Monster Island has been at peace since the death of the last Orc Warmongerer 2 centuries ago. But now, when war is all but forgotten, a new threat has presented itself. Humans have set foot ashore, with colonization on their mind. The South of the island has already fallen, and the monsters are barely surviving in the only town that is not yet burned to the ground.

When all hope seems lost, a skeleton awakens. He does not know who he is, but his anger towards the humans is great, and he remembers what the humans did to her. He exists for one sole reason. To kill all humans he comes across, and stop the invasion. Can the amnesiac skeleton fulfill his purpose?

This game was created for the two-week swapsies event, where each developer worked on the game for one week. Development was started by sjmorgan, and finished by Jeroen_Sol.

Update planned.

Going to do bug fixes and an alternate best ending. Original contest version will stay up for download as well.

Contacted Jeroen_Sol a few days ago for the open source file to update, and he said sure, he'll see if he can find it.

The responses to this game were mostly positive save for the best ending. Hoping the players and Jack can have something that'll be appreciated.

This game is pretty well-made, and I especially like the puzzle elements that came with it. The boss fights are kind of brutal, though, since recovery options are very limited. I kind of stopped at the necromancer boss.

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

Yeah, I did make those bosses difficult. Maybe a little too much so. Blame that on me playing Final Fantasy Record Keeper a lot, where the bosses are the only interesting part of the gameplay, I suppose. I assume you have the best equipment you can find up to that point? If you're not at level 6 yet, or if you don't start the battle with full TP on Porkund, I suggest grinding a bit for both of those things. If you have less than 7 salves left, I'd also suggest going back to town to buy some more. There's a shortcut down halfway up the mountain, but walking all that distance back up may be a bit of a drag, though.

Yeah, I could probably try that. Thanks!

Whew. I actually beat it, and got a (sorta) good ending. That was rough. And I had to grind out money for healing salves a lot.

Pretty much, this is "Do you have enough healing items to win?", the game. So much of it relies on being well-stocked on Salves since they're the only way to heal. In rough boss battles, this makes you ask things like "I have seven salves left. Can I avoid death and kill this guy with only healing that many times?"

It's a tried and true RPG staple, but without anything else, it's not super thrilling or anything. Characters mostly had a decent pool of skills, but some were way more useful than others. Enemy encounters were very blah though. The bosses were the meat of the game, and while several had some neat mechanics, like I said it came down to mostly a battle of attrition to see if your healing salve stock would last.

All in all, I enjoyed this. And I'm very thankful for the several points where you could quickly exit Death Mountain to restock on supplies. However, having to trek back through the same caves over and over again was a bit tedious ^^;

Story was pretty interesting, but... (hidden for spoilers, obviously)

A bit of a downer. Goal: Get Death's power at the top of the summit of Death Mountain. End Result: Failure. If you report back to the town elder, you can get a Bad End where you fight the humans to the death.

But in a chest at the top of the mountain, you got a key that opens a door at the base of the mountain where Death's power REALLY is held! But then Death doesn't want you to have it. So you fight him. But even after beating him, he still doesn't want you to have the power and says it'll destroy all humans AND monsters. Then there is an earthquake and you must escape. Turns out, in the 'quake the human leader died and the humans retreated? So, mission accomplished? And, oh yeah, we have to kill the player character because he's a revenant.

So it's a string of failures that just happened to result in a good outcome. And then you die. And the whole succubus who is the "she" that Jack kept going on about in the beginning just kinda leaves and is never seen again. ^^;;

Not a bad story for a contest game, but left me feeling a bit unfulfilled at the end.

Yeah, after the event, I might rewrite that ending a little bit to make it less of a downer. I wasn't quite sure how to make it feel more fulfilling, and I just wanted to get it uploaded at the time.

Still, like I said, not bad for a contest game! ^_^

Unity, you should have posted that as a review and earned the score for writing it up! It's not too late for some copy paste.

I'm playing through it right now Sol. I'm wondering if Jack kept his form mechanics and attacks that depend on states inflicted.

Haha, I may just do that. :D

EDIT: Forgot to mention, but the puzzle stuff like the bone tossing and spikes were cool! ^_^b

Also I liked when you got a certain party member that you could go back and talk to their family for new interactions. Also that is a super awesome character idea! ^_^

When I saw the script to use Lufia style tools, I just knew I had to change the arrow to a bone. :)

I just kicked some human ass on level 5, only needed one salve. I'm guessing the hard stuff comes next. It's really interesting playing something you started and someone else finished. I was glad Pestilence Breath made the final cut. I really like the idea of buff/debuff states with dependent skills.

Edit: So happy and so sad to get the Battleax. Happy cause it rocks, sad that I didn't grab it before kicking the human ass. At least I know the fight was possible without it's awesome boost.

I didn't remove those skills as I didn't want to mess with the first half too much and I thought the concept was cool. I don't think they're the most useful of his skills, though.

Fair enough. Having given him boost, I can't imagine Famines trade off for 50% attack power and boosted ability being very worth since it grants it without the risk.

Just slayed the Necromancer without leaving the mountain. That black staff attack is nasty. He managed to drop Porkund once and made me use a refresh juice. Level 6, 6, 5 pre fight.

Well, boost does cost 50TP, so at least there's that.

There's plenty more where that came from in the game Someoneman hasn't uploaded. I thought it'd be cool to reuse them here. I guess it's similar to your shop chests. When I saw those in both of your games I couldn't help but start laughing. ^^

That second wave of minions LoD summoned was an unpleasant surprise. They gang smashed Andite from full HP. Still won, the battle and the war. Poor Jack.

Hahaha, thanks! Yeah, I loved the idea of a mimic merchant so much that I used it in both games XD

Looking forward to playing the game you started as well ^_^

I almost came back here to tell you I found a game breaking bug when I went up the ladder on Mrs. Cows house and could not get back to the ground....
That should tell how could I am at puzzles even though that was not a puzzle :)

Would be nice if the store keeper changed his mind about the 5 per cent increase because of the broken bottle....I'm a cheap warrior skeleton :)

OK, back to mountain climbing...

Almost! I see what happened there. For anyone else that encounters trouble on the ladder hanging off the house in town, hold down while hitting the action button to tripper a smooth leap off.

WHAT!!!, why did you do that ?? Ya shoulda not told no one...let them hang
on the rope ladder till her husband comes home. He would have helped them down :)

Very much enjoyed the game you guys made for the contest.
Nice to see a monster or monsters as the heros :)
Not to hard and the puzzles did not keep me from completing the game :)
Although, the end........

Yeah, the ending is getting the same response from everyone. I'm pretty sure there will be a post contest ending. Considering she is out there and Jack is charmed... and humans still exist beyond the island, he may have reasons to live after all? We'll see. I really like the bad ending TBH. By that I mean the actual bad ending, not the games best ending.
