Gammak Protip: Don't force players to follow some slow-butt NPCs with a broken leg through a long windy cave with nothing in it to trigger a plot flag you didn't need to have.

Dragon Quest 6.
There was a really neat game last year in the IGMC that had a really cool follow character. It was called Veek and was really interesting.

I really think "partner" quests or segments where you follow NPCs are one of the most mishandled aspects of games. Either the AI is so dumb and uncooperative or the NPC moves at a turtle's pace compared to your character.

There is one more fun as hell aspect of follow NPCs segments, I remember from Mafia. You can't be too close to them and you can't be too far, otherwise...
I was gonna say, is this a modern game?

The Witcher 3 does this. Worse still, it's a stealth segment and if you get too close, you fail the quest, but your walk speed is 2-3x faster than the person you're following and there's no way to go slower. You just have to keep walking, then stop to let him get a lead on you again, rinse and repeat.

To be fair, in a game like Witcher 3, where they're trying to make the world seem very realistic, it's not that bad to have characters that can't keep up with your speed. The fact that there's so much going on around you makes it easier to find them if you lose them, and they at least jog if you get close to them. Also, it's realistic that a Witcher, with their enhanced stamina and skills, would be faster than the average whore, dwarf or drug-addled lordling, so it makes sense in that aspect at least.

Yes, but what's not realistic is that Geralt doesn't know how to tiptoe or sneak or anything, given that he's a hunter. It's extremely annoying that they designed a mandatory quest that clashes with the game's mechanics.

messing with tropes is fun, what can I say
If you're stuck following someone the default movement shouldn't be enough to whiz right by him. It's one of the few situations where a button to run is the right solution because if you fall behind you can catch up with it. Otherwise tapping forward intermittently is the wrong way to do it.

The best choice is to not even have it as gameplay because every segment like that sucks (unless its one of the core gameplay minigames like Sid Meier's Covert Action, and even then fuck the tailing minigame on the harder difficulties)
Usually in Witcher 3 they're escort missions, though a few are 'follow me home because how else will you know which house is mine in this huge city, brah?' And there's talking on the way in quite a few of them - interaction with each other.
