It was on an emulator, but I totally played both FF5 and FF6 to death. FF4 didn't really hit any notes for me whatsoever. I enjoyed the PS1 era titles well enough. FF10 is probably my overall favorite, though. Not that I'm hating on FF12. I explored quite a bit of that game when I first played it. I swear, I dropped over 120 hours into that first play, and I know I've revisited it at least once since.
I got stuck in FF5 (playing on an emulator on my phone), and I keep forgetting to look up a walkthrough to find out what step I missed. And now I have to go home, so I won't look now, and I will forget tomorrow!

I liked FF5, but the hammy story and hackney plot devices bring it down for me. Also, they give you all these cool battle commands and skills, but you only get to use 1 of them at a time??! (plus whatever your current class has). Wasted potential for an interesting character/class system, imo!

You get 2 skills to choose from in normal class and 3 as a Mime.

True and untrue at the same time. Certain skills (Counter, Cover, 2-Sword, etc.) are applied automatically to the character. Therefore, the player is encouraged to choose two skillsets (Magic, Guard, Steal, Etc.) and equipment that fit the character's role in the party. My endgame skills and equipment were as follows:

Bartz
Weapon1: Excalibur/Ragnarok Weapon2: Rune Axe
Armor: Genji Armor Helm: Ribbon Accesory: Wall Ring
Skills: Magic Sword, X-Fight
Using this setup, Bartz was able to do magnificent damage even without Magic Sword due to his Rune Axe, which uses MP to cause critical hits, coupled with his X-Fight ability. Using Magic Sword, he was able to cause extremely high damage with elemental enchantments that can instantly kill even bosses, insta-stat effects with each hit, or even heal himself (which is very useful while he is wearing the Wall Ring).

It's my own opinion that late game characters have the greatest flexibility and strategy next to characters from FFT. Of course, getting to that point has a lot of strategy as well, and offers lots of class/skill combinations.

If your insane like me, you can master every job and just go as a freelancer. Though you still only get to pick two active skills, all the passive skills are applied automatically. I'm not sure is this happens when you master a job or because your a freelancer, but all the stat boosts made my party rather ridiculous.

Granted, there's not much you can do after you get everyone to this point. Both Omega and Shinryu are cakewalks with the right strategy (seriously beat Omega in one round of jumps, by accident... he's super vulnerable to katanas).

Maybe I have a different version or someting, but I loaded it up in my emulator and I can only choose 1 ability, while the other one is fixed depending on class (for example, Butz is a normal Thief class and his job ability is set to !Steal. So I have !Steal and !BuildUp currently set for him).

When I pick the base class, I get to choose only 2 skills.
Oi. I feel bad because I've owned and played every title, and only beat F13, LOL. Oh, I am such a sell out.

My favorite would have to be FFVIII. My leg hairs tingle every time I think of Zell Dincht.

But seriously, as far as the game is concerned, I have always been mesmerized by the storyline. The awkward love... octagon with Squall, Rinoa, Seifer, and Edea (Ultimecia). The draw system! (I know a lot of people absolutely hated that, but I actually enjoyed it! I would waste hours maxing out spells).

Though I am more than sure I didn't validly state my claim as to why FFVIII is a good candidate for being the best FFVIII of all time, it just is.

2nd place would have to be FFX/FFX-2. Can I put emphasis on how much I LOVE FFX-2? Probably, no, definitely my favorite battle system out of all the final fantasy games, hands down, was the ATB gauge system in FFX-2. The fast paced command giving madness was simply fantastic, not to mention the use of dressspheres!

3rd would definitely have to be FF12.

..Now that I think about it, FF12 SHOULD be first in my pick, but it just... isn't...

It's my sister's favorite though!

Final Fantasy Tactics.

Best game ever.
I find it a bit sad that no one mentioned the ORIGINAL final fantasy 3 for t he NES (granted, you would have had to play it on an emulator.) It was WAY ahead of its time. It had a nice story for a early RPG, not to mentioned it was the first in the series to have a TRUE job system, which by the way there were ALOT of. The game was huge (hours wise) it compares to the SNES final fantasy games. It had a high difficulty, which I loved. It took me quite a while to beat the game.

Has anyone here actually played it?

Final Fantasy 3 all the way.

Dudesoft did play Final Fantasy III (probably DS only, though.)

And while I didn't play the original Final Fantasy III for the NES, I played Final Fantasy III in DS (yes, the one where Cloud of Darkness is the final boss), and I do enjoy it, just not as much as the rest as stated in my earlier post.

I am pretty sure the Final Fantasy III for DS has the exact gameplay and story as the one in the NES, including the infamous final dungeons in which you can't save at all.

no way, the one for the NES was way better. I really didnt like how they...changed it. Its hard to explain, you'd just have to play the NES version.

I played it. While FF3 was a little ahead of its time, I feel that it was eclipsed by FF5 in pretty much every regard since it did everything FF3 did but better.

I don't think I even have to answer this question...

but the obvious one is followed by IX, X-2, X, VII, XII, I (PSP remake).

I got so terribly lost in I...

With all do respect, did someone spike your kool aide with crack lol. I hated that game. I enjoyed the original gameboy final fantasys more then Mystic Quest.
Imo, FF7 catches the player from the very beginning, whereas it takes a little time for FF8 to be enjoynable. The first FF, for NES, is pretty fun, too, and I expect 2-6 to be, too.

Didn't like too much the PS2 ones, neither FF13, but they're still fun.

FF8 was awful. the characters were weird and hard to relate to. the story was boring. the only good thing out of that game was triple triad. the game mechanics were just plain terrible.

Also, FF10 was great.
Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of 8 at all, to be honest. It was OKAY, but that's about it. Just okay.

My favorites would have to be IV, V, and IX. I'm also fond of VII, but that's just because the game FEELS nice to me. And it's not even really nostalgia (or I wouldn't call it that), but I just think it has a nice feel. I like the lego-man graphics!

My first FF was IV, and that was before I even really knew what an RPG was. I remember renting the Collections (?) version (that comes with Chrono Trigger) and only ever getting to Octomammoth, because I didn't have a PS1 memory card... and he was a pretty difficult boss for me at the time! So out of all the FFs, that one gives me serious nostalgia.
