Description

Welcome to the Game Name Game event! The goal of the event is to take a game name from below, create a synopsis, mockups and concept art, and pitch it to RMN!

#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-

GO AND VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE!

Voting ends Friday.
#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-#-

The genesis for this idea came from this game name ideas thread, and that is from where the list of available game names for this event have been compiled.

This is a short event.

You are not going to be making a game. You will be making a pitch and mockup and description of a game. The challenge will be to come up with a good idea for a game based on the name alone! Also, the game submission doesn't have to be funny or a joke - serious game idea entries are welcome.

First, pick a game name from the list below! And then provide the following:

Mockup the Game!
Type of game
The coolest unique thing about it
Give context
Describe an example of play
Create 3 mockup images (minimum)
What question is your game trying to answer?

Pitch the Game!
Short pitch - in 15 words or less pitch your game.
Long pitch - write the content that would show up on the back of the game box
Description on RMN - write the description as you would present it on RMN

An explanation of the above submission requirements...

The type of game would be akin to its genre (or blend of genres), try to use a word that reflects what you actually do in the game. ie- "Platformer", "2D exploration", "top-down hack-n-slash".

For the coolest unique thing, you can summarize drastically. We don't need to know how it works, but we want to know why it's cool. ie- "you can manage four parties of heroes at once!"

Next give us some context: who am I, where am I, what am I trying to do? The plot will never sound good in ten words, but the fantasy might. You're a ninja? You're a knight? You're a ninja-knight saving kittens? You're a kitten-knight saving ninjas? Give us the setting or framework of where the game takes place, and the story behind it. You can go into greater detail here, if required. Also spoilers are allowed.

Now describe a moment the player can experience that's typical of the game, and illustrates the best of what you've just told us. Explain the gameplay.

The mockups can be concept art, rips from other games amalgamated into a new frame of reference (this is pretty common in the industry (most movie industry but hey)), game titlescreen, storyboards or wireframes. Try to explain the aesthetic.

Lastly, what question is your game trying to answer? You might not realize it, but your game is answering a question. Games are a form of self-expression (like any other artform), and as such give a venue for us to answer questions we might have. Seeing as how games are primarily about gameplay, it follows that your question will be about gameplay mechanics. Like, "What if you had a platformer, but played as an enemy?", "What if you extended the concept of the multiparty dungeons in Final Fantasy VI to the entire game?", "What if a traditional RPG had non-traditional classes?". Figure this out for your own game.

For the Short pitch, you have to get to the point, incredibly quickly, in plain and simple language. This is critical to pitching your game. GET. OUR. ATTENTION. 15 words might be too much! Shoot for 10 or less. Imagine you are in an elevator with a game publisher and you had 30 seconds to make your case. Go!

For the long pitch write the content that would show up on the back of the game box. A player is attracted to your cover art and short pitch, and grabs the game for further inspection. You have about three sentences to hook him and about three more to sell it. Go!

This time, the game is on RMN, and your potential player saw your main image, title and short description and clicks on your gameprofile. Write the description as you would present it on RMN, so that he PLAYS your game. Go!

  • Compile your mockup and pitch into a zip file and submit it to the event.
  • Post your mockup and pitch as a post to the event page for others to view in full BBC glory!
  • Make as many submissions as you like.
  • Multiple people can use the same game name if they want!
  • DON'T MAKE A GAME (at least not for this event - it's not required)
  • Have fun!

Hmm. I'm thinking of pitching The Retelling of a Teenage Swordsman's Exploits as a game demonstration of predestination and free will.

Would you like fries with that?
...sometimes, it's possible to love something a little too much..

Type of game
2D Top-Down Puzzle/Horror RPG

The coolest unique thing about it
Obviously, it's the clown.

Give context
John Smith has had an irrational fear of clowns for as long as he can remember, and has thought of many creative ways to avoid meeting them... until now.

Describe an example of play
(below)Prevent the clown from entering your house, stealthily retrieve french fries from the front door, diplomatic negotiation with a dreaded foe, sneak into a highly-guarded-and-equipped-with-cutting-edge-security-systems restaurant, and 28 more puzzle-RPG stages.

Mockups

After being forced to enter restaurant

What question is your game trying to answer?
How could someone with a profound love of McD's french fries obtain them without facing their worst nightmare?

Pitch the Game!

Short pitch - in 15 words or less pitch your game.
White powdered face? Bulbous red nose? It's the Devil incarnate... but those fries are to die for.

Long pitch - write the content that would show up on the back of the game box
...Sometimes, it's possible to love something a little too much. In order to taste a piece of heaven, John Smith, your average french-fry-loving office worker, must invent various lengthy, complex, and often ridiculous ways to avoid a confrontation with his worst, white-powdered, squeaky-red-nosed nightmare.

Description on RMN - write the description as you would present it on RMN

When everything comes down to either the french fries or the clown, there's some serious decisions that need to be made. John Smith, an average office worker, is only able to make it through the day by the tantalizing promise of gorging himself on his favorite food. But recently, it seems that the only employee at McD's is the Devil himself- Ronald McDonall. Will John find within his ordinary self the courage (or stupidity) to continue pursuing his taste of heaven, when faced with such a formidable foe?

Features:
- 30 puzzle stages with 5 adjustable difficulty levels! (Extremely Easy to Despairingly Difficult!)
- Coulrophobia!
- Cutscenes galore!
Ex:
John: (Ahh, nothing beats good fries after a tiring day at work.)
John: (...)
John: (Did McD's just switch out their employees?)
John: (... waitaminute.)
John: (Powdered face... bulbous nose... GAHH! IT'S A CLOWN!!)
-Later-
John: I- I'd like to have some fr-fries delivered to my h-house.
???: Alright, I'll come and deliver them to you personally.
John: !!!
John: N-no, y-you really sh-shouldn't bother.
???: It's my job. I'll be there in ten minutes.
???: *click*

- Suspense until the grand finale!
- A wondrously haunting soundtrack, created by a world-famous and long dead composer!
Listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVJD3dL4diY
- An excess of exclamations! (Features section exclusive!)
I can't stop laughing at "Dead: When People Are Killed". Time to brainstorm...

Tides of Time

Enter the Past: Change the Future

Over a thousand years ago existed a civilization known as Atlantis.
Atlantis was a civilization without equal, even by today's standards.
But what happened? Some say it sank into the ocean...
But how could such an advanced civilization not foresee the Tides of Time.

Royce is a young boy who has just finished his undergraduate degree in Physics.
As a part of his graduate studies he is exploring the mechanics of time.
In a freak accident Royce is transported back to the past. To his surprise he
is transported to Atlantis just days before the catastrophe that would
end its civilization. It's up to Royce to solve the mysterious events that lead
up to the end of Atlantis and even possibly change the future.

Tides of time is a timed puzzle game. You have 3 days (or 72 minutes) to solve all the puzzles before Royce and Atlantis is destroyed. The game features secret items that can add or even subtract time. Locations that can only be entered in at certain times. And characters that will say different things based on the time of the cycle. Tides of Time also featured multiple endings (Which will depend on your performance in puzzles, items found, and conversations undertook.)

Oops, I think I messed up the list of submitted pitches for some reason. My bad...
Anyways, here's my pitch:

Justice, Power, Love, Anger, Hatred, Beauty, Revenge, Jealousy, Annoyance, Affairs, Drama, Cowardice, and the One Potato Chip That Started It All
Pitched by: Kuraido (That's a darn long title, let's just name it "B.A.J.J.A.R.D.P.A.R.C.H and the One P-Chip That Started it All" pretty pleeeeease? :P)

Type of game:
- 2D Traditional RPG

The coolest unique thing about it:
- You get to experience and use different kinds of alchemy

Give context:
- You're a potato-chip-homunculi/chimera-slaying alchemist

Describe an example of play:
- Each kind of alchemy requires different type of controls to execute them

Create 3 mockup images (minimum):

What question is your game trying to answer?:
- How will you be able to stop the upcoming disaster that started from a single potato chip?

Pitch the Game!
Short pitch:
Pick a fight against homunculi and chimeras borned from a single potato chip

Long pitch:
Once upon a time, in a world where Alchemy is the mainstream and trend, a Potato Chip (P-Chip for convenience sake), which is said to be the beginning of all things, fell from the skies and broke to twelve fragments. These P-Chip fragments later on gave birth to Twelve Homunculi. Each homunculi refered to themselves as the embodiment of Justice, Power, Love, Anger, Hatred, Beauty, Revenge, Jealousy, Annoyance, Affairs, Drama and Cowardice respectively and they were later known as "The Twelve Sins". Moreover, the P-Chip crumbs gave birth to creatures known as "Chimeras" and now roam free within the land.
Join Kuraido the sodium alchemist and his companions as he embarks on a journey to prevent the Chimeras from running amok and put a stop to the The Twelve Sins from executing their sinister plans.

Description on RMN:
Play as Kuraido, a young man adept at sodium alchemy, who is determined to uncover the truth regarding the Potato Chip (or P-Chip) that was said to be the beginning of all things. Rumors say that this P-Chip was dropped by the gods, broke into twelve P-Chip fragments and scattered around the continent of Alkhemia leaving P-Chip crumbs on its wake. Kuraido sets on a journey to find these P-Chip fragments across the continent.

* Unique attack systems for each character that will put your reflexes to the test
* Characters' Stats Customization
* Non-linear game world
* Item creation through Alchemy
* Certain quests and actions affects the power of Homunculi
* There's no such thing as monsters dropping money! They drop loots other than money, darn it! :P
oh god my poor website's formatting...
Sorry about that. I'll just delete the one I've uploaded and resubmit it with a shorter name. Is that ok?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

No, it is beautiful, do not change it.

EDIT: By the way, is it fine to repeat yourself when making an RMN description? I mean, everything that I can say about the game in general has already been said in the mock-ups.
YES! That's the right idea, honestly. Your mockup work should help inform you when you craft your pitch, so naturally elements from that mockup would appear in your pitch.

I'd be surprised if it DIDN'T tbh

A 2-D experimental simulation game

What Kind of Game Is This?
Alter the past to affect the future! See the future results of your present actions immediately, and change what you do right now to see how it would turn out in the end! See the world through the eyes of God!

Why Is This Unique?
The world is in danger, but Darius is just trying to get by! 15-year-old swordsman Darius Kalashnikov feels pressured to achieve bold and daring feats to be accepted in Gaia's society. If not, he will be an outcast and have a generally competent set of skills. In other words, a total piece of crap! Darius afraid of being thought like that. He doesn't want to be considered mediocre by anyone. He just wants to live a normal life, regarded as successful by all and lauded in the streets. But Darius is not your average teenage swordsman. He can see the future results of all his possible present actions! Ever since Darius could remember, he had the power of foresight.

A question arises: if an omniscient entity knows everything, even about his own decisions in the future, does it therefore forbid any free will to that entity?

But How Do You Play?
You see a few Time Frames of Darius' life in front of you. They represent a timeline of events from start to finish of the foreseeable future. Time runs from left to right, starting with an inciting incident and ending with the last foreseeable conclusion. Anything beyond your upgradeable Line of Sight (L.O.S) is shrouded in darkness. The foreseeable future is a conclusion that you can change by selecting Choices in any frame of the current foreseeable timeline. Select choices that provide you with the eventuality that you think is most beneficial to see Darius succeed.

After selecting what you think is the most optimal set of Choices, you confirm your selection. Only the Choice for the current Time Frame is confirmed. The rest of the Time Frames are a trajectory of events that will happen if you decide to keep the current projected Choices.

Do You Have Screenshots?

(One. Yeah, it's not enough. I'll get some more to you on Monday.)

Glossary of Definitions
Time Frame
A still frame of a moment in time. A Time Frame signifies a snapshot of Darius during an important event in his life.
Line of Sight (L.O.S)
The visible future. Line of Sight begins at 1, which means that you can see one Time Frame into the future. As you upgrade your L.O.S, you can begin to see even further into the future, up to 5 or 6 Time Frames.
Choices
The list of choices below each Time Frame. They signify Darius' possible real-life decisions.

Can you put it shortly?
An obscenely addictive, philosophically harrowing puzzle game about the cursed power of omniscience!

I'm interested! Elaborate more, please.
Take on the role of 15-year-old swordsman Darius, a boy who can see every single possibility to any of his actions! Construct an elaborate labyrinth of choices that will determine one hopeful future out of the many depressing endings! Explore the philosophical implications of knowing everything, and how that affects your free will! Explore different endings, with a flexible new decision tracker that dynamically tracks the consequences of your decisions with unseen depth! 15 story rings track various arcs of decision-making so that you can be almost sure that no one ending will be the same!
