UNDER-RATED GAMES PEOPLE SHOULD PLAY

God Hand is pretty much the king of underrated games. It did more for it's own genre than any other Double Dragon clone and is actually good. Camera controls and movement feel so awkward at first but in the later levels it feels like breathing, and punching the shit out of someone is just so satisfying. I also love how ape shit the cutscenes get.

Idk about the other games mentioned in this thread, they all seem highly rated to me... i see underrated as bad reviews and usually having a cult following or personal appeal. Unknown games with good reviews just seem like "hidden gems"

While that is a nice picture of what I presume to be cavestory or something similar, that doesn't answer my question.

......

RPG Maker games are, in general, indie games, for your info. (Probably not the ~~indie~~, though, unless...)
Okay, NOW I get what it means. Indie games that don't do a thing different from predecessors and are carbon copies of slightly more popular games anyway.

Now to convince my friend to get me Space Channel 5 Part 2 from Steam (being broke sucks).

One excellent game I think is vastly underrated is Mirror's Edge.

I played the demo for that game. Trust me, if I hadn't sold my PS3, I'd have played the ins and outs of that thing. I loved the fluidity of the controls. It reminded me of Assassin's Creed, but without the annoying musicians and poor people that you want to kill.

Also, I never noticed until now just how many games are on steam. I don't have steam (though I had it for a small portion of time), so I may just need to download it to see what I am missing out on.

@Darken - Everyone has a different interpretation of various things. My definition of under-rated are games that are great, but aren't widely known by the general public (or so we would like to believe).

@MKID - SC5 Part 2 absolutely KILLED me with the singing. Not in a good way either.

I really loved this game for the gameplay. The story was a touch on the cheese side, but I like some cheese in my games. This may go in the Bad Games you love anyway thread though, there's quite a bit of hate for this game mainly because levelling was really slow.

I didn't know there was a real game called God Hand, but there I was game, that I was working on which had the same name, properly the same plot too. :p Cancelled lol. But I might end up coming back to with a new name sometime.
Well, for under-rated games, you should try Growlanser.
I mean, ANY growlanser game in the series. To me, it was fun as hell.
And sure was a enjoyable JRPG to play, too.

You just answered it here. Attack of the indie clone wars, gogogogo.

Oh so by ~~indie~~ games you mean "mainstream" indie games. Like you're hipster and crap, and all the successful indie games are unimaginative and boring. Because they're ~~popular~~ and they got great ~~reviews~~ and the critics ~~adore~~ them.

But srsly. Don't diss Braid, you probably ain't even played it.

Anyway, Tombi! 2 was a game I enjoyed as a kid. Not sure if it's under-rated as such, but I literally spent hours just collecting and cooking meat to sell to nearby traders. It was fun for me, somehow. The game was hilarious, and deep with some great minigames.

Not what I meant at all.

I mean games that rape the low-res aesthetic, are about WHERE AM I... WHAT IS THIS... WHAT IS LIFE... WHAT IS DEATH..., and are just basic platformers + a gimmick. Even if they're "good" doesn't mean that they're not stale as a whole.

The best example ever is a parody in Upgrade Complete 2. You can unlock Indie Mode, and it is fabulously hilarious. Play it/unlock it now.
Oh yeah I remember I read your review of Wither some time back. Didn't like it. But oh well, your opinions are your opinions. I must say though that I like when games' primary purpose isn't just to entertain you, or to make you have "fun". For example, Counter-Strike isn't particularly fun, it's brutal and hard and difficult. But the reason why you play comes because you anticipate the feeling of success, but can't quite reach it. And that's what I think ~~indie~~ games are playing on but aren't quite reaching. Metaphors are good and all, combined with beautiful art, but each element has to have its meaning to the whole piece, like a well-formed work of art or an orchestra of music. That's what ~~indie~~ games (as you have described) try to work on, is a fully complete and artistic experience.
Oni.

It's one of my favorite games of all time. It partly inspires my current game that I'm developing. I love this game to death. Ever since I got it for PS2. Now I have it for PC since my PS3 replaced the PS2. :P

Project Sylpheed is a space shooter that got low scores from critics (6.4 average) but high marks from players (8.7 average). I thought it was a lot of fun.

I will always be a firm supporter of FF: Mystic Quest, as many of you already know

NIER was savaged by critics when it was released for presumably being "generic," a "God of War clone" and "unfun." That's really too bad because it also happened to be the best mediation on videogame violence since Shadow of the Colossus, not to mention one of the saddest games ever made. Also it had rideable boars that you could drift on, and an absolutely phenomenal soundtrack.

Otherwise, Anachronox is pretty great. It's like a JRPG except with Western influences and absolutely hilarious writing. One of your party members is a planet shrunk down to miniature size.

I've also heard fantastic things about Bangai-O Spirits, but I was never able to get into the thing myself.

Oh Nier, one of the best stories in a game ever (for me at least). I still listen to the soundtrack, a masterpiece :D And yeah, such a sad game (especially some of the endings, watched them all on youtube, and damn...)

And don't forget the epic boss-fights!

I had literally never heard of Nier until just now. It sounds interesting.

I'm going to take up my usual post and recommend Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars to everyone on this forum.

At the surface, it's a typical jRPG story with lackluster gameplay, but the pacing, character interactions and incredible OST are second to none in my opinion.

I think this is pretty good representation of the excellent dialogue:

The beginning of the video contains ~~amnesiac girl~~ done right (probably one of the few instances I prefer a character BEFORE they've regained their memories; Myona is seriously badass up until that point), while at around 5:15 begins probably one of my favourite pieces of dialogue between antagonists ever.

ZoE:ToM has had a profound effect on my life ever since I first played it way back in 2003. If it wasn't for this game I'd probably be another one of those FPS weirdos who listens to Linkin Park; needless to say I wouldn't be anywhere near RMN.

Fist of Mars deserves to be played simply for being the only strategy RPG I have ever played where you will always hit your target 100 percent of the time and your enemy will miss 100 percent of the time.

Ever tried it without IAS? Absolute nightmare.
THIS GAME:

THIS FREAKING GAME GAIS.
I got this game when I was in elementary school, and I LOVED it. It is kinda like a tactical-rpg/pokemon game. How it works is you get blank dolls, and then imbue them with crystals to change them into actual monsters. By using different combinations of gems on monsters you can "evolve" them into stronger monsters, but the kicker is that you aren't given any of these combinations; it is all trial and error. Once you get to nearly max tier, you have to find the right combination of 4 or 5 gems the get that last bit, but oh god, the feeling of getting it right and getting those uber beasts in like nothing else. I actually traded my copy of the game for someone's gameboy advance, back when those were a big thing. (and then I went out and bought another copy ^w^)
