FINAL FANTASY VII UNCUT
Posts
So I was watching that Star Wars Uncut thing, in which fans make a 15-second slot of Star Wars A New Hope. What if we did the same thing, in RPG Maker, to one of the most famous RPGs: Final Fantasy VII?
Specifically, we could do the opening reactor sequence. Somebody could make the intro, someone could make the first map with the train, first battle, dead soldiers, "C'mon newcomer", etc; all the way up until the escape sequence. The fun would be in the lack of consistency and the "twists" people add. What if Barret goes from a black macho man to, suddenly, the RTP Moustache Dude?
There would be some logistical things to work out, and the maker would have to be voted on.
What do you guys think?

I think this would be really fun!
Organizing it will be quite a challenge, though. Particularly when it comes to gameplay. Or will there be gameplay?

It'd be interesting to try something small to see how it goes before doing anything major. I'd probably chip in.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

At first I didn't see "in rpg maker" and thought your idea was for us to literally do it just like Star Wars Uncut: shoot home videos of ourselves acting out 15 second segments of FF7. Hahahaha. That would be even more amazing.
I think a pretty workable way to split up the work would be by map. Not sure how to handle the monsters.
The problem is that because we have access to RTP resources and downloaded resources, many of the maps are going to end up looking quite similar and it won't even be easy to tell they were made by different people. So, I would suggest a "no RTP or rips" rule. Force everyone to make their own original resources, so that they are all as different as possible. But with no quality requirements beyond functioning correctly. (This should apply to graphics only, because making your own music and sound effects is ridiculous - I assume we will use the OST?)
I'm definitely interested, in any case, regardless of how you end up doing it. Count me in!

I think this is a fun idea. I wouldn't mind pitching in and helping out with combining everything in the end.
Someone would need to go through the intro sequence and split it into multiple maps where one thing happens in each of the maps. You then walk to the end of the map and end up in the next one.

I'm 100% behind this idea, but not being able to use RTP graphics would spell trouble for me, regardless of what maker is used. Therefore, assuming we're delineating tasks into teams, I would ask to not be on the graphics team. Saying that, I'm not sure which team I would be most effective in. Maybe beta-testing?

I don't think there would be a "graphics team" really, if it's done like the original each person would just be responsible for 100% of the content that appears on their map.
How would original graphics spell trouble for you? Just because you've never made them? That doesn't make sense. Anyone can draw one map in MS Paint. My mom can draw one map in MS Paint, and she doesn't know what a file is.

If badly-drawn, MSPaint-quality graphics isn't a concern for mapping, okay. It would go a long way in making things hilariously bad. Anyway, I would suppose that each mapper would be responsible for making graphics for not just the "base" map, but whatever objects, NPCs, and what-have-you appear in that map. The "each mapper would be 100% responsible for what appears on their map" clause. But what about stuff that each map shares? Like party member graphics? Am I correct in assuming there would be one set of party member graphics for the game?

When it comes to battles, maybe we could split all of the actor/monster/battleback graphics between different people just like the maps.
It's okay that it'll be horribly inconsistent, because that's the point. :-)
How would game-common aspects work? Things like characters, materia, battles, and menus? Prepare a template project? Throw it all to the winds? Remove battles entirely and focus on more of a cinematic/adventure experience?
In terms of organizing I think we can break the game down into small segments and participants can ask for a segment and they get allocated a range of switches and variables and other DB-related fields. Give them two weeks to finish the segment and PM it to the organizer. If they run out of time the segment becomes open again. Reserve big scenes for good/regular contributors.
I also found the final battle here

Scripting at least needs to be centralized for the game to work at all.
I had a dream last night that Iron Gaia was for some inexplicable reason mentioned on the Wikipedia page for Final Fantasy VII. I didn't remember it until just now.
That is all.

I helped bring that article to Featured status a few years ago (it has since drowned in fancruft).
Keep brainstorming, guys. As for original graphics...it would be cool, but unnecessary. If someone wants to do mac and blue, the by all means! The goal is to be as inclusive as possible.

why not just do scene recreations, play through them yourself, record it, and then string all the recordings together into a cohesive story?

Well, then it's not different from the <Movie> Uncut projects. You're taking a video game and making a movie out of it. Lame.
Making an actual playable game is way cooler and more original. And also more fitting, since an actual playable game is what the original FF7 was.

Here's an idea. Why not make FF7 by doing what each of us does best?
We hand out a chunk of the game and then someone can make a playthrough video of it, instead of having to make a complicated patchwork game.
Though honestly, FF7 might suck for this.
First five people have fun, then everyone else gets crap rpg gameplay. OK, k-hos you get end of random encounter 4, and SorceressKyrsty you get climbing down ladder and crossing to the area you set up the bomb.
Okay, Jude you get weirdo flashback scene.
