DOES LONGEVITY OF A GAME REALLY MATTER?
Posts
Sorry, this has been bothering me for such a long time now I had to post it.
Many of my game, and others, are disregarded or called bad for just not being 200+ hours long. I tink some of the best game made are 5-20 hours, and to be honest, my favorite games are 5-10ish hours myself.
I don't think length really matters, it does not make the gameplay or story better, especially if it's bad, and really the way I see it longer=more danger.
Longer games can make the game feel dull, fell repeitive, but this is a common thing among rpg developers. Even resulting to tedious filler to reach some set time goal of play time.
My games were even criticized for this (not here though every single thing I sent here was denied lol.) there are even some situations, where a person would actually put the play time in the description and people would claim garbage before playing. But honestly does every game have to be Skyrim?

What is the point of this thread, I mean I understand what the topic is about, but this sounds like more of an excuse to complain about your games.
It's not the length it's how you use it.
Also length does matter. If a game is too long I'll just skip it because long games take too much time from other, shorter, better games.

I have no game on here because of map design, not length, so i could see why you think that but it's not the case.

This is in general. The general though of a person, form what I have seen though, is that length of less than 50+ or so hours is not considered a real game. Does not apply to everyone.

Well that's what I was saying, my thread was probably worded wrong I should have stated longer game speifically.
Edit: But I can't edit the title so...

Direct these people to MMORPGs or Facebook games and ignore them. Personally I'd rather have a focused game with minimal padding which is where those 200+ hour games get their

iirc the OP can edit thread titles. Scroll past the reply box to Actions and I think there's an edit button that lets you change the thread title.

Yeah I see it.
I prefer 5-10 hour games, like you, maybe even less. Maybe it's because I have ADD and can't sit still for 200+ hours, but I just want to have a quickie that I can enjoy and love all the way through it.
So I was a little surprised to see a visit from chairmandrek shortly after I banned LegendaryCreator... so I did some digging.
Turns out that while I didn't find a connection to LC, I did find that chairmandrek has 8 alt accounts, several of which are banned for various reasons.
Alt accounts are forbidden, chairmandrek.

When you said "longevity", I thought it was something completely different.
I'll be frank, and I don't know how many people think like me, but not often I find myself in the mood for very long games. When I'm browsing RMN, I'm almost always looking for short games (2h max). If I see that a game is longer than that, it's an automatic no. Of course I agree with the "it's how you use it argument", but if I was to count the length of the game by itself, I'd say the shorter the better.

Still a valid topic, I think.
I know I tend to keep a couple, very long games on hand. Mons, Dissidia, various RPGs like Strange Journey or TWEWY. I derive a lot of entertainment in these games from progress, and discarding progress to go play something else irks me.
So, I like my games long. When I want a fix of something shorter, I usually look for it from another genre, like Fighting games.

Perhaps RMN needs a great user purge
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If I have been playing a game for 10 hours, and I still am having fun, I am going to want to keep playing. Of course, sometimes the developer simply isn't skilled enough to keep it fun any longer. Sometimes that's just as long as you're capable of making the game without it becoming repetitive and dull. I know; I've been there. But if you aren't out of ideas yet, why stop?
Also, I don't think I've ever played a single-player commercial game that was 5 hours long, unless it was designed to be played several times, or was a 99 cent ipod game. The shortest games in my library are probably the Phoenix Wright games, which took me about 15-20 hours each. And it's not like they stopped after 15-20 hours; they just split the game into five pieces and sold each one for full price.

The reason people laugh at 200+ is because it sounds unrealistic for an RM* game.
Might be just me though.
oh wait I misread the topic. People actually say that's bad for not being long enough? I thought it was more like you have a 15 minute demo how do you expect to showcase your game for being like that etc.

Disgaea wasn't still fun after 200 hours, but Call of Duty and World of Warcraft and Super Smash Bros. and Tetris and Skyrim and Vice City and SSX Tricky and Dance Dance Revolution and Madden and Diablo 2 and Starcraft and Civilization 3 were.
Disgaea "ends" after about 70 hours, anyway. After that it's just kind of like, "Well, that's really all we've got, but if you want to keep playing, here's a way to do so! Keep going for as long as you want."

COD, WoW, Super Smash Bros, SSX Tricky, starcraft - Mostly fun because it's multiplayer
Tetris - really really good game design
Skyrim, vice city, diablo ii - open world, tons of quests, really well-thought-out in general
Dance Dance Revolution, tetris - high scores and the social aspect
Civilization 3 - JUST ONE MORE TURN
