RMN V4.2 - DONE!

Posts

Pages: first 12 next last
A minor update to RMN is forthcoming, planned for 10 AM EST on Sunday. The update requires a minor downtime (a few minutes or so).

Changes coming in the latest update:

  • User menu is returning (view profile/ignore user/send message when clicking on username in forums/search)
  • You can edit your ignore settings to "ignore" PMs (by ignore I mean hide them when you are ignoring the user, it doesn't prevent messages from being sent) and "ignore" posts completely or show a little blurb (You are ignoring this user...etc).
  • You can now rename locker files
  • Support for Events with anonymous participants
  • Some small CSS changes (buttons)
  • Fix for double-posting / post-throttling - only 1 post per 30 seconds.
  • Game download limit - this is limited per IP. Each IP can only access a game download once every 1 hour. This is to help prevent download spamming.
  • Game Pages can be marked as For Developers Only, and only developers/testers can access the page and receive notices for posts made on that page
  • Adding links to the 5 latest game design blogs to the Game Design forum
  • Adding links to the 5 latest request blogs to the help & Requests forum
  • Update to the Code of Conduct
  • More hyperlinks on the frontpage to lists on RMN (ie- What's Buzzing now links to the Frontpage Site Feeds)
  • Sort games by Download Date Added
  • List latest bulletins, utilities and links on the top of the Engines page
  • Cleaned up the footer a bit
  • Search field (in the upper right) now searches for scripts, too
  • Some minor bug fixes (ie- the Lastest blog on a game's profile is determined by Date Added instead of Date Updated)
  • Probably some other minor things, and some behind-the-scenes administrative tools for us staff

We have had issues with download spamming in the past, and while a 1 dl/hour isn't the most perfect solution, I think it will help! (In a rare situation, someone could upload a game, you download it, but it has an error and so the download is updated and you have to wait a bit before getting the new download. But people can't spam downloads now)

The Ignore feature (if anyone will use it) can be set so that you can see that an ignored person has posted.

These things are in the pipeline (I just didn't get to them in time, sorry!)

Some things I would like to do:
  • Engine subscriptions
  • a Who's Currently Active on RMN list
  • Tag tutorials as Beginner/Intermediate/Expert
  • Allow for the upload of a file for Tutorials/Scripts (for demos of the script, for example)
  • Automatically dole out certain achievements in the overnight Cron job
  • *Come up with a list of achievements that should be auto-doled out!
  • Add Contributor role to game profiles, for artists/writers/musicians
  • New & Notable functionality on RMN (I see cool things in the queue every now and then I'd like to highlight. ..maybe a return of the SNEWS?)
  • Display script/article category descriptions in an accessible way in submission form
  • Explore adding a new "Episode Complete" status to games (is it feasible? Worthwhile?)

Thanks for browsing RMN!
Love the upcoming new features. But just one thing...

Each IP can only access a game download once every 1 hour.

I'm curious as to know why 1 hour? How about say, 30 minutes? I think 1 hour is kinda long...

I mean, does a regular download really take 1 hour in the general perspective, anyway? It's definitely much lesser than that. 30 minutes would be more suitable, if you ask me...

Well, I can feel the modem users, but do the modem users outweigh the broadband users today?
so wait I cannot download game a and then game b at the same time? or is this hour limit for each game?

This in particular sounds mighty useful.

I would think this is limited to a specific download. As in, you can't download the same game twice in the same hour. (currently you can spam click the download link to inflate the download count)

Yes. To clarify, you can't download the same download for a game twice in the same hour (so if a single game has like 10 downloads you can download all 10, but not the same one twice.) So you can download from game A, B, C... Z in the same hour, too.

I hope so! I found having games to be "Private" to be a useful development/coordination tool (anyone remember the mysterious Moon Base Mario blogs?), so i'd thought I'd incorporate a feature to do it on public gameprofiles. I didn't test it much, so I hope it works!
I was a little worried about the 1 hour thing, but it seems fine now that you've clarified. Everything else seems like they'd be useful additions to the site.

Where's the upsurge, this time? I guess nobody should be too surprised if SOPA, PIPA, etc. are voted without a blink next time they come around...

This has nothing to do with how long the download takes. It has to do with stopping people from spam-downloading the same game to inflate their Game Downloads. There should be very few reasons to download the same game on the same DAY, let alone within the same hour. Unless you delete the file right after its done, or the download gets corrupt, there is no reason to download the same file twice. I think the only reason it is an hour is for these circumstances, otherwise I would feel 24 hours would be appropriate.

Well, I'm glad at least I got some kind of reaction, and violent with that, thx, ankylo. This said, without screaming out of the top of my head, I still think it's an extremely bad idea, sorry!

Sorry, chana. Ankylo has added you to his ignore list. Your words can no longer reach him!

Kidding, kidding. Seriously though, these sound like some useful changes, and I look forward to seeing them implemented.
Actually I look forward to the return of the ignore. There are some people whose posts I'd definitely like to see less of, and if you want to check what they do say on a certain subject, it's as easy as clicking on the post to read again.

Though I would like the ability to hide the post once again if it's not worth reading...

And yay! Lots of good stuff coming up. ^.^
Ok, this should be all done. First thing to remember to solve any weird layout/js/css issues is to do a hard refresh (ctrl + F5, right-click -> reload/refresh) or clear your temporary internet files.
Thanks ankylo!

Btw, for anyone who didn't know, ankylo coded all of the cool updates.
