The Way of the Samuraiseries (specifically 1 and 3) is probably the best example of legitimately bad games (omfg don't get me started) that I love anyway (collecting swords (fighting styles) is so addictive that I will put up with what is essentially an All Star Team of bad game design ideas to do it, even if the games frequently cause me controller biting frustration).

I have played through them hundreds of times while fully aware they are terrible.

Believe me, I know what you're talking about. I love those games as well on the PSP but the stories are sometimes flawed and too short.

Totally agree, I just booted up the first one on a PS2 emulator last month and I've played through it 3 different ways already.

I would also add MASS EFFECT 2 to the list. Really horrid game that is only enjoyable because of the first game being so awesome.

Sorry, but in what possible universe is Mass Effect 2 at all a bad game?

Correct.

And in full anticipation of the next horrible WotS, 4 is coming out for release in the states this year apparently. I've heard you can switch stances with the same sword this time around. It's the little things. Can't wait.
I loved this xbox360 game called Deadly Premonition. It's like a B horror movie, terrible yet so approachable and hard to put down. Great story and atmosphere, giant Twin Peaks tribute. It's also a bargain title, so I totally recommend it!

Something Awful did a wonderful review of this game.
Apparently a world where it needs to be typed in all caps so we'll be sure to see it and get all riled up, lol.

I can maybe see some mechanical elements of Mass Effect 2 being criticized, but overall the game is pretty well renowned as excellent. So...yeah.

hahahaha what
Let me add Space Griffon VF9.

Anyone remember that game?
Gotta love deadly premonition, and that let's play is just as good as the game is.

Way of the Samurai was, I thought, an interesting concept, even if the games themselves were a little bit lacking. When you play it over and over again, it kind of turns into groundhog day with swords, and it makes me wish it had a majora's mask style time-traveling mechanic in it.

My personal favorite bad game was a DS title I played in Japan called Bokura Wa Kaseki Horuda (literally "We Are Fossil Holders!" Changed to "Fossil Fighters" in the states.)

Basically, its plot goes something like this: you are either a boy or a girl, and you go on vacation with your uncle Dr. Grant to an island where people chisel dino bones out of fossils and then use them to fight pokemon battles with. There are gyms and battles and some friggin' weird luchadores, but the core mechanic revolves around using the DS stylus to delicately chisel out fossils, cutting away the excess rock within a set time limit so as to extract as much DNA from them as possible. The better you archaeologize your fossil, the stronger the dino parts inside will be when you make them fight with other people's parts.

Over the course of the game, you meet a ghost pirate, discover the ancient race of dinosaurians, rescue a fire-breathing ultrasaurus from an erupting volcano, travel into space, get frozen in carbonite, teleport back to the past, and make out with a hot older woman who is also a dinosaur.

If you would like to see this madness for yourself, here you go.

- A story that went absolutely nowhere
- Characters cloned from the first game
- Some major gameplay problems, especially on pc
- AWFUL mining system, horribly boring and made worse by the fact that it's required
- Reduced RPG elements. I can't stress this enough.
- Leveling/Exp system was the worst I've ever experienced.
- Terrible, linear map design.
- Citadel was boring and small.

I could really go on, as I typed that all in like 1 minute. But I won't, it was definitely a major disappointment to me personally, regardless of how many COD lovers thought it was an improvement.

Perhaps we should separate "disappointment" and "bad game"?

For all your complaints, it's still a much much better game than some of the other ones mentioned. Like Deadly Premonition, my god.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more (well, perhaps not on the mining.) Love Mass Effect 2 and I am by no means a "COD lover." I thought the characters were more interesting in that game and while the story is admittedly a bit on the skimpy side ("Look some bad guys, let's prepare and go kill them") it still had me gripped thanks to the abundance of excellent personal moments between characters.

Just a matter of taste I suppose.

Fair argument. Despite my gripes, let's not forget I still admittedly loved it, even if I think it's a bad game.

See, here's the thing. I LOVE Suikoden III a lot, but I shouldn't because it's quite repetitive and has poor dungeons. But the story and the scale of the game won me over. Great stuff! The trinity sight system is brilliant; the story was what allowed me to overlook the insane amount of backtracking.
Robot Wars Arenas of Destruction was my favorite abomination back in the early noughties. Also has the honour of being my first PS2 game... YAY! The ability to build your own robot was a revelation to me at the time, however chunky controls and the flimsy graphics really held it down back then.

Lost Kingdoms 2 and gotcha force... Lol.

Really non-existent plots, but I played lost kingdoms 2 either 9 or 11 times... I forget, maybe 12. XD For gotcha force, 9 or 8.

History Channel: Civil War - A Nation Divided
I really have hard time wondering why do I even play this.
Probably because it's the only Civil War themed FPS.

I've also consistently been disappointed by crap civil war fps. By far the best one (although the rest of the game is only so-so) is Darkest of Days. You time travel through five eras (indian wars, civil war, first world war, second world war and Pompey). The Civil War levels are the best, with you taking part in famous scenes like the cornfield at Antietam. And as well as civil war-era weapons, you later get modern assault rifles to kill rebels with ^_^

It's only $20 on steam.

I should stop giving Unlimited Saga a chance, but it's music is so charming and warm, while the game itself does everything it can to keep you from playing.

Yoda Stories for the PC, a fun "free roam" type star wars game, no one besides me and my brothers played it at the time.
Didn't know people beyond the internet that liked it. I used to waste hours as a kid on there.
I couldn't get into Yoda Stories, but I did play Indiana Jones Desktop Adventures which was basically the same exact game, just with a different license.
