The UnOfficial Squaresoft MUD is free of charge, and can be accessed from almost any computer with an internet connection. There are two ways to connect to a MUD. You can use either of these methods to log onto UOSSMUD, though the second one is recommended.
The first method is to open a command-line prompt and type "telnet uossmud.sandwich.net 9000". In Windows, you can open the Start Menu and click "Run..." to open a window where you can type this. This will connect your computer to UOSSMUD using your operating system's default telnet program. However, this program can be cumbersome and obnoxious; depending on your operating system, it may limit lines to 80 characters, or not show you the text you are typing, or have display problems if a new line of text appears while you are in the middle of typing something. Most people prefer to use the second method: a MUD client.
The second method is to download and install a MUD client which you use to connect to UOSSMUD. MUD clients are programs which connect to MUDs and usually offer additional helpful features, such as aliases, macros, triggers, and speedwalks. Some of the more popular MUD clients include MUSHclient, Zmud and Gmud for Windows, as well as Mudlet, Rapscallion and Savitar for Macintosh. There are also clients which run in a web browser, such as Mud Connector's java client or their flash client. A more complete list of MUD clients available can be found at Mud Connector's client list.
If you connect using a client, you will need to know that the server for UOSSMUD is uossmud.sandwich.net, and the port is 9000.
