Created in 4 days for the Golden Age of Game Mak event.

Is the game too hard? Unlock easy mode here: http://rpgmaker.net/games/7973/walkthrough/

Features:
- a Frog (custom drawn!) with awkward animations
- a Fish (presumably dead at this point)
- a sheep
- Multiple skeletons
- a (probably) helpful slime
- Ribbits, baas, *flop*s, *rattle*s, and *schloop*s
and

- a post-apocolyptic setting (though this is already spoiled in the Flavor tag)

... with some more surprises along the way.

Characters:

the Plot (maybe):
I would tell you more, but I don't want to spoil you.
This is approximately what the initial impression of the plot will be for the average player.

Five years ago, the world was destroyed.
Oh, but! On a more positive note--
Frog is chilling at his lily pad, when all of a sudden a chicken flies in and steals a crystal. Who knew chickens could fly that far?
Being pretty nonplussed that something was taken right out from under his slimy nose, Frog realizes that he should probably go get it back. He teams up with Fish (who just so happened to be there at the time, what a coincidence!) and they set off for wherever the game map takes them.

You can achieve either of the endings by
defeating or being defeated by the final boss.

There are two possible endings. Both are equally true.

... And Version 2.0 is released!

Referencing the RPG Cliche list, this game has:
70 Aversions, 6 of which are maybe aversions
24 Subversions, 10 of which are maybe subverted
7 played straight, 2 of which are doubtful, but put as "played straight" just in case

Changelog/Bugfixes:
- Facesets added for everything! If there's a faceset I missed, please tell me xD
- Added an extra intro scene that makes the story more coherent (I hope)
- Sprinkled hints around that alluded to the overarching story in monster encounters, the final battle, as well as skills
- Skills are now much more relevant to each character.
(At levels 8-10, bits of backstory will be revealed through the skill names)

@shayoko:
Long reply is long.

originally a Japanese game?
Wait what xD No, I don't think so...?

don't know if its just me but this is a bit laggy
I haven't done anything in particular to it that would make it lag (though others have reported lags in fullscreen mode), so, sorry I can't do anything about that :(

when you learn a new skill you need to seprate the skill name from was like
Waterwas Icewas Healwas is wrong
Edit: Nevermind, I think I can fix that.
There's nothing I can do about that, that terms thing is a result of the engine being translated (I'm using the Steam version, apparently there were translation issues that are reported in the Known Bugs section. In fact, the steam version can't even build an installer -.- The event, however, required using the 2k editor, so I had to make do.)

why is there gear in the store.it does not flow with whats going on
Grand list of RPG Cliches: Cliche #184
"Adam Smith's Corollary
No matter how thoroughly devastated the continent/planet/universe is, there's always some shopkeeper who survived the end of the world and sits outside the gates of the villain's castle, selling the most powerful equipment in the game, like nothing ever happened."

why is dispel herb not with the other usable items?
I should probably reorder that list xD Thanks for pointing that out!

after the last battle "where" is cut off
Fixing~

Not much to say about this didn't enjoy it at all.
Aw, I'm sorry that you didn't like it. Thank you for playing though!

Woah, it's a retro frog game!

... But nah, it's not me, I think Crossy Road is the one you should sue for that xD Pretty sure they stole your idea...

Well, I meant the point of no return after leaving the housing maps.
Not before the boss fight.

Ah. That was just a bug that I squashed about five minutes ago xD There was no time for extensive testing, but that doesn't excuse me for not extensively testing it.

We're not talking about the final encounter room where the boss battle takes place, but the map you enter just after the houses where you can pick up the fire breath skill. Or at least that is what I'm talking about.

Ah shoot. Did another thing slip past me? Sorry! I thought I had the transfers rigged correctly... Nobody has said anything about it until now, so I had believed that everything was fine xD Thank you for the clarification. I'm updating a fix now, which includes a shop that lets you sell to it, and a bed that recovers 20 MP. The contest version will be kept for legacy reasons in the downloads section.

What was the thought behind it when you included it?

I included it because it shouldn't matter if you were prepared or not for the boss fight, because you didn't have to win, and you had plenty of warning about Falcon/Chicken being there beforehand. (the map where you can see the tower, Chicken is pacing around it) I have said that "There are two possible endings. Both are equally true.". So, partly out of obligation to not favor one ending over another, and partly because I thought the player, up until this point, has had a bunch of opportunities to improve themselves/Frog. They will have his/her mettle tested in the final chamber. No backing out. No regrets. Something like that, haha.

In fact, SacredLobo, you went much further in regards to random battles than the average (or at least, my impression of the average) player would've, or would've needed to. It's possible to beat the game with Frog and Fish on level 5. You were level 11! You completely steamrolled Falcon xD I feel sorry for him... and my condolences if this game depressed you.
Oh.

.. I missed that line.

Yes, I meant beforehand as well. After the housing are. The last room is pretty obvious.

I noticed a slight issue. On you've entered the 4th map it's impossible to go back to the earlier maps.
That was intentional, though I'm not sure if it was a good intentional choice. What do you think? Should there be a way out of the final encounter room for supply-stocking, or a warning beforehand?

@Kylaila: Thank you for taking the time to write a review!

You're welcome!

It can render an early game over, especially if you like to save often (like me).
You can regain it easily, but I see no benefit from the decision, so just curious.

Wrote a review.
I also noticed that being an issue. Good thing I had enough supplies! Barely.

It is the best opening ever seen, indeed.

Mjshi, did you update the game already or may I wait for an update/notification?

Ah, I have fixed the tileset issue. I can't do anything about the fullscreen, though. Sorry!

Ribbit, ribbit?

*Sploosh, splash*

I died.

Oh and it plays fine in full screen for me.

I've played many other 2k games .. including contest games, so .. it is possible.
Oh well. I will still play fullscreen whenever possible.

The first chest (where the sheep and the slime are) respawns every time you revisit.
Sleeping in bed will not recovery either mp or hp (not sure if intentional or not)
Both intentional, in order to subvert two cliches (one of them was that sleeping would fix/cure death, decapitation, and/or vaporization, the other was something about chests.)

.. I can't progress further. Near the skeletons. The second house is blocked off, and you cannot use the limited waterwalk on the map, thus cutting you off from the way you are supposd to take.
I apparently forgot to allow passability on the Exterior tileset for shallow water, but didn't forget to do it on the Basic tileset... ugh. Uploading fix now.

Also, using full screen will turn battles into an eyehurting lagging mess with a flickering screen. Play in window mode (until a fix .. maybe?)
I recommend playing in window mode... RPGmaker2k stuff just doesn't seem to work in fullscreen very well on screens (stretched graphics, laggy, programs force-quitting) At least for my computer, this happens with all the 2k games that I play. Honestly, I'd like to force players to always be in windowed mode, but I have no idea how to force that setting.

Sorry and thank you for bringing the tileset issue to my attention, as well as bearing with me xD
