Right off the bat I know the biggest question about this project is going to be: Do I have to like Destructoid or know its community to like this?

The answer is: Absolutely not. You might miss out on an inside joke or two if you're weren't a member of the community a year or two ago, but on the whole, the only thing that Destructoid Story has to do with Destructoid is that many of the characters are derived from members of Destructoid's community. So don't worry about it. Destructoid Story is perfectly enjoyable with absolutely no knowledge of Destructoid and its community.

About Destructoid Story

How does one describe Destructoid Story?

Destructoid Story's origins date back to March (I believe) where I was watching Clannad, an anime series derived from a visual novel. I got this idea in my mind that it might be fun to make a visual novel. Then, as a member of Destructoid's community, I thought it would be funny to write a visual novel involving my two best friends from Destructoid (Firion and Brightside) and I. It'd be more of a joke than anything else. I'd make it in RPG Maker VX Ace, as I felt most comfortable using RPG Maker at the time (and still do).

But then the project grew. And grew. More characters were added. Various story paths were fleshed out. The project became bigger than I could have ever imagined. Long story short, I worked my butt off on it for a month straight and the result was the Destructoid Story that we have today. I still can't believe I actually finished a project (for once).

I hope you all enjoy it.

Story

It's difficult to describe Destructoid Story. How does one go about describing a visual novel that changes genres as many times as Destructoid Story does? Horror, romance, slice-of-life, action, adventure, mystery, etc. Destructoid Story has it all, depending on what path you choose to take. Seeing as the plot varies so drastically from path to path, it's difficult to give away many details without spoiling something or another.

But I suppose I'll try. Here goes...

A totally unimportant, not-at-all-special girl named Firion moves from the West Coast of the United States to the East Coast and begins attending Destructoid High. Little does she know, things are about to get very weird. Adventures of all kinds await in Destructoid High. Depending on who she chooses to befriend, she may travel through time and space, witness a basketball game to decide the fate of the human race, find herself at the center of a murder mystery, or even die.

Considering that last one...is it too late to transfer schools?

Well, I guess I'll just do the rest of this in a F.A.Q format.

F.A.Q's

Q: What's up with that name?

A: I just suck at naming games.

Q: What makes this "Remastered"?

A: Well, I originally released Destructoid Story back in April. But, I noticed after releasing it that even after proofreading it for the umpteenth time that it still had quite a few errors! I'm going back in there with a fine-toothed comb to iron out as much as I can catch. So, the remastered version is basically a version of Destructoid Story that's (hopefully) error-free.

Q: You claim Destructoid Story is a mishmash of genres, but if you had to boil it down to one genre, what would it be?

A: I guess...comedy. There are plenty of jokes in Destructoid Story. In every path. Some paths are more joke-heavy than others, but there are always laughs to be had at one point or another. Hopefully. I sure hope my sense of humor is decent.

Q: How much interactivity is in Destructoid Story?

A: That depends on what path you choose to take. Some are more interactive than others. Oftentimes interactivity boils down to simply choosing an option from a list of options, but there's one path in particular that is more interactive than the rest. I won't say how, though.

Q: How is Destructoid Story structured?

A: You go through Act I first. Depending on your actions in Act I you can be en route to one of three main paths or you could be well on your way to a bad ending. (There are three unique bad endings in Act I, all worth getting.) Each of the three main paths have two acts apiece. Once you're on a main path you're stuck there, so be mindful of your choices.

Although to help you out, I have flowcharts drawn up for every path/act in the game that I'll include with the download. Those should make it easier to visualize how Destructoid Story works and plan your saves accordingly.

Q: How long is Destructoid Story?

A: If you go for every bad ending in Act I (which you'll probably want to do, as each is unique) and go through every path, Destructoid Story should take you roughly eight hours to go through.

Don't have much else to say that I can think of at the moment. At least, not without spoiling anything further. Be sure to check out the rest of the screenshots and the teaser trailer for Destructoid Story. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll add it to the F.A.Q.

Considering that the game is basically already done and I just have to proofread it (better than I did before), it shouldn't be long before this is released, so hang tight for a few days and I hope you enjoy Destructoid Story Remastered when it's released.

Destructoid Story Remastered is Now Fixed

Hey, everyone. This isn't the kind of announcement that I like to make, because it's as much a pain in my butt as I'm sure it is a pain in the butt for players, but I screwed up.

I was watching a friend stream Destructoid Story Remastered yesterday night. He tried to get onto Marche's (or my own) route, fulfilling the correct conditions to do so, and the game acted like he fulfilled the requirements at all, moving right along into a bad ending. So as it turns out, I screwed up the variables. There are two flags you have to trigger to get onto my route, and I suppose for the purposes of testing I had put an extra one in and forgot to remove it.

So what I've done is I've of course fixed the game and re-uploaded it. Now if you download it you should be able to play through all of the routes just fine and everything should be peaches and gravy. But if there's anyone out there who has downloaded it previously, has played through it as much as they could and still wants to play through my route without going all the way back through the first act again, shoot me a message. I made a version of the game that plops you right at the beginning of my route, which would be a little less painless than going through the whole thing again. I'll give it out to anyone who wants it.

I guess the moral of the story here is: don't just double or triple check your variables. Quadruple check...quintuple check...do whatever you need to do to make absolutely certain that your variables work properly. All the more so if those variables are use to continue the main story or if you're playing around with them for testing purposes. Because when you screw up and you've already uploaded your game, man that is one of the worst feelings there is as a game creator.

It kind of sucked all the more-so in this case, because I honestly think that my route is the route that people have the most fun with. At least, that's what I've been told by other people who have seen the game in its entirety. So I apologize to anyone out there who has played this, saw that you couldn't get onto my route, and went "hey, what's the big deal here?"

So hopefully this is the last announcement like this that I'll have to make in regards to Destructoid Story Remastered. Sorry again for the trouble, and hopefully everything should be working perfectly now, from beginning to end.
