[Poll] Western RPGs VS Japanese RPGs

author=Nightowl
Irony, because I thought JRPGs were like that. Agree with the gameplay part though.

I probably worded myself wrong there. In terms of linearity, jRPGs are obviously more linear. I guess the best way to explain myself is that almost every plot device used in the Fallout games, I was already expecting... with the exception of the Old World Blues DLC. Most of the stuff in that was fairly unpredictable and more enjoyable than 3 and New Vegas' main stories combined IMO.

Take for example... Far Cry 3. Similar gameplay to Fallout 3/NV. Difference is way better plot (again, just my opinion). REALLY enjoyed that game. In a different style, the Mass Effect series. Amazing wRPGs with one of the best plots out there.

I just like to be left with an impression from a game, regarding it's plot. I'm the same way with most forms of media. The way things are currently going though, eventually I think I'll start to prefer wRPGs over jRPGs as the amount of modern jRPGs with amazing plots are dwindling and wRPGs with great plots are starting to pop up more and more.

[Poll] Western RPGs VS Japanese RPGs

I tend to prefer jRPGs for a few different reasons. For the most part (there are a FEW exceptions)... jRPGs are more difficult, I enjoy the gameplay mechanics more, and the storylines are better IMO. Not to say that I don't like wRPGs - I do. But games like Fallout, which I'm only mentioning since it's been mentioned so much already... to me, feels like there's barely any plot. It's dull, drab. No real twists and turns. Point A to Point B. That's just how I feel. Gameplay is fun though.

But in the end, I play RPGs for the story. So jRPGs > wRPGs for me.

Stuff going on? - A Short Story Appears!

I loved it. Wouldn't mind reading more of these short stories. =P <3 Hiante.

I finished Radiant Historia by check anything suspicious nook & cranny. (started again and finished it because someone erased my file)
Can't beat the optimal boss, Master Vainqueur(It's like obtaining the Sword of Kings for Poo, execpt much harder and you DIE!) But, I'm not giving up!

I ended up beating the game at full completion as well as Vainqueur. Loved the True Ending, as well as the game itself. As far as Vainqueur is concerned, yeah he's tough. After the warmup battle with his spider home, I found that using Aht's traps and Marco's Guard Rise skill helped a lot compared to some of the other strategies I tried at first. Also helps if you're higher level. I did it at the character range of 60-65.

Just started on Tales of Innocence. It's a Tales game, of course I'm gonna like it. lol

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

I started playing Radiant Historia for the DS thanks to Craze's post in this thread:

So far... it's amazing. I'd definitely put it up there with best RPG storylines now. Just started on Standard History - Chapter 6.

Anyone played Final Fantasy VI as a PS1 Classic?

You might as well just stick with the SNES and GBA versions. The only real difference between the SNES version and the PS1 version is a few FMVs, beastiary, art gallery, and a status thingy. And load times. The load times aren't really that bad, if you compare them to some of the other RPGs on the PS1 though (Chrono Trigger is unplayable due to the load times IMO).

The GBA version you already own has all of this stuff in it, aside from the videos, with even more added on stuff (the extra areas, espers, etc.) so I'd just stick with that personally.

Star Stealing Prince

I can't wait for the sequel :) I've nominated this for a few different categories for the Misaos. It's just too good.

Favorite RPG story and why?

My personal favorite RPG storylines are...

Xenogears - Absolutely loved the story. The psychological, philosophical, and theological themes in the game blew me away. Still sticks to me as one of the best games as far as the plot goes.

Xenosaga series - While not as good as Xenogears, by a long shot, still one of the better ones IMO. Preferred 3 the most out of the Xenosaga series though.

Suikoden II - Luca Blight, Jowy, war. Amazing story.

Persona II Innocent Sin - The japanese counterpart/parallel world retelling of the events of "Persona II Eternal Punishment". Still my favorite Persona game, due to the storyline. Nazis, Hitler, Joker, serial killers, demons.

Final Fantasy VI - Don't care what anyone else says. Loved it. Sure it could've had more character development for a good number of the characters, but you have to remember that for it's time, it had more than the usual.

Star Ocean I & II - No real comment here. Just really liked the space/time travel themes and a lot of the plot progression. Better than III and The Last Hope plot-wise IMO.

Most of the "Tales Of" series, particularly "Tales of Phantasia" - Another set I loved the plot of. Dunno why really. Just did. A few of the games had horrible plots though.

Star-Stealing Prince - Loveeeeeed it. One of my two favorite RPG Maker games, as far as plot is concerned.

Zephyrus and the Kingdom of Heaven - The other RPG Maker that hits my favorite plots list. Reminded me a lot of Xenogears.

Shadow Hearts I & II - Darker storylines of an alternate reality mixed with murder and the occult. Made me fall in love with the series, although "From the New World" disappointed me.

Mass Effect series - No comment.

All I can think of at this very moment. I'm sure there's more though.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Tales of Vesperia
Infinite Undiscovery
Resonance of Fate

Mostly those 3, with the majority of my time being taken by Vesperia. That is, until Star Ocean: The Last Hope comes in the mail. Also waiting on Lost Odyssey so I'll check that out and see if it's decent enough. Been playing Halo 3 and WWE 12 on Xbox Live too.

Really digging Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery. Haven't played too much of Resonance of Fate yet, but I think the grid map stuff may take a while to get used to.
