
All that's left now is: Monsters and Troops, Skills, and copying the maps.
I already started with the converting of maps - it's not easy. screen widths and heights are slightly different in VX than they were in 2003. for example, in 2003, the screen was 15 tiles high - in vx, only 13 tiles. "progress"...
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Other than that, not TOO many hiccups. occasionally things that worked in 2003 won't work at all in vx, like partial status resistance from items, but whatever. not a big deal.
Oh! also, sorry that the css looks pretty half-assed - that's because it is at the moment. it will look a bit more cohesive eventually.

I know it's too late, but there's a patch from Cherry to make the 2k3 battle system turned based. Oh wells :/

Considering that having to re-make my maps in VX is like having to murder my own children, I will try and find time tonight to see how the dynrpg stuff works for my project.
Also, I didn't really like the dynrpg, thing, so I continued with my conversion.
I have a nice way of remaking my maps:
FIRST: Open up both VX and 2003
SECOND: TURN VX window SEMI TRANSPARENT AND LAYER THEM ON TOP OF EACH OTHER
THIRD: TRACE WITH NORMAL GROUND TILE AND SAVE
FOURTH: OPEN HEX EDITOR, MASS REPLACE CORNER TILES WITH NEW CORNER TILES
FIFTH: ADD IN ALL THE EXTRAS AND EVENTS

If the battle system is the only reason your changing, have you considered just going back to 2K instead of VX? It's a really painless switch if you've already made a lot. You've probably already thought of that though, and I'm guessing there's a reason you're not.

There are plenty of reasons, one of which is I really like having the option to change the battle text of each skill and give them a bit of personality.

seeing you post on this game makes me very happy
"Mock!!!!"
Though, honestly, it's a shame about the setback but I think this kind of commitment to quality and stuff is awesome. Just stumbled over this game now and it looks great--good luck!

Hi Hexatona,
It's possible to custom-make your own battle system in 2k3, even easy. Contact me for more information. ...It's likely that this comment will reach you far too late to be of any meaning, but I still hope. I hope your creation process is going well.

Thanks fellas. Also Zach, I kinda ended up really liking the switch, so I'll stick to the new one.
Although, If someone knows how to tell me when someone posts something on one of your own games easily, that'd be nice. I'm subscribed to like a bazillion games so anything posted to Ghost World kinda gets lost you know?
