If this is an either/or thing then outline is 100% the way to go. Maybe make it a strong, saturated light blue/purple or a hard white though, so it doesn't end up blending with any blue monsters?
Seconded. With the outlines, you can see that the cuts are opening another dimension or something. Without, it's too hard to tell.
I worry that they dominate the animation. Maybe a dark purple outline instead?
or light violet (purple...i hate that word with a passion.) white could work too maybe a dimmed down white so it's not like white electric :O oh computers!
Use both for different purposes. Also, don't be afraid to palette swap and/or reverse the graphic around. Think Fire1 and Blaze from FF6.
what if black? if you're tearing through time and space, doubling down is the best way to go XDDD

Edit: Was messing with colours and idk,

I kinda like this

but white is good too

black version (really a very dark purple)

tried a bright blue too, just for funsies

I think the white reads best from a distance, but I really like the bright versions just cos. The darker purple does blend better though. idk, just messing around XD
dont let libs start messing with your colors she CHANGED an area in cope island by doing this

rip yellow bath water

(the light blue she suggested was way better)
I suck SO BAD at colour composition tho
A contrasting color gives the best result here, in my opinion. I think the desaturated light blue in the GIF is perfect. Making it a tad paler would be alright too.
A dark outline isn't good since most of the purples inside the cuts are already dark.
