Somebody might've used an item or ability to protect nessy, hell it could've even been an enemy just to cast questions over her. Then again that would've been a really tricky ruse this early in the game considering the odds of someone picking nessy for something.
Honestly, mirrors death will solve all our questions. I don't know what is so hard to understand about that given the evidence.
