Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

Thanks for the clarification, and yeah I'm pretty much set on killing the Behemoth at full power, since I did ask about it, collected some data data on it, and am already preparing, might as well. Not sure if I will be able to record it though, since it may be kind of long due to how much HP the thing has.

Original reason of why I was curious was because the game didn't give me an instant Game Over when I was discovered and it went into a battle where I wasn't hit for maximum damage at the very start as well, so I thought that killing it then and there would've given something extra.

But, I have ran into a problem, having trouble finding the Tinderbot MKIII the third time. Tried both the Dam Facility and the Jackal labs, but so far I can't find it. Do I have to search harder in those areas or go deeper?
I had a total facepalm moment on that one as well...

Check the Rebel Base Harbor, where you snagged the boats earlier in the game.

...

Never would've figured that out on myself, on the map it doesn't even seem to be as near to the shore as some of the others, thanks.

Also, does anyone remember how to get to the Shadow fight in the Dam Facility? This area and the other maze-like areas are starting to make me regret resetting optional areas.

Also, I've finally made it into the core, Neok. This place is total win so far.

If anyone else wants a clue as to what it's like...

I have two storyline questions... (spoilers for the end of the game)

First of all, what exactly is up with Dread during phase 5 and 7? In 5 he appears to be drugged (eyes closed, doesn't talk or respond at all), and in phase 7, Jake, when questioned on why Dread is nicer now, says that "A lot happened behind the scenes, let's just leave it at that." I expected him to explain what he did to make Dread perform a Heel Face Turn later on, but no such luck. Are you planning to explain this at all, ever? Because leaving sideplots unexplained like that annoys me. :(

On a related note, you don't tell us what's the deal with Kugar either. You can't just throw the "ZOMG he's an angel/ghost!" thing out of nowhere. You explained this well in the original, but the most we get is that Tinder apparently lied about the fact that Kugar's just crazy and faking it. One place where you falter here but did better in the original seems to be exposition. Too much exposition is dull, yes, but leaving things completely unexplained is worse. How did he become an angel? How is he aware of Aila while still being mindcontrolled by her? What exactly happened during his fight with Tinder (who apparently won, somehow). Unlike Aila's backstory, which you said would be explained in Variant, I doubt this is going to be explained, ever. And that leaves me with permanently unanswered questions, which makes me sad. :(

I suppose we might simply have different preferences in our storytelling methods, though. I do know that some people don't like everything to be clearly explained to them.

Really...
There should be a law against teleporter mazes in video games. At least it's not as bad as Strange Journey's teleporter maze - invisible pits combo from hell.

Sorry, dick move. I know.

Thought I heard that there was a shard that we can only get if we beat the full-powered version.

To get all the shards, you must kill the Behemoth, period. It doesn't matter how you do it as long as you do it.

Basically this.

(Is there any reward for beating the Behemoth at full power in the first place, anyway? o_O)

Bragging rights :P. I never really intended for Behemoth to be fought that way, so I was really surprised when someone actually wanted to take him on. So if Missileboater actually pulls this off, I'll let him in on something nice :P.

Thanks, only 24 more levels to go, guess I better get started on it again.
Wow, I hope you have a savegame before all of this, b/c at this rate, the last couple of postgame bosses will be a cakewalk.

Hmm, okay. If you actually pull this off, let me know, and I'll tell you something interesting :).

...
Wait, are you saying that we don't have to beat the full-powered Behemoth to get to the final boss? Thought I heard that there was a shard that we can only get if we beat the full-powered version. It's basically the only reason I'm doing this.

In my first endgame save, my main party's average level is about 54-55, not sure if that's still too high.

post=210796
Actually, I've heard that you can only get a certain shard if you DON'T fight the fully -powered Behemoth, since you need to weaken it to get to where the shard is. I haven't actually gotten to that point yet, though, so I don't know for certain.

(Is there any reward for beating the Behemoth at full power in the first place, anyway? o_O)

I think my previous post might have been misunderstood...

I stated that if you want to collect all the shards, you're forced to trigger the battle with the weakened behemoth to get one of them. That means that you're forced to walk over a tile that triggers the battle. There SHOULD be nothing stopping you from getting the shard no matter how you go about killing the behemoth. It's just, if you want to kill him at full strength, you'll be forced to wait until you kill him at full strength to get that last shard. Neok mentioned that it's possible to reset optional content by beating the final boss as well, so in theory even if you DO get the shard by killing the weakened behemoth you can just reset everything and take your party to fight the full strength behemoth again.

Basically, just think of things this way: To get all the shards, you must kill the Behemoth, period. It doesn't matter how you do it as long as you do it. Sorry if I ended up causing any confusion...

Also, just made it to the core and tried my hand at the boss there. I don't know what I did to make him hate me so much, but I'm pretty sure he pulled every single possible dick move in the book on me before I eventually lost. It's been awhile since I've run into a boss that's beatable, but just plain rude like that. I approve. :D

I'll say this: My design policy is that when a switch or lever stops being used for anything, I remove the ability to access it.

And as an aside, can you send me your save file? I want to check to make sure there's enough shards to get all abilities. I already did this check once with tester's, but just in case, let's do it again.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I had assumed that the switches were reset just like the ones in the sewer were when I switched phases. Of course, I was wondering why the elevator still worked, but I figured it was a minor bug or something.

I pm'd you a link to my save file.
Thanks, only 24 more levels to go, guess I better get started on it again.

You actually made a game that people on this site are playing. They are discussing it. They care about its mechanics and secrets. This is an amazing thing to pull off.

Thanks man. I do what I can :).

I wouldn't be that surprised if that's the case with the G.P.S., since we know it doesn't work in some places ( most notably, Orbital Prison 3 )

That's the only place it doesn't work (since that renders the whole area pretty moot).

Also, it's official now. This shard is now the last one, I went to the other two areas and got those. This is it. And I have no idea where it might be that I haven't looked in the Ground Floors of Oberon Tower.

A Signal Ring? That's news to me... Where can you find Tinderbot 3?
For Tinderbot 3, that sidequest unlocks by visiting Tinder's Hideout in Phase 2 after you've beaten the game, then going back to "Phase 9" and visiting Tinder's Hideout, which should now be visible on the map, again. He'll tell you to track down Tinderbot 3 in the Factory. You'll have to chase it all over the place in the end, though.

Edit: Crud. Even with the shard in this tower, it STILL seems I'll be short one shard to buy the ability I messed up with earlier. So anyone know any ways to get shards that don't involve finding them or getting them from GQuiz?

Edit2: Oh... *phew* looks like I overlooked one in O.P. 3. Hopefully that one and the Tower shard is all I'll need...

Edit3: Crud. It wasn't the one I needed. I'm now back to the situation I was in before. I need to find the shard in Oberon Tower and at least one more shard after that one. Hopefully no more than that...

Well Neok, I have to hand it to you.

You actually made a game that people on this site are playing. They are discussing it. They care about its mechanics and secrets. This is an amazing thing to pull off.

Well done.

This is a game that goes beyond the "This is a new/cool RM game, let's discuss it as an RM game" notion and enters the realm of "This is a new/cool GAME, let's discuss IT".

I also commend Neok for his work.

Well, that's interesting to know about the Behemoth. I might have an equipment setup that let's me survive him now, I just need a ton of Stimulant C's, Speed Boosters, and Toxication Fields along with the correct Reinforce for Erin. I've gotten her speed up to 32 with the help of the Al Di La, which seems to really help out. I couldn't see the speed crush effect for the ex boost from the gear I was wearing. That definitely explains a lot.

As for the Shard Finder, it seems to be called the Signal Ring. I believe that the reward for tracking the Tinderbot Mk3, but don't remember for certain. After doing a search, it does seem that I'm missing shards from at least three areas still. Oh well...

I figured out why I don't have the last character. Apparently I DID miss one Joker by virtue of having bought the ability, and not saved somehow. Funny thing is I can't afford it now. So once I get it, that SHOULD be it. Thanks for that tip Neok, I'd have not double checked if you hadn't said that.

Well, all the items that can be bought shouldn't take too long to collect, a small amount of credit farming should be able to get all the items you've listed. The problem is finding some of the more rare stuff ( Stimulant C fields and Stimulant D fields ) quickly and in large quantities, which would make the fight a lot easier.

Still kind of stuck on the Jokers, just can't find the 1-3 Aurora shards needed, and I've pretty much searched high and low for them.

post=210770
Ok, I've been searching for a shard that the Signal Ring says exists on the Ground Floors of Oberon Tower. But I can't find it at all. I've been in every room I can find, but it's not in any of them. I mean, this place isn't exactly a maze or anything, so I'm 99% sure I've combed the area adequately. Is it possible for the GPS to not be indicating an exit inside the area to me? Or perhaps the Signal Ring is just broken as far as the tower is concerned?

The only thing left here is the SNEWS article.
