PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT A HALF ASS / BAD REVIEW
Posts
I was just reading a few reviews were the person reviewing the game was a complete jack ass and just really half assing it. Which, is annoying and dumb. However, who on here really takes those people seriously?
Also, you got those people that write a seaming nice review, yet highly inaccurate. Its like they didn't really play the game, but wanted to say "Hey look at me, I wrote a review."
Either way, that brings me to my point of posting this. I hate how when people get one and or both of those types of reviews and they get all mean, nasty and defensive. I mean really, if you honestly felt that it was a crap review, why are you even wasting your time replying. If you think about it, by replying you are only getting down to their level and proving that your a cry baby.
EDIT: Now, let me clarify something. Replying with disagreement and being a cry baby about it are two different things.

I agree that reviews, done by one single person (>opinion) take way too much importance in the eyes of the makers, probably because of the final score that'll show your game with a low one to the several hundreds of people looking for games and all the rmn members, stigma which can be hard to "erase". I really would be all for reviews without the scoring.
This said, congrats for being able to have that distance with the bad reviexs.

The guy that reviewed my game, I didn't agree with a whole lot of what he said. I could have said several things, but I didn't and we discussed it like mature adults.
I think people take reviews to seriously to be honest.

...and then you came here to create a topic about half assed/bad reviews. Am I missing something or is that actually worse than just replying to the reviewer? If you didn't take it seriously why did you start this topic, or is it just to impress us with how mature you are?

No, not what i meant. I liked his review some as well as i disliked it. He was nice and cool about it and we talked about it.
I was talking about the ass hole reviewers, which if you paid attention to what I first wrote. You would have seen that.
EDIT: Also, if you were paying attention, you would see that this topic was sparked by me reading other reviews. Hence how I wrote "I was just reading a few reviews" in the very first line.

EDIT:
In reference to the original post, it's perfectly fine to have a go at people for writing half-arsed reviews. It people can't bother their arse to do it properly then you shouldn't bother taking them seriously.
I see what your saying. Sometimes though, your really fighting a losing battle when you try to "go at them." Where I mostly agree with you, you are likely to just get more pissed off when that person doesn't reply to your "attack" for lack of better terms. Seeing as they acted like a child in the first place, they will continue to act accordingly.
debating on the internet in general is pretty childish dude (I would know!). like i don't really get what you're trying to say here. could you at least post examples of these asshole reviews??

This, in any case, is quite accurate, I've seen it quite a few times because the rule seems to be there : if you react antagonistically in any way to a review, "you can't take criticism", doesn't leave much room for opposition.

Very well spoken sir.
I've noticed a few reviewers who like to ordain themselves and treat the receiver as if they should be grateful for merely having been reviewed, even though the review itself is lackluster and poorly written.
Goes with the territory, I suppose. A free and open process is a double edged sword. It lets the douches play too.

The rule is this: If someone dislikes something about your game, they are doing a half assed review and their opinion doesn't count.
author=ClyveA bit simple (not the opinion, but your view in this matter) no?

Also I think a review should be about what is good in the game (as far as the reviewer can know), and what is bad in the game (same thing). The fact that the player liked or disliked the game should not interfere in any way with the review (as far as it can be done), imo.

That was sarcastic.

A review fails when it doesn't serve at least one of its two possible purposes:
1) Let potential players know what to expect from playing the game.
2) Give the developer useful suggestions about what could be better about the game.
To be honest, I don't think reviews really matter a whole lot till you have a handful of them. Because really, if you only have one or two. That's just a few opinions from the thousands of people on here.
Basically, if you have a chunk of reviews and they all pretty much lead to the same direction. Then that's something to take notice.

I was just curious about the communities opinions on the subject. As much as some people deserve it, I wont throw anyone under the bus.

If it were a game you could purchase, yes. For a free game that eats up like next to no bandwidth and was made by an amateur, people should just suck it up and download what they think looks interesting. In other words, I would have to disagree.
We had a review staff for RPG Revolution for the forums. After some time, we decided to make it more in the form of feedback (still going through the details) and leaving out the scores, since it's about commenting on what works and what doesn't work, and scoring adds an unneeded amount of competition. Perhaps that is something that can be utilized here. While I've used a scoring based method in the past, in recent times I find it sometimes inaccurate, and that I allow a biased opinion to affect the score. I'd rather read the review based upon its own merits and not be turned on or off because of a score that may not be reflected accurately.
We have staff who check the reviews. Most of the time as long as they're reasonably well-written and not flame-war worthy, they'll pass. Why? Because people have their own opinions of games and you can't please everyone when you write a review. It's usually about how you felt the game stacked up and that's going to change for each person based on their own experiences in gaming.
This is how you get people who gush over the most simplistic and annoyingly stupid games, and others who are very critical of the things they play. It's part and parcel of being a site like RMN that caters towards players and developers.
My advice? Get over it.
That said, there was some talk a while back about looking into making a difference between critiques and reviews. We might look into it again.*
If you have any issues with a review that someone has written, drop a line to one of the staff. Don't be stupid about it though, okay? Saying that such and such review is bad because it's critical of your slow-ass walk and text speed will make you come off looking like a complete moron and possibly make the staffers want to shove your head in an oven. **
And I'd be down to help them with that. Just sayin'.

This post was not made to any one person, but in general to the whole "reviews are blaaaurgh!" mentality.
