60mB in audio

uncompressed so it will Be around 100mB when zipped

the detail in my game is very high (i think anyway) ;D

You should think about making your game stand on legs other than rich multimedia. How on earth are you using 90MB for graphics?
A note on the filesize: for me personally, it's really not a big deal to download a 150 MB RM* game. I delete the game when I'm done playing anyways, rather than stocking up some kind of LIBRARY of them, which I know is popular with the minority of indie RPG players. Go ahead and make it large, most people have several GB free to put the game anyways :).

By the way, what I've seen of ToA on your game page looks gorgeous. I especially like the battle setup from "test" and the panorama you used in "cave test." I'm not too familiar with RMXP- did you do anything custom to make that battle scene, in either coding or graphics? Also, did you do that panorama in "cave test" yourself or rip it from a commercial game? Either way, well done :D.

And, uhm... if you like, I could test your demo for you. I can't promise I'll finish it if it's long, because I'm pretty busy right now with college classes, but I'd at least try! I really look forward to playing this someday!

P.S. WIP is a dumbiehead and he wears funny clothes; obviously you'll need real substance behind the game to make it any good, because a pretty game that isn't fun to play is obviously a bad game, but from what I've seen I definitely hope you don't compromise on the game. Maybe you can use better, smaller file types to decrease the size of the game somewhat? Even if you didn't, it wouldn't make a difference to me, really. That does bother some people though, so maybe you should check that out.

If you're using BMP files, change them to PNGs.
And if you're using RMXP, it's actually illegal to distribute the RTP, according to the EULA. You're supposed to direct people to Enterbrain's website. Dunno if you're using RMXP or not, though.

One thing you might consider doing is reducing the bitdepth of your graphics. You're rarely going to use more than 256 unique shades in a single sprite, for example. Tilesets might need to remain 16-bit or 32-bit, but charactersets and battlers can probably be brought down to 256. A lot of battle animations probably can be, too. It's usually not a big enough deal to bother with, but if you're going to be making something this big you probably need to treat efficiency as a huge deal, as if you were running on an OLD computer.

Also, PLEASE be sure you've taken Ocean's advice. If you're using BMPs for graphics, (or WAVs for sound for that matter), you really, really, really need to convert them to compressed formats. PNG is a lossless compression, so you won't suffer any quality loss from converting, and you're not going to find many people that can tell the difference between raw WAVs and MP3s, so those need to be converted too.

Also, a word to the wise: if it's going to be this big, I sincerely hope we're talking all original resources here. I would be severely pissed if I downloaded a game this big only to find out they were all graphics and sound I had seen used in better ways before.
:D Mr. Y i edited all the graphics myself using fireworks .....

;) Ocean i have converted them all to jpegs (a lil smaller than pngs)

thanks f0r repling

p.s mY keYBOard mashed had t0 paste letters :'( :'(

jpegs are lossy compression (well, except for lossless jpeg) so you're going to lose a lot of quality there. PNGs are your best bet, like Ocean suggested and Shadowtext reiterated.

Not jpgs! ... well, can you get back the originals? Jpgs are terrible for sprites and stuff. I didn't think RMXP used jpgs. You'll always want to use PNGs when working with sprites and objects that have transparencies. Hopefully you didn't save tilesets or charactersets as jpgs, and just the picture folder.

@Shadowtext: If it's the same one as in a Tales of Aria myspace page, it'll be default RMXP RTP resources with photo/panorama backgrounds at times, and anime person pictures. If that's the case I wouldn't use the RMXP RTP tilesets at all and instead try to go all panorama with it. At least that'd be worth the MB's, I'm not fond of the RMXP tilesets.
hehe trust me n0 file is Bigger than 500kB

:'( i think i may have to remove a few ingame voices

direct people to Enterbrain's website (true But that will stop at least 60% from playing)

well graphics will Be original in final ver (hehe im gonna pay an artist to do em :o)

sound (im not a classical pianist ) But i do spend a lot of time searching for the right theme)

Why not make a non-voice one, and a seperate voiced game for those who want to hear it? That way, those that don't like big file sizes (or voices) can still download it.
yea!! got a new keyboard ok check these 2 pics out...

jpeg (558kb)

png (2.34mb)

I know i can lower the quality a lil more

games takes me 90mins to mega run through id say its about 11% complete

oh the voices are only 17mb alltogether but thats a good idea
A LOT of RMXP projects seem to inflate to massive sizes for reasons that fail to be clear upon playing.

But yeah, man. Don't use JPGs. PNGs are the way to go. WAVs take up too much space.

Making a whole other version of the game without voice would save on a lot of space, though would be an arduous task to undertake unless you started out with it in mind.

It makes it REALLY HARD to link to Enterbrain's site in order to get people to download the RTP. The RTP installer isn't even in English and the page is intimidating in its over explanation.

I reasonable solution, I expect, is to just include the RTP and DLL and encrypt the file. Files can't be distributed that way. (Although it cheats people out of dissecting your game)
the tile set i use is 6mb (its 1 massive tileset (all the the tilesets on 1 tile)

i made a game with rpg2k using 100% panoramas (but i had trouble when i tried to do it in xp)

oh and i havent updated the talesofaria site in a while so all the pics you see look a lot better now + ive changed the char pics ive been making these

going for that style now ;) u think they look good?

(text goes in the bubble) until i can find the speach bubble script :P
ok sort out a few things out need to edit Jins character sprite and now that i have a new keyboard i can start sorting out the text....

oh ive been editing the character sprites so the characters head can look up down left and right (its not major but ive never seen it in other games)

anyhoot ill upload the tester later tonight....

just had a thought is there a program out there that scans ur folder and removes the files rpgmaker does not use in the game......

is there if so plz tell....

im down to 120 megs unzipped so thats gotta be about 80megs zipped or .rar

;D thanks again for the replys thats the main reason why im making this :)
Is it just me, or are you 46% of the time throwing in random percentages in 63% of your posts?

Please do not double post.

As for more advice, so far you have shown very little of your game. You should focus more on the gameplay aspects of your game as opposed to fancy backgrounds and graphics.
if you play you will see that i havent..... the graphics may look ok to you but thats just because im good at using Fireworks those pics below took mins to make.... if anythink ive spent most of my time on the events.... and scripting...

There are a lot of games on the site you can play. Click the Games link at the top of the page.
I played up until my computer inexplicably rebooted in the middle of the game. It occurred around reading a bulletin board about not bothering the animals. Not sure if that was the game or my computer.

Are these voice samples ripped from some place? The contrast between the voiced dialogue and the text dialogue is pretty drastic. No offense Donline, but you don't put a whole lot of effort into writing. The ingame text reads a lot like your forum posts and that's pretty unpolished.

The whole scene with reviving the girl was REALLY sluggish and didn't really tell me anything I didn't guess instantly. The whole face set and text bubble system looks pretty groovy, but it feels like it's wasted if the dialogue is garbled and awkward to sit through.

The custom menus are nice visually. Pretty sluggish, slightly gaudy, but pretty keen all the same. You make use of some nice scripts. I hadn't seen the shadow script in action before but it looks fairly keen here. Caterpillar systems almost always look cool.

The mapsets look pretty alright. The use of a panorama in the revive-the-girl scene looks really out of place, though. There are some misplaced tiles on some of the maps, particularly the waterfall area.

And, uh. Why are there Dragon Ball Z voice clips in your audio folder? I can't imagine you using these in the game. Stuff like this really only takes up file space if it's not relevant to the game content.
