My newest game! An all original story, with twists.

This contains the first 3 chapters of the Game.

Genre:

Action, dark fantasy, Drama

Setting

-This game takes place in Feudal and in the Sengoku period of Japan. The "feudal" period of Japanese history, dominated by the powerful regional families (daimyō) and the military rule of warlords (shōgun), stretched from 1185 to 1868.

The Edo period, a Period of war, politics and conflict between European and Asian Religion.

-The Sengoku period or 'Warring States period' in Japanese history was a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict that lasted roughly from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century. The Sengoku period in Japan would eventually lead to the unification of political power under the Tokugawa shogunate. Christians and firearms first arrived during this period to Japan.

History

During the Edo period, also called the Tokugawa period, the administration of the country was shared by over two hundred daimyō in a federation governed by the Tokugawa shogunate. The Tokugawa clan, leader of the victorious eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara, was the most powerful of them and for fifteen generations monopolized the title of Sei-i Taishōgun (often shortened to shōgun). With their headquarters at Edo (present-day Tōkyō), the Tokugawa commanded the allegiance of the other daimyō, who in turn ruled their domains with a rather high degree of autonomy.

The Tokugawa shogunate carried out a number of significant policies. They placed the samurai class above the commoners: the agriculturists, artisans, and merchants. They enacted sumptuary laws limiting hair style, dress, and accessories. They organized commoners into groups of five and held all responsible for the acts of each individual. To prevent daimyō from rebelling, the shōguns required them to maintain lavish residences in Edo and live at these residences on a rotating schedule; carry out expensive processions to and from their domains; contribute to the upkeep of shrines, temples, and roads; and seek permission before repairing their castles.

Genesis:

The "Christian problem" was, in effect, a problem of controlling both the Christian daimyo in Kyūshū and their trade with the Europeans. By 1612, the shogun's retainers and residents of Tokugawa lands had been ordered to forswear Christianity. More restrictions came in 1616 (the restriction of foreign trade to Nagasaki and Hirado, an island northwest of Kyūshū), 1622 (the execution of 120 missionaries and converts), 1624 (the expulsion of the Spanish), and 1629 (the execution of thousands of Christians). Finally, the Closed Country Edict of 1635 prohibited any Japanese from traveling outside Japan or, if someone left, from ever returning.

The christian problem reached its highlight under Ieyasu's successors Tokugawa Hidetada and Tokugawa Iemitsu, particularly after the predominantly Christian population of Kyūshū had risen in the Shimabara Rebellion against the shogunate in 1637. The uprising was crushed brutally; more than 40,000 Christians were killed. Authorities of persecution were set up, with the goal of a nationwide persecution and extermination of the Christians. Anyone who was suspected of being a Christian had to abandon Christianity publicly and dishonor Christian symbols, which were called 'fumie', , as well as register in the Buddhist register of faith of Buddhist temples and visit those regularly. Those who refused to abandon their Christian faith were executed, often through public crucifixion or incineration. :)

Shimabara Rebellion:

It is an uprising in southwestern Japan in 1637–1638 during the Edo period. It largely involved peasants, most of them Catholic Christians. The shogun vs Samurai Christians and peasants converted to christianity.

She says "That damned dragon has been spotted north of here". Maybe "accursed" is better?

And I also agree with the text speed. First time through is maybe not so bad, but if a player is killed and has to sit through the same dialogue again without skipping they're going to get pretty annoyed.

I'm downloading the new version now so I'll give you my thoughts later ^_^
Okay, I played to part 2 in the town. I couldn't seem to find anywhere to go after wandering around for 5 minutes so I gave up. Is that the end of the demo? There's one big building with two doors you can't enter and a sign you can't read. So, here's what I thought as I was playing:

-I like the mapping and atmosphere, but a couple of the houses in the town look a bit flat. Making the roof a bit wider would fix this.
-I was a bit confused by the whole bit with the christian cross/gate and random Japanese chanting. I understand now that it was to reach the dragon's cave, but there had been no indication or mention of having to pass through this gate until then. Kojiro seemed to know all about it, but the player doesn't. I think that's not good. Maybe have it mentioned earlier what he's looking for and why?
-The battle system was interesting. Went on a bit long, but I can imagine with more allies and enemies it will be good. I found the healing items to be a bit weak, especially against the dragon (it did more damage per turn than I could heal with a rice ball). And....One-Winged Angel? Really? It's a great tune but I think too well-known. I just kept thinking of FFVII instead of your game ^_^
-In the 9 years betwen parts 1 & 2, what were all these dragons doing? Ittosai was talking about them coming to get revenge and stuff, but why suddenly 9 years later? Maybe you could explain this?
-Finally, the swearing...sorry to keep on about it but it really doesn't fit and in fact made me laugh (which is presumably unintentional). "That fucking dragon" indeed...I just can't imagine a 17th century Japanese samurai speaking like that...
-Why are there Japanese dango sweets outside the brothel? ^_^

If you would like any more feedback on a specific area please feel free to ask!
Thanks for your feedback, and yes the demo ends in Ichihara 1660 when the massacre of Gion happens :)

If you go to any country to any given age, be sure that they curse, Yes, even 2000 yrs ago and specially if you are in danger of dying."

-Why are there Japanese dango sweets outside the brothel? ^_^ "sweets and whores, what more can you ask, when you are older you will be able to go in there"

what are the things you like the most about the game?
Haven't fired up the new demo yet, but I do wanna jump in and say that I think some swearing is perfectly appropriate in a game involving samurai. While they are a courtly warrior class, they are still a warrior class. Before they were legitimized as the upper class of Tokugawa-era society, they were basically just warlords, who would protect a territory in return for pay. Even after they were legitimized, there was certainly nothing to keep them from using strong language in the right context. Moreover, because Christianity was late in coming to Japan, there wasn't really the social taboo of "if you speak these specific words, you will be going to hell." So, while all samurai may not cuss all the time, a samurai with military training or a rough manner would probably swear plenty in the right context.

Also, it's important to note here that a lot of the words that get translated as swearing in English are still coarse language in Japanese, but have slightly different meanings or have more emphasis in Japanese than they do in English, so the translator uses a swear to add that emphasis back in. An example of this would be 'temae' or 'kisama', which both mean 'you', but in most modern contexts are so informal that they're deliberately vulgar. Showing this through translation can be a headache without adding context. You could write 'kisama' as 'you!!!', but you could also write it as 'you bastard!'
Actually, I think part of the problem is translating from Japanese. Sure, samurai would have used rough or manly language on occasion. But for me f- and c- seem out of place, partly because in many ways they are too strong compared to Japanese equivalents. Have you ever heard the saying that there are no real swear words in Japanese? It's pretty true, or at least the most common words are far less offensive than good old anglo-saxon ;-) Of course, we're talking about a language other than English here so I guess it's a matter of interpretation.

Anyway, it's up to the developer. I just said that, for me, the game has a nice atmosphere of feudal Japan with the graphics and music and it would be a shame if this was ruined by the dialogue. Just to clarify, I'm not a prude (I'm currently making a game of Battle Royale and there's a hell of a lot of swearing in that). Nor am I saying there should be no swearing, just "drat" and "golly". But I think the choice of words and the situations when used need to be watched. If it becomes overused it will become unintentionally comic.

Christians were murdered in Japan for their beliefs, there was a war in Japan because of this. Just like in the muslim world a lof of christians symbols are banned. :)

Hell existed in Japanese culture before christians arrived in Japan. Jigoku/Yomi in shinto religion.

"The "Christian problem" was, in effect, a problem of controlling both the Christian daimyo in Kyūshū and their trade with the Europeans. I will add more about this in my game.:

Those who refused to abandon their Christian faith were executed, often through public crucifixion or incineration.

:)
I did not want to reveal much of the plot but you guys pushed me to this lol.

I updated the main page, now you can see more of the plot and characters, In my full game, I will surely explain the christian symbol in the demo. :)
Including elements of an underground Christian movement in the plot sounds like a really good idea. It would certainly be something that isn't touched on much in Edo period work. You could have Christian magic against Shinto magic ^_^

Actually, although the persecution (like all religious persecutions everywhere) was terrible, today I'm kind of glad it happened. One of the nice things about living in Japan is the complete lack of interference by religious groups in politics and daily life. I never get Buddhists or Shintoists trying to push their beliefs on me, or protesting against gay rights/whatever they think is morally wrong. In fact, the only people who come knocking on my door are Jehovah's witnesses-a Christian sect. Shrines and temples are a part of life, traditional but (on the whole) not inspiring the fervour and fanaticism that characterises Judao-Christian religion. It was really obvious when I went to South Korea over New Year, a country where they didn't repel the Christians and is now (according to Korean friends) about 50% Christian. And there they had people singing hymns in the street and religious nutjobs on the underground talking about Hell. And then a Lady Gaga concert was recently made adults-only because of Christian groups in Korea.

Sorry, got a bit side-tracked...anyway, if you haven't read it already I strongly recommend Shusaku Endo's The Samurai. It's about an Edo period samurai sent to do trade negotiations with the Portuguese and the suspicions of him becoming infected with Christianity. Endo is himself a Japanese Christian, so his perspective is perhaps a little different.
Um...didn't Francis Xavier die a hundred years before this game is set? So is he going to be a ghost or in flashbacks or something?

I believe he arrived in Japan between 1540-1545 after the french inquisition in Europe.

Amakusa shiro will be the leader of the CHristian rebellion but Francisco started everything under orders.
Oh papasan I did not know that you are from or living in japan, if you know about shinto rituals and stuff please let me know via PM.
To clarify:

Yes, I'm aware of Yomi. But it's not (as far as I know) typically a place you get sent for swearing.

And, while most Japanese swears do not not sound as strong as English ones, the intention behind using them is pretty much the same.

I do like the kakure christian angle for the plot, by the way. And I think I have read some of Endo's stuff before. He's good. Ryunosuke Akutagawa also has a really amazing short story about Japan's attitude towards religion (and Christianity in general), but I'm at a loss for what it was called. Essentially, it was about how, instead of conquering all the other gods in Japan, the christian god just became part of them.

Lastly, for what it's worth, I've spent some time in Japan (although probably not as much as papasan.) I've been to a couple of shrines and done a little research on shinto, and also stayed briefly with a buddhist priest (who was also Christian, because Japan.) Honestly, you might want to try just youtubing shinto rituals and watching what comes up. There's a lot of variety, and unless you're going for perfect historical accuracy (hint: I do not advise this), your best bet it to get a feel for the basics and then wing it.

I do approve of how much research you're doing for this game, though.
Thank you I want to make my best game yet. I ignore if you go to yomi for swearing or not, what I was saying its that hell was not introduced into japan by christians.

Just on side note I am christian and I do not believe in hell lol. Just as paganism is created, paganism is in christianity today:
http://bible-truths.com/lake16-A.html
Huh. Cool.

I'm not christian, but I think scripture is fascinating. I'll admit I only skimmed, but that was an interesting read all the same.
Hehe yeah you can see how paganism is infiltrated in Christianism. there are 4 topics total on hell in the bible on that page if you want to read more, I only read the first two. I am also translating all of that into spanish, if you have spanish friends. www.shaddai.weebly.com

I will work more on my game this weekend. :)
More feedback from testing:

-still some minor grammatical problems with the dialog. Missing punctuation (commas, periods,) random capital letters.

-boat+boating music is great.

-I can't help but get Gasaraki-y vibes from that intro with the makai gate. I'm hoping that whatever was on the other side is going to be some sort of terrifying elder god, although I won't be too surprised if it isn't.

-random battles are really frequent. I had one happen 2-3 steps after the one before it. Three times in a row.

-Shredding guitar riff that follows combat is nice, but goes on for quite a while.

-After X number of attacks each, the Shinuk (spiders) run out of attacks and do nothing for the rest of the combat. Not sure what is up with this.

-CRASH BUG

Unable to find Audio/BGM/Treachery

-Points where movement between maps is possible are undefined.
oh, that is a bad bug, as a quick work around go into the audio/BGM and copy a song an rename it Treachery. :S I will fix this in next demo release
What about the thing with the spiders? Do they run out of bullets for their glocks? :)
I fixed the spider thing, they are using a dual attack and ran out of energy. :)
