JANUARY 18 SOPA BLACKOUT
Posts
Yes!!! Traffic!
Actually, I think we should totally do it. Raise awareness in our damp dark corner of the depths of the web. We should have, "SOPA STRIKE" on the page when it happens!

I'm all for RMN joining the blackout, RMN might as well not exist if SOPA/PIPA passes.
Also Liberty,
Reading that (quoted) argument in this context comes off as really, really, really comically strange.
Also Liberty,
So go outside, read a book, spend time with friends or watch TV

On the other hand, if we stay open on the 18th WE'LL BE THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN! Think of the traffic!!
I like the way this man thinks.

It could exist on IRC. Take it underground, can they block IRC? Gamepages could be reduced to shouting ads on the main chat, at least 5 minutes apart please. Set up servers or something haha (ah the good old days of downloading music)
Sure there's probably 1001 ways for an individual or a small community to get around, but it's not just about rmn, it's the whole communication, information spirit of he internet, the way people relate, partipate and create on the internet that would be destroyed. It has to remain the people's space and a space of freedom or it would tend to become one more (gigantic) market place.

No doubt. My post was more of a joke :P
This is a serious issue but I'm not gonna get all uptight about it. If I woke up tomorrow and the internet was suddenly blocked, my life would go on. The culture of sharing and using the internet as a community gathering tool isn't the problem. Sites aren't going to be shut down cause we're talking to each other. If nobody ever posted/distributed illegal copyrighted material, there would be no danger to that freedom. Problem is the bad people using that wonderful network as a way to spread illegal stuffs. Too much freedom allows that side to grow out of control.
It doesn't even take a bad person, we just might want to share an image from a movie or sing our favorite song as a tribute. That's why SOPA is bad, from what I understand of it.
I agree that SOPA(what I've heard of it) is extreme and shouldn't exist. It's trying to weed out the bad stuff with a sweeping flamethrower attack. But at the same time if there were rules laid down and enforced in the first place we wouldn't be so desensitized to the fact that we are almost all pirates. If there wasn't such a culture of piracy there would be no issue. When something you personally created is being ripped off, you take offense and do everything you can to stop it.
Maybe tearing everything down and starting over isn't a bad idea? Look at our government, nah, our society. There are plenty of examples of systems that are obsolete but continue to be used even though it stunts our growth as a people. You can't just put a band-aid on a major issue and expect it to adapt. It has to be rebuilt from the ground up; let us occupy.
I guess it's just because I grew up without the internet and think it does more harm than good. Kids these days know too much for their own good! Globalization is awesome but the seedy underbelly of the internet is rotten to the core.
But hey, I'm not a political analyst. I don't keep myself apprised of all the hot button issues. I just want to live my life and enjoy my time. I can do that with or without the internet. We're all doomed anyways. When we run out of clean air and water and life giving resources, the internet will be the least of our worries ^.^
*I have no doubt all that could be ripped apart by any of the political power hitters around(feel free), but that's my take on this whole dealy*

IRC operates on top of TCP/IP just like the WWW does, so yes they can block IRC. I heard that the DNS filtering provisions might be dropped though, so who knows (the bill is still terrible though).

This is patently false. It isn't that "kids know too much for their own good", but that times have changed. The internet is young and the common code of ethics is still very juvenile. That will change as the internet generation grows up and their values mature.
And really, you're just acting like an old bastard reminiscing about the good old days when everything was pure and simple :p I do that occasionally too.

meh.
The people complaining about piracy destroying music and the performing arts and family values and planet earth were all complaining about the cassette tape and VHS too. If we continually give their bitchings legitimacy, they'll eventually try to sell licenses for how many people you're allowed to play a song for.
Screw them.

Globalization is awesome
wtf.
Globalisation destroyed the manufacturing sector in most western countries, especially in the USA. I don't see how anybody but a speculative financial parasite can still approve of globalism at this stage of the game.

Silliness. The internet is what you make of it. If you go looking for child porn, yeah, you're going to get child porn. Alternatively, if you go looking for how to fix your car's broken carburetor, you can find that too.
This aspect of the internet is what makes it great. If we let governments go in and protect us from vile child porn, they'll eventually try to protect us from vile broken carburetor fraudsters.

Now you've made me feel bad :( If you have any dignity, apologize to the rice.
haha *rolls eyes*
You have a funny way of taking the things I said into a different direction to support your views, you would make an excellent politician! But I have no desire to get into any sort of back and forth with you(although I'm very tempted :<).
Globalization is awesome because we can make friends with people all over the world and share our lives. I don't care if it broke other stuff. The times they are a-changin'.
I'm not replying to this topic anymore, I've already bored myself enough. You can have the last word if you'd like :P I'm not very interested in this political stuff anyways. I just follow it a little so I know when the apocalypse will occur(we're getting there). I'll go make some games instead :)

afaik it is "we will decide later" which is politispeak for "tell everybody it is removed and then add it after the bill is signed into law".

that was the most defensive exit out of an argument I've ever seen
Pretty sure that's directly at me...
What argument? I stated my opinion with no intention of arguing at all. Everyone else knows more than I do anyways and most likely disagrees on all points, so if I attempted to argue you'd have something to say about my lack of knowledge. A lose-lose situation.
I know technically I said I wouldn't respond anymore, but I meant I'm not going to respond to the ripping apart of my view of the world. Ignorance is bliss ^.^
:3
That's not globalisation. That's just the internet as it is now. Yeah, the internet is awesome. I wholeheartedly agree.
Globalisation is a totally different animal. I'd get into it, but I'd probably just be talking to myself again.

The Internet is an excellent resource for me. Without it, I don't know how else I would get information from (besides spending countless hours reading in libraries, around people I may or may not like).
I fully support RMN's participation in the blackout, if the management is willing to go through with it. As some previous posters have commented, the purpose of the SOPA blackout is to show everyone what it's like to have limited access to the information that you seek (because of the greedy assholes copyrighting shit from left to right and trying to put a leash on their consumers on what they can and can't do, and how often).
It's rather cold outside, so I'm going to go have me some sopa ("soup" in Spanish).

Well, when I first typed the word I thought maybe I was using it wrong so I checked wikipedia(I know, it's perfect):
Globalization or (Globalisation) refers to the increasingly global relationships of culture, people and economic activity. Most often, it refers to economics: the global distribution of the production of goods and services, through reduction of barriers to international trade such as tariffs, export fees, and import quotas. Globalization accompanied and allegedly contributed to economic growth in developed and developing countries through increased specialization and the principle of comparative advantage. The term can also refer to the transnational circulation of ideas, languages, and popular culture.
Green words support my statement, and blue yours. :P
Anywho, I'll just take some screenshots of some topics now so that when/if RMN blacks out I can get my fix of dramas until it's back~
The first thing I'm doing if SOPA passes is buying cd's made in china and burning every movie and cd I own and giving them out at walmart.
