The Envelope: An Improvised Live Text Adventure

Update History:

- Rules created 05/07/2008.
- Rules modified 05/08/08: Multiple actions per round are encouraged.
- Rules modified 05/22/08: Number of actions per week adjusted.

The Envelope is an improvised live text adventure that I will make up as I go along. It is inspired by something I heard on the Joystiq podcast as well as by NoblemanNick's Paranormal Adventure thread at RM network. The format is exactly like an old school text-adventure; I supply a scenario, you post an action and a target, and I supply a result, to which you react with an action and a target.

The Envelope: Example

Game: There is a door in front of you.

Player: Kick door

Game: You kick the door and break your foot.

Player: Curse Self

Game You berate yourself for being foolish enough to try to kick a door down without shoes on.

(etc.)

The Envelope: Rules

- It functions exactly like a text adventure but I make it up as I go along.

- First reply is probably the action that gets taken, unless I arbitrarily overrule it. I will overrule the action if the first poster is someone who has been hogging the game, if the majority consensus is that some other action should be taken, or if I just decide that the action is stupid. This is not a democratic process.

- If multiple actions are suggested, multiple actions might be executed simultaneously. This can occur if the actions are compatible with each other and do not affect one another. For example, a search of an area can be executed in the same round as interacting with a known object in the area. However, it is not possible to jump down a hole in the same turn as it is to jump over the same hole.

- I encourage you to suggest an action even if someone else has already suggested one! It is possible that both actions might be taken, and it is also possible that your action will be preferred. The worst thing that can happen is that you might have typed two or three words that ended up being disregarded.

- I will update on average at least every other day (or three posts per week). I had originally planned on updating more often, but it ususally takes a day or two to get enough replies that I feel everyone who had *wanted* to participate has had a chance to.

- You are encouraged to perform ridiculous stuff to keep the game interesting. This is not a real text adventure but one written as we go along, and therefore I can create responses to even the most ridiculous scenarios.

- I stole this idea from the Joystiq podcast and from NoblemanNick.

- Please follow the procedure. Refer to the example above if you are unsure. You should only need to post two or three words (an action, and a target). However, feel free to make a full post commenting on the state of the game or protesting a specific result with which you are unhappy.

- This is an official RMN Network community activity brought to you by RMN staff.

You are standing in a small, empty room with no idea where you are or how you arrived. You are holding a standard, unmarked, letter-sized envelope. By the light of a bare lightbult hanging from the ceiling, you note that the room is conspicuously plain: its wood floors are pitted and stained but not ruined, its whitewashed walls are not clean but also not particularly filthy, and there are no windows. The only noteworthy feature in the room is its door, which is directly in front of you.

You have no idea which direction you are facing.
Slide envelope under the door.

You slide the envelope under the door. A quiet wiiiish pierces through the oppressive silence as the envelope glides roughly across an unswept floor. You are now no longer holding an envelope.

You are still standing in the small, empty room.

Search the room for valuable items.

A thorough search of the empty room reveals that it is, in fact, an empty room. After the fruitless investigation is complete, you go to open the door. It sticks a bit, but relents after some negotiation. You give the door an assertive shove, its stubborn hinges creaking and howling, and finally, the door swings open, revealing the world on the other side: a small, empty room.

The second room is identical to the first, with worn wooden floors and yellowing whitewashed walls. Also like the first room, there are no windows, and only one door - the one you have just opened. The second room might be called a mirror image if not for the fact that there really are no features which would be mirrored.

On floor in front of you is a plain, unmarked envelope.

Kick the walls.

You tear open the envelope and peer inside - to discover that the envelope is empty.

Perhaps out of frustration, you feel compelled to kick the wall to your immediate right. You use tremendous force, causing the wall to erupt into a shower of plaster, splinters, and, curiously, blinding light. The approximately man-sized hole that you have created is radiating a staggeringly bright light. You cannot see what is on the other side. A cool draft of decidedly fresh air meanders in from the other side of the hole.

Unfortunately, you have injured your foot. You reason that it is probably not broken.

You are holding an empty envelope.

Feels a sense of anxiety about the hole because it may lead you down a chute.

Inspects the rickety wooden floor planks to see if there are any secret contraptions.
examines the hole, then makes hole bigger then gets inside. Only to discover that it is the same room with the same envelope on the floor!

Check the floorboards first. (I'm with Veridianne)

A thorough search of the floor reveals that, as you had discovered only moments earlier, there is, in fact, nothing hidden in the room.

You climb through the hole in the wall. Dropping a short distance, your feet land on something soft. While your eyes are still trying to cope with the oppressive brightness, your other senses are wholly intact: You feel a cool breeze brushing against your skin, hear the far-off harmonies of many breeds of songbird, and smell the dulcet fragrance of wildflowers. The air tastes cool and crisp, but is not cold.

Once your eyes finish adjusting, you observe that you are standing in a prairie. It is a picturesque summer day in early summer day and the cool ground feels pleasant under your feet. The prairie extends literally as far as you can see. The grass is golden-green, flecked by specks of color and the occasional tree. Each tree houses several songbirds, all of whom are singing their chosen song, in their chosen key, and at their own chosen tempo. All of the plant life looks extremely healthy and in full bloom.

Behind you is the exterior wall of a medium-sized three-story building. It is plain and ancient-looking, but there are no windows or doors that you can see on this side of the structure. On ground level and immediately in front of you is an approximately man-sized hole in the wall; presumably, it was created when somebody kicked it in.

Based on the location of the sun: you guess that it is midday. You are either on the east or west side of the building. You are holding a plain, unmarked, empty envelope.
Walk around the house, inspecting it and the area around it!

I'm bringing this world back for you and for me.

Brandonably, I congratulate you on the success of this so far and I am happy that you gave some partial credit to me, it justs makes me happy inside and also you've drove me to start updating Paranormal Adventures once more!

Also Call for anyone that might be in the house
6.

"Hello?" You call out. Outside of the singing of songbirds and the swish of swaying grass, there is no response. You call out a second time, slightly louder:

"Hello? Anyone?"

"Is there anybody here?!"

Still, nothing. You decide that it would be fruitless to continue shouting. You move to search the building and its environs.

Your search reveals that the building is square and has no windows on any of its sides. Its walls are made of chipped and weathered stucco. There are no sheds or support infrastructure -- just a single, unmarked, lonely building in the center of a vast prairie. The prairie sprawls in all directions over what seems to be a truly infinite acreage.

The structure's only indentifying mark is a door on its north face, which presumably serves as an entrance. The door is small, sturdy, and unassuming. It does not have a window, and its brass knob has long lost its polish. Though the door has been dented and worn through years of regular use, its heavy stain has kept it dark and secure. Leading up to this door is a narrow dirt road.

The dirt road stretches from the entrance of the building to the distant horizon in an unusually straight line. Unlike the building it leads to, the dirt road is in good shape; the cruelties of natural weathering and vehicle rutting have been regularly attended to. Nontheless, it is still a dirt road.

Based on the location of the sun, you guess that it is midday and that you are on the north side of the building. You are holding a plain, unmarked, empty envelope.
