Progress Report

Update on progress

I'm currently going over some ideas for this game, so development will likely recommence within the next couple of months.

Also, after taking a good look at Act 1, I'm not entirely happy with it. (What I did seemed OK at the time, but not so much now.) So, I'll be doing a revised version of this Act.

Also, I'll be relaunching the Prologue section complete with the the new face set graphics. More news on the relaunch soon !!

Project on hold (but not cancelled)

Due to necessary improvements and changes I need to make to this game, I'm going to put all production of the game and all of its side projects on hold until next January.

More news on the progress on these changes will be printed on this blog within the next few weeks.

** UPDATE ** Due to the game being changed, I've temporarily removed the download of Act 1. This will be reinstated in a couple of months once the game has been improved.

Progress Report

Act 2's New Features

After I finish redoing all of the face graphics to the new style (see the previous blog for more info on this) I will officialy be starting work on Act 2.

This Act will be much bigger than the previous Acts as it will introduce the world map screen and a few new towns and dungeons. Most of these locations will feature side quests to complete (and possibly a secret character ?)

Also, the Romantic Interests menu will also be unlocked in this Act, enabling you to begin to pursue romantic relationships or friendships between your party members.

That's all I'm going to say about Act 2 just now, as I don't want to spill all of my game's secrets before it's even released !!

Changes to UI as from Act II Release

** CHANGE TO DIALOGUE UI (SEE SCREENSHOT BELOW **







As you can see from the above screenshot, I have made a change to the main character dialogue UI. Instead of the small face graphics being used in the message boxes, I have changed this to show larger face graphics displayed above the message box.(If you've played any of Namco's TALES OF games, then you'll notice that these games use a similar style for dialogue between important characters.)

One thing you've probably noticed is that one of the portraits is in colour and one is in black and white. The one shown in colour will be the character which is currently speaking and the one not in colour is the character who isn't speaking.
Also, the name box will always be shown beneath the character portrait shown in colour.

I'm going to redo all of the dialogue in the Prologue section and Act I to this style, so that's going to take some time. This change will be implemented in the release of Act II (Which - to be honest - probably won't be out until September or October.)

Game Restructured

The trotal number of Acts in TALES OF ASTRENIA : FIRST CHAPTER has changed from 9 down to 6. This doesn't mean that I've shortened the story in any way - it simply means that the TALES OF ASTRENIA storyline will now be told across three games rather than two. The reason I decided to go for this change is basically so I could get the finished version of each game in the Triology out sooner.

Work on Act II of TALES OF ASTRENIA : FIRST CHAPTER will be starting next week, so I'll post more news on that when it's close to completion. (Due to there being a lot more content in Act II than in Act I, It won't be ready until September at the very least.)

Also, there will be an announcement sometime in August regarding the release a short game not part of the main triology (Which is set inbetween Act 1 & 2 of TALES OF ASTRENIA : FIRST CHAPTER) - the name of this will be LIARA'S JOURNEY.

Changes in Act 2

After doing another play through of the prologue section and Act 1 of TALES OF ASTRENIA : FIRST CHAPTER, there are a couple of issues that I'll be addressing for the release of Act 2.

THE FACESETS

The face graphics I've been using were ported over from the prototype version of the game which was eventually scrapped. Recently, I've started using a different facemaker program which means the faces will look different from the standard RPG Maker style I've been using thus far. So what I'm going to do is redo all of the faces from scratch - the new facesets will appear in Act 2.

THE COMBAT

I've decided that the encounter rate in Act 1 is far too high. Therefore, I've decided to scrap the random encounters and put on screen enemies in the game instead. (As seen in games from the TALES OF or ATELIER series).

However, although you will be able to choose how often you fight enemies, you'll still need to fight enough battles to level up enough to beat the bosses.

Tales Of Astrenia - Short Story Number 1

Hey there, everyone. I'd just like to say that I'm taking a little break from production of the main game of TALES OF ASTRENIA (FIRST CHAPTER) to make a short game which is based around one of the main characters which featured in the Prologue section of the main game but you only got to play as briefly. ** PLEASE NOTE - I recommend that you don't read the hidden paragraph unless you have completed up to the end of ACT 1 of TALES OF ASTRENIA.

The character I am talking about is none other than Liara Smith. (For those of you who have forgotten who she is, Liara is the younger sister of Maria Smith who asked Maria and Troy to get the herbs needed to cure their Mother.) The name of the game starring this character will be LIARA'S JOURNEY.


This character will be the main character of the this short game. It will be set inbetween Acts 1 & 2 of TALES OF ASTRENIA (FIRST CHAPTER) (Which will be the next Act to be released), so when this game is released, I'd recommend you, at the very least, play the prologue and Act 1 of the main game before you play this one.

I'm Back !!

My 8 year old laptop finally died on me last week, so I've been out of the loop as far as activity on this site goes. (Life just has a funny way of throwing the unexpected at you like that.) But I've got a brand new one now, so I'm good to go again !!

Also, because of this, the release of Chapter 1 of 'A Sword For Hire' has been put back to the 14th July.

Work on Act 2 for Tales Of Astrenia will begin within the next couple of weeks. This chapter will be MUCH bigger that the prologue and Act 1 so I don't expect it to be completed till - at the very least - sometime in August, if not September.

A llittle note about the 'grey text'

Some of you might have already figured this out, but I'd just like to let anyone who is playing this game know that any text that is in grey in a message box is the character's inner thoughts :)
