HRM...SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR AN RPG.

Well, I'm in sort of a pickle here, people. I may need some suggestions from you all, as I do not really know of alot of RPG's outside of FF/DQ (Yes, it's pretty bad in a way, but still..) Anyway, on to the point!

Me and my friend have decided to pick up a game and start it at the same time. What is the point of this? We don't know yet. Ha ha. We will get to that later. However, it's the game it's self we are having trouble finding. He is not the BIGGEST fan of RPG's, but he still likes them (has played FF X, some DQ 8, Kingdom Hearts, and...I think that is it.)

Now...I'm trying to find a game that is not all that long, is an RPG for the SNES, and is fun to play with a bit of difficulty, yet not so difficult it makes you frustrated. Something in the 30-40 Hour range is a no-no for us. Any suggestions?
I notice a distinct lack of Chrono Trigger mentioned, so play that. There's no point that's really difficult and it isn't some game that involves hours of grinding to move on. You should be able to beat the game in less than 20 hours without a problem. (I don't remember how long it took me to finish the game last time I played though)

The problem with playtime is that it depends on how you play and your familiarity with the game. Take Chrono Trigger for example--these days I could probably finish the whole thing in twenty hours max, but back in the day when I first played it, not as familiar with the conventions of RPGs and not knowing where things were, it was a much more epic proposition.

At any rate, there's a pretty big range of RPGs to choose from. Some more specific criteria might be helpful. Most importantly, do you want something where you have time to decide what you want to do, or something more action-y? There's a big difference between Earthbound and Terranigma, for examplem even though they're both great games. (They're both probably more difficult and long than you'd like though)
Chrono Trigger, eh? Well, I already finished it, but he never played it before, so I might bring it up. I wouldn't mind replaying it again, as it was a great game. Kind of slow loading times, though, because I played the PS version.

And...I don't really think it would matter. As long as it was faily short (but not TOO short), and was somewhat of an RPG. I would not mind playing an Action RPG or the like. Oh! And it would be nice if it was not too non-linear.

Any RPG's on the SNES that have a fairlry fleshed out story with stuff you could think about, etc? He likes anime like FMA, Serial Experiments Lain, Ergo Proxy, etc. (Or things that require a bit of thinking, basically) So maybe something with a bit of a good story would help, too. Yeah, I might be getting a tad TOO specific, but it might help in some way.

As of now I have Chrono Trigger. Any more?

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 are good. SD3 is pretty long though.
E.V.O. maybe? it's kind of platform-y though.
How about Earthbound?

It's an SNES traditional RPG, of medium length. It's set in modern times. It has a kid with psychic powers and a baseball bat facing down apocalyptic alien forces. It is also very strange, and very funny.

The story itself is pretty simple--four kids must travel to eight Sanctuaries and defeat an evil alien named Giygas--but on the way, you get to do some pretty crazy things, like:

-Take on the entire Onnett Police Force
-Get your souls implanted into robots so you can go back in time
-Fight an evil cult that is obsessed with the color blue
-Travel around in a Yellow Submarine
-and more!

I would second Secret of Mana for no other reason than the fact that you and your friend can play it simultaneously. Co-op RPGs for the win!
Earthbound? Well, I've played that, too, and I don't really think he would like to play through it. It just does not seem to be his kind of an RPG. Maybe it is, I don't really know.

I don't really care what we play, so that is why I'm trying to find one that might have him interested. So far, I would say:

Chrono Trigger.
Terranigma.

I may take Earthbound into consideration, too. I just have to think about it a tad bit first.
Phantasy Star 4. For the Genesis though, sorry!
I'm kind of disappointed... There's an entire lacking of "Breath of Fire" in this topic. Breath of Fire I and II are EPIC. At least on par with the FF's on the SNES -- both being better, I think, than FFV.

Chrono Trigger isn't bad -- it's pretty entertaining. Decent storyline. Less battles than most RPGs, and very reminiscent of the FF/DQ series.

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 (SoM 2) are good for action -- as is Terranigma. In all honesty, you could probably even toss Legend of Zelda into this list. That was a good game, but less... immersing than most other RPGs.

Illusion of Gaia (made by the same people who did Terranigma) is also a GREAT game.

Earthbound is interesting, but when I played it, I had like 30 hours and I don't think I was even a quarter of the way through the game. It was kind of confusing, but then again, this is like... 10 years ago. I've heard a lot of great things about it too, but it might be kind of long.

But seriously -- Breath of Fire I/II are great games. The first is a little longer than the second, I think, and the battle system is nicer, imo.
I never got into BoF, even though I played into it a fair amount. It never clicked with me.

I fourth Secret of Mana.
BoF didn't really come into its own until it hit Playstation, if you ask me. III, IV, and Dragon Quarter are miles ahead of the first two.
Well then, I shall announce that we have decided to pick up Chrono Trigger. He looked it up, and he said it looked interesting...so we went with that! Ha ha. It's that simple!

Thank you for the input, everyone! Glad you all tried to put in something.

I back Terranigma -- the learning curve for that game is really good, too, so you don't have to grind.
Except for Bloody Mary. Oh god except for Bloody Mary.

Pfft, you just get those magic rings.
I'll back BoF II and Terranigma in this. And agree about Bloody 'bitch flies and fries me' Mary.

Though Secret of Man, Illusion of Time and Chrono Trigger are all great games too.
Chrono Trigger or FF6. I like neither of them, but SNES has so many shitty RPGs, that these are the only standouts.

*Braces for inevitable outburst*
