LIGHTING EFFECTS, RM2K3
Posts
Are there no tutorials teaching how to make lighting effects (in this case street lamps) for rm2k3 ?
If not (didn't find any), how do you do that? thx

Are you just looking for a glow of light? or maybe beaming light? anything to do with shadows? (To clarify what it is you want to do.)
I've never attempted that kind of visual effect before so I can't help you. Ask Miracle. I've seen him do some nice lighting effects in some posted screens in that topic. It probably has to do with using pictures that have a bit of transparency.

Thx, it would be a glow. I know Blindmind also made a beautiful glow in a mapping tutorial of dungeons (but he doesn't explain how!).
cool, I always think that you only play rmn games and participate on the forums and some other things but not actually participate in game making. Nice thing to know. also... sorry but I haven't use RM2k3 for a long long time so I can't help you :/ but wish you luck.
Like this? (click here)
Make a Picture of white-to-gray circles surrounded by black or colorless and show it with some transparency on your map. You can also use a colorless circle with a few gray shades outlines and surrounded by black (as in my screenshot). I use iDraw to make these kinds of graphics.
If you want to include shadows, you'll also have to draw them on a Picture. Use a screenshot of your map to position the shadows and when done drawing erase everything but the shadows. Make the shadows black or in shades of gray and the rest colorless. In the engine, show the Picture with some transparency again.
You can also put the lighting effects and your map together as a Panorama file, but that's something I haven't tried to do yet.
You can also type "rpg maker lighting effects" on google. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

author=AveeI actually did that without results but for vx.

This said, thanks.
I found this in a tutorial by Bindmind, which I find extremely well done :

how would you go about to obtain something close to that? (The thing is for my map they would be perfect, as it's evening and not pitch black yet.)
Also they're not cut by the first layer background (or is it?), one impossible thing to deal with in a crowded city full of houses, streetlamps being generally near buildings.)
I think you would take a screenshot of your map and paste it as a layer in a Photoshop file, and then add a layer above it and draw the lighting as you would want it to look, and then save the top layer as a PNG. In RMN2k3, you would show picture with a bit of transparency to achieve the desired effect.
I've never bothered to do this before, so I am just guessing here.

Thx a lot, I'll try that, though I've never used the picture option in rm2k3. Sounds (finally! after a few disastrous tries) like a safe way to obtain what I wish.
Does rm2k3 support alpha channel or .pngs with transparency???? If it does, then yeah, paste your map on photoshop, and create a new layer, then do the lighting there.
It doesn't. You have to assign the transparency IN the engine, which of course doesn't let you make only certain areas transparent and whatnot.

RM2k3 doesn't let you to make only certain areas transparent but, using the same techinique than this pic you can give that effect that it actually has more transparency in one place than another. I hope this is usefull someway.
Right, got exactly what I wanted, using the transparency in Gimp but could not import it to rm2k3. So, I tried indexing the colors as to have 256 colors and all my work disappears the moment I index... ?

I can't explain why that is happening, but I will say that I never use the import function in 2k3. I just copy the image to the Pictures folder then use it in the event. You don't have to use the resource manager to add files to your game(unlike VX).
If you upload the image I can take a look at it and try to figure it out, or at least convert it in a usable way.
That's so nice, here it is (it's extremely pale):

I'll also try just pasting it in the picture folder.
As you can see there's a slight problem......... so pale you don't see it ? but shouldn't there at least be a frame around it? ooh, maybe I can see them, 7, 10 very pale ovals, so maybe they don't disappear, they're just quasi invisible (they were quite visible under RGB? The problem is I can't seem to revert the transparency.. sorry for all the complication, anyways, I'll try and paste it as it is.

Yeah, it has to do with how you saved the file. Perhaps because it was coverted to 256 after saving? Try starting with a 256 new file.
I opened your image in MSpaint, then copied the entire thing and pasted it into iDraw, then saved it. I tested it in 2k3 and it works. Looks good with about a 70% transparancy.

Glad you could do something of it and that it does look good. Right I figured that's what I should do next time. Thx a lot.
I tried something (rays!), and seen how pale the whole thing was could hardly see how it came out, found something else for the others and forgot about it...
