INVISIBLE WALLS (XP)

So I'm trying to make some invisible walls to seal off areas of my map. I've been using blank events to do this but didn't realize until after the fact that adding all these events would slow my game town tremendously.

That said I'm wondering if there might some alternative way to make invisible boundaries.
I haven't worked in XP, but I would think you would be able to make a blank tile in your Tileset and then mark it with an X under the passability editor.
