INTERRACIAL RELATIONS
Posts
Places I've lived, there's plenty of interracial couples, so almost nothing catches my attention.
I say almost, I do notice whenever I see a white dude and black girl. That one's rare. I mean black dudes date white chicks all the time, but the opposite really stands out.
Mankind will eventually be one mixed race anyway.
Old tribal genes are always being bred into the bigger melting pot where the old identity disappears. Just like people in the US are "Americans" despite their ancestors immigrating from elsewhere, we'll eventually be "Humans" (or "Earthlings").

And when you consider that we all originated from some African backwater ages ago, the very concept of "race" quickly starts to lose its meaning. At the end of the day we're all just homo sapiens.

Or cyborgs.
I'm not racist in the slightest and I think the very idea is abhorrent, but I also grew up in a very "White" area. I am surrounded by ignorant farmers in one of the least multi-cultural parts of England. At my college there were a grand total of three black students out of five thousand, and around fifty asian students who simply didn't mix or even attempt to integrate themselves.
If anybody was not White British, their nationality became the main topic of conversation. For example my best friend is Scottish and the amount of jokes at his expense just began to get ridiculous.
I am not racist, but due to this upbringing I still do a double take when I see interracial relationships. I support them 100% and have in fact dated a Chinese girl in the past, but thanks to my ridiculous single cultural upbringing the mixed races are the first thing I notice. It's an irritating side of me but I simply cannot get out of this habit.

author=ThnapI am kind of the same way, but because I grew up in Middle-of-nowhere-ville, Saskatchewan. I don't think I saw a black person until I was like 12 (no joke).

Racism irks the shit out of me, though.
The only thing worse than racism is selective racism. (i.e. when people are quick to defend everyone except white people)
But anyway, I'm white married to a brown-skinned hispanic. We get funny looks at Crackerbarrell sometimes, but only from very very old people.
Attraction is a great denominator. Only thing I ask is, if I say I'm not attracted to so and so person, and they happen to be a different race than I am, don't be playing the race card. You can appreciate the way something looks, or not like the way something looks without having an irrational hatred for the genetic and ethnic makeup of that person. Previous statement should be obvious to anyone with an IQ greater than or equal to a banana, but sadly this is not always the case.

I defs get where you're coming from, Dudesoft! I was yet another person raised in a whitebread town, going to school with white kids and being taught by and served by and sold to by more white people. Even though I lived in a town where there are supposed to be a whole schwack of first nations folks, I can count the number of aboriginal kids I went to school with on one hand.
So, yeah, because I was raised seeing only white folks married to each other for a ridiculously long time, I do double take when I see interracial couples. Same thing when I see same sex couples (although usually if it is a lesbian couple I'm ogling because lesbians are adorable OTL), or any other couple that isn't white and straight and typically what you'd see in a whitebread town. I mean, I was talking to a friend of mine who is a product of an interracial coupling, and she was complaining about how people usually assume she's adopted when she's out with her mom because her mom is white, and my gut reaction was "PFFFT I WOULD HAVE ASSUMED THE EXACT SAME THING BECAUSE INTERRACIAL COUPLES ARE NOT THE DEFAULT ASSUMPTION FOR ME OTL"
So mostly I try not to stare too hard, and every time I catch myself going "WOAH THAT X PERSON IS WITH THAT Y PERSON AS A COUPLE!", I remind myself that yes that is actually a thing, even if I didn't see it consistently for 19 years of my life. I've defs gotten better at seeing interracial couples and have it not consciously register, but I still do think about it sometimes! Nothing wrong with that, just a sign of how I grew up and what I've been exposed to all my life. (although probably a sign that what kids are exposed to in movies and books and what not needs to be diversified a little!)
WHAT ABOUT THE WHITE PEOPLE, GUYS ;_____;

hey, this isn't funny. we are frequently persecuted for our lack of basketball skills. maybe put a trigger warning on your post next time
From the sounds of it, the whole issue is a nurture problem. I guess the next two generations along and this idea of even labelling it "interacial" will be gone.
I grew up in South Texas and my parents weren't exactly racist, but plenty of the families we hung out with were.
I was really introduced to racism when I went over to friends houses and the old people would be sitting there saying some pretty horrible things in spanish about blacks. All of us kids took it with a grain of salt but looking back on it now, I realize that I am a bit racist, even if it's unintentional. If I see a pretty hispanic girl or white girl with a black guy, I pretty well immediately think "Well, no one decent will ever date them again." It's not that I think it's wrong. I just naturally refer back to what I was raised to think.
I am a bit ashamed of myself for thinking that way and I've known several really nice couples that were interracial. Hopefully, I can just raise my kids to see "interracial couples" as just "couples".

Still, the amount of actually racist people is definitely dwindling, so in a couple generations, our grandkids won't be raised in a world where people think that mixed races is wrong.
What will our grandkids' kids think of us? What do you think of people from the early 1900's?
This same forum topic in the early 1900's would be a wildly different conversation.

Asian dudes and black women get the short end of the interracial stick.
They'll have to create some sort of alliance.

I'm all for interracial relations for the most part. Hellz yeah, diversity!, etc. etc.
In fact, although I'm South Asian by descent, I'm not very fond of other South Asians (cultural reasons) and would only date exclusively OUTSIDE my race (well, unless I met someone really, really special). Does this count as racism? I actually don't know...

No, it ain't racism if it's about cultural preferences.
I care more about Asian cultures than my own, yet that doesn't mean I despise other white french Canadians.
Well, I live in Serbia, and we don't have many foreigners (Except for Chinese, but they stick to themselves). I'm not racist, and don't have anything against all of the races, but some people in my country do... they're the torch-carrying mob type!
