Attention all musicians!

Do you like to play video game music? Do you have interest in making music for video games?

I say we should pool our talents and have some fun with it. We can do covers and remixs of classic video game tunes. We can do covers of custom midi tunes for someones RPGmaker game. Hell, we could do some Rush or Metallica xD I'm just throwing it out there for anyone who is interested and talented enough to "jam" with the group.

I'm talking real instruments here, not laying dots down on music software. I know there are a couple others who play. I play bass guitar, been playing for about 12 years now. I also have a classical guitar, but I only have a few years on that and I'm kinda bad with chords :/ I just recently bought a rad new bass and rockin' amp so I play much more often now. I jam with my brother and some friends and it's a lot of fun, but they aren't into the whole video game music scene. So I turn to you, fellow gamers, for some possible good times.

You don't have to be a rock star to join. Even if you are just a beginner, you can join to learn and have fun. Ultimately though I'm looking for other skilled musicians to do actual recordings. I like to learn video game songs and beef them up. Here's an example:

http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/users/9179/locker/_garudovally.mp3 *bah, why does the mp3 tag ruin the formatting of this post

Disclaimer: This isn't a song I practice, I was reading the tab and playing it for the first time as I recorded this. After a few bars I start to play around with it and find what works. There's some crap notes in there but this is the kind of thing I'm hoping to get going! There's a few other recordings in my locker, at the very end.

There's tons of great songs in the NES library that would sound absolutely epic played with real instruments, just listen to some OC Remix.

Obviously it wouldn't be a live band, we'd have to record tracks and merge them. I don't have recording equipment, but I know someone through my brother who does. I'm sure I could find a way to get some crisp recordings. That one up above was recorded with my phone. If anyone else wants to record a track on a shitty mic, that's fine too. I just think it's fun to do this kinda thing, and it would be even better to do it with like-minded individuals.

I'm really not sure what I expect out of this, but it's something I've been thinking of for a while so I'm throwing the idea out there.
theres no i in teamocil

at least not where youd think

Remember when I actually used to make games? Me neither.

Eh, I have been playing the bass for a year, but I seriously have no idea how I would record my shitty basslines.
I can record with the piano of a friend, since I have one in my house but no recording software, and I don't think guitar pro midis are what you are looking for XD. But I am in ;)
@Nightowl - What kind of music do you(try and)play? heh I remember when I started out, I was awful.

@MrChearlie - How long have you been playing? Yeah, making digital arrangements isn't as cool as the real thing. I prefer to improvise as I play. Know any video game songs? Or Bohemian Rhapsody aha

I play Piano but i dont currently have one. I do hava a keyboard but no way to record it...
Just for the record, I play a bit of piano. I have one but I have no way of recording it. I also have a midi controller keyboard for the computer, so I can play live and record synthesized sounds live into a sequencer, which I suppose differs only from digital arrangement in that the input is live rather than clicked in. It's essentially the same thing to a listener as a recording or somebody playing a keyboard, though.

well I started at my 7 years by ear I played zelda ocarina of time songs with one finger and after the years I started to improve with my hands, at one point I let the songs and just start improvising all the time, I sit in my piano and play an hour daily of improvisation, so really don't know to many (original) songs and the ones that now I know are from memory and not exactly, they are more arrangement since I don't know the original notes(normally touhou songs), almost 3 years ago I started taking piano classes and I really get better, so in total, 8 years by myself and almost 3 with proffesor

also my friend recording is just like NewBlack (but I think there is no so much problem about sound)

thats all I can say.
Yeah, getting recordings isn't easy. Mixer boards are expensive and not something a casual player will want to buy. Buying some shitty 10$ is often good enough. If anyone does record I suggest playing along with the music, as opposed to not listening to anything. Or use a metronome or something, to make sure your timing is uniform throughout.

@NewBlack - Yeah, it's no different to the listener but I would prefer someone using their hands in realtime to make the music. As opposed to pre-rendered stuff that can be tweaked here and there. Live is what I want. If you have means to produce this, then that's ok. Obviously I can't tell whether you made it live or not, but I mean..I'll trust that you did. So does that mean you're interested? Or are you just stating that you play?

@MrChearlie - Cool, so you have some official training? That's more than I have haha I have no technical knowledge. All by ear and from tabs. Well record something, anything!, so I can get an idea. Doesn't have to be anything "cool" or anything; improvising would show your skill and a cover song would show your timing.

When I get some time I'll do some more basic recordings that anyone can record their own track to go along with.

I don't play any specific genre, I play the songs my teacher assigns me and sometimes when I listen to a good song (mostly rock or metal) I look for notes or tabs.
I can read notation now and I take bass lessons at the moment.

Oh and I can improvise basslines a little bit.
I might be interested! What I meant is, playing the midi controller keyboard live into a sequencer is the same as playing a standalone keyboard live rather than saying sequenced tracks are indistinguishable from those played live (in many cases they're easily distinguishable).

I posted this before elsewhere but this is a short example of something played live, on a midi keyboard, into software (rather than sequenced):

Stay "Cover"

aaand, this, which is kinda crappy but meh:

"Please, please, please let me get what I want this time".
I might had said this when I played novella, but I love your piano melodies NewBlack. the second one is not crappy but simple(more like you wanted to compose something in a rush, but still not crappy)
Smiths is not a bad choice, but if a bunch of gamers are gonna get together and do covers, they have to do covers of Rush. It's a rule.

"It's Saturday night. I've got no date, a 2-liter bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush mix tape. Let's rock!"

Yeah, we're on the same page on this subject :P

Awesome dude! What band wrote that song Stay? Never heard it before, no surprise there. Is that second piece your original work?

This is just a leisurely thing, no deadlines or anything. No commitment required. All you need is an interest. Then sometime when your farting around on your instrument, record a track and post it. Anyone can take that track and record their own separate track to go along with it then post it, and hopefully, eventually, songs get formed xD
@MrChearlie - Cheers man :) I appreciate it.

@flowertheir - But I don't know any Rush D:

@Link_2112 - :>

Stay is an old track by Shakespeare's Sister, my piano rendition is only a part of the song: Stay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eXw47qb4U0

Annnd the second track is a partial rendition of a song by The Smiths (who incidentally enough also wrote a song called "Shakespeare's Sister" which is where the former act got their name o_o). Please, please, please let me get what I want - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMQbzLrvwlE

I think the original is in a different key though. Not that that matters too much or anything.

Well, I'm about and like to noodle on the piano/keyboard often enough so we'll see where this goes :)

Rush's new song is quite good! Vocals and melodies aren't top-tier, but the music is outstanding.

Im currently learning Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts... Awesome song.
I will have to look into recording stuff, since this seems like fun.
I... really want to record something an put it here, I think I will use my crappy cellphone microphone for this time.

Well Link, what have you though? what is da plan?
Oh, what I said up above is pretty much "the plan"

On my phone it records audio is some funky Windows Mobile format(lame) so I just record video as mp4 and convert to mp3.

Whenever you post a piece; please indicate if it's original or a cover. If it's a cover say what it's from.

I'll probably update the OP with these guidelines at some point. I work nights and pretty much never have time to play bass or spend time on this during the week. Weekends is when most things will happen on my end.
Pretty awesome idea, Link. Makes me wish I could actually play an instrument.

For a lot of you, there should be a relatively cheap/easy way to record from your keyboards. Most keyboards have a headphone jack, and just about all computers have a line-in for microphones. If you go to Radio Shack and buy a stereo 3.5mm cable (it looks like a headphone jack on both ends) for a few bucks you can plug one right into the other, set your computer's recording device to Line-In, and voila; use Audacity or Sound Recorder to make some easy recordings. You may also need to buy a quarter inch adapter for the cable if your keyboard's output is that large.

This is an example of such a cable: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12475706&retainProdsInSession=1

I can't play, but I have plenty of stuff to engineer mixes with (or I can record your stuff in you live in the Seattle area). Catch me anytime on AIM if you want: plainoldsean.
