I have a super awesome navigation tool for you, bro. It's called the ~*NAVIGATION BAR*~ and it is located on the far right side of your screen.
Srsly, folks: not a thing to get your knickers in a twist about! Is annoying to you if you're not a participant? Yeah, maybe. But is the world ending around you because you are minorly inconvenienced? No.
Just...just get over it, okay? That's really all I can think to say: it's not a real problem, so get over it and move on with your life.
Sorry if I'm coming across as a dick; I'm just super tired of people whining about things that are absolutley of no consequence in the grand scheme of things. Just let people have their fun and keep makking gam.

Bah, I type so slow u.u .
TL;DR - See comment in red below.
See underlined quote below.
Not like mafia. I've been using the Latest Posts section for a while now and there hasn't been an ongoing topic filling up pages of Latest Posts on a regular basis. I can't even remember any one thing taking up a full page.
Has there ever been a conversation/comment thread anywhere on this site that filled 30 pages in about 24 hours? This is the key example of how excessive it has become lately.
This isn't like the whole crappy blogs discussion. That is about quality, this is about function. It has nothing to do with "RMN Rights & Freedoms".
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR? Just read this, then.
You can play forums games. Nobody is suggesting that all forum games should be removed because people are having too much fun and I don't like it! You all don't seem to be listening to what's being said. You see some resistance to your right to play mafia and the defenses are up. You're all focusing on the wrong things. You're counterpoints are "you can't ban forum games!" and "but we want to have fun, too!". Nobody is suggesting a change in those things. They've been going on without issue and will continue to go on. This is a very specific and recent issue in regards to the sheer amount of this one thing, mafia posts, that is disrupting my ability to see WHAT ELSE might be going on. It's not like the first mafia game popped up and here we are with the pointy sticks and molotov cocktails. It's been several months of constant mafia games that get bigger each time and now it's become so large that it's pushing other things out of the way. Where's the balance? Where's the moderation(small doses)? Is it really so out of line to ask you to at least tone it down? When something grows that large, it needs it's own space. This is why I think moving to a mafia forum is the best solution, not because I want to be in control of what you're allowed to do here. That's a load flim-flam.
I'm being vocal because a feature of this site that I use frequently is becoming useless because of the sheer number of mafia posts. Why am I not allowed to keep the things I use functional? Am I being over-zealous or are you being unreasonable?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an issue for me because one off-topic thing is ruining something for another on-topic thing. On-topic being something about game development.
My main argument is this:
This only affects the Latest Posts section.
It doesn't mean you're doing anything on purpose but it is having a negative impact on one little piece of RMN. I hardly think it's elitist to speak up when you are negatively affected by something. But if you make this a continuation of the blog debate, I can see how that might be true.
The idea of going to a mafia related site or taking breaks between games are attempts at compromise. Can't you at least consider them instead of brushing this off as "not a problem"? That's sometimes how disagreements go; one side doesn't think there is an issue and wants to continue doing whatever. It would be nice if a filter could leave that stuff out, that would work.
What do you lose from playing mafia NOT AS MUCH? Believe it or not, there is something to be gained from playing less.
Really? What's my bias again? :D I would like to know so I can avoid having it.
You mean the scroll box? :P In this case using it to simply ignore the mafia posts won't work because the Latest Posts section only shows so much.
I think it's only the mafia people and people deciding this isn't an issue that are knicker-twisted :)
Should we only discuss things if they could end the world?
Well, I'm tired of people who say this when an issue is brought up that they don't approve of. Should we all be discouraged to talk about something unless it is deemed by someone to be very important? It's so easy to take this stance because of the oppressive nature of that point of view. It's all too common now-a-days.
We're just talking, what part of this is making everyone else so uptight?
Also, in the grand scheme of things, nothing we do as human beings really matters haha
You know that old saying "just ignore it if you don't like it". Just like a bad screenshot, if you don't like this issue feel free to ignore it. Telling me it doesn't matter won't change anything on my end. You just look cool for having dissed me. (This paragraph is totally not directly at you, emmy ^.^)
At the end of the day it doesn't matter what happens. I think debating like this is fun, but most of the time people end up taking it personally because the internet makes them angry. I just hope you take into consideration the concerns of the other users who share this space. And please don't pick one thing I'm saying and take it to the extreme. Nobody is advocating a ban on fun :/
I wonder how many will actually read this whole thing~ Good for you, if you did.

So there are a lot of posts in one topic. It happens in other discussion topics too.

First it was "crappy blogs" now "forum mafia" next it will be no "General Discussion", then "No Forum Posts only quality games".

For the record, I agree that this issue is worth being discussed, but here's the thing: The "latest post" function, as is, does not work well even in the scenario where there are no mafia games as is evident from the picture Karsuman posted. Adjust this and all problems go away.

I assume you're referring to what you said about only needing to see when something is updated, not every single post. That's how forums work and it's not the ideal setup for everything.
The Latest Posts sections show all posts, that's why it's called Latest Posts and not What's New, or something. It's a raw stream of what is being posted on the site. That's precisely why I like that section and why I want to continue to be able to use it. It negates it's purpose if it does anything but show every single post. My brain has no problem making sense of multiple posts in the same thread. In fact, that is a clear indication of what is a "hot topic". There has never been a problem with so much activity that it becomes cluttered. It has always been a perfect balance, even with the occasional mafia game that has taken place in the past.
I'm not sure we're on the same page if you think Karsuman's picture says anything about the Latest Posts section. It looks to me like he was poking fun at Sailerius for saying there is too much posting from one thing when his Notice feed is all posts from Sailerius's game. I could be wrong.
But if a gamepage is being commented on, say, Vacant Sky, you will be able to tell this just from seeing "Vacant Sky New posts" and clicking on it and reading all the new posts. Having every single post listed is not necessary. You don't even need a bunch of lines of text to tell you if something is a hot topic because the amount of posts that you see on the page when you look at it will tell you that. You say that there's never been a problem with so much activity that it becomes cluttered, but look at the image karsuman posted. There are eighteen notifications about Vacant Sky: Contention and it is two people talking. A "hot topic" indeed.
I don't really care what Karsuman's intent with that picture was. It doesn't really matter because it is relevant to the point I am making.

I'm not going to go too far into this, because it's not actually part of this discussion. You're talking about providing less information, for what seems like the sake of organization. It's a not a large amount of data, anyways. It doesn't exactly need to be organized. Out of the few reasons that I wouldn't click on something, a couple come from knowing who posted what, and when. If I have to click into the topic just to find that out, I'm wasting my time. So not only do I have less data, but now I have less time.
I'm telling you that the biggest selling point(for me and maybe the others that use the section) is the fact that it's raw data and shows you in real time what is being talked about. I can decide for myself what looks interesting and what doesn't based on that data. I'll often click on something if I see that many people, or certain people, are posting there.
If you don't want to view the raw data, that's fine. But I do. So what you call "wrong" and "not working well" is exactly how I want it to be. It's quick-access, to everything, and it's conveniently all in one place.
It appears to me that you are calling your own preference of how data is displayed the right method and calling my preference wrong. They are different and work better for different situations. There doesn't need to be only one way. So let's just drop this whole tangent.
Shall I explain how Notices work? and then follow it up with ways in how it's not the same thing?
You're drifting away from the actual point here. You're focusing on something subjective that doesn't concern me and I'm not going to follow.

Link, you know you can troubleshoot this entire problem by subscribing, right? That way all the posts you want to see will be in your notifications.
You are right there's a problem here, though. I´m terribly sorry about my mafia game getting 30 pages in 48 hours, it was something none of us could have expected. Talking to an admin to try to get a filter might be the best way to proceed here, as it's quite obvious none of us mafia players want to adjust our ways. I think a compromise sadly isn't possible.

Of course a compromise is possible. However, mafia is declining at the moment so I don't even think it'll be necessary.
I brought up Heartache because the issue people have with that game is essentially the same with this issue: A group of individuals are making post after post, and it's annoying certain users. The difference with Heartache and mafia threads is group-size. True, at the height of Heartache's buzz, there was a diverse user-base paying attention to it, but there was a steady base of commentary from about four users. I think? I dunno. I'm not going through fifty pages worth of posts to find out. Anyway, mafia threads, like the one being run now, have more like fifteen people making post after post. So, yeah, same issue, as far as I'm concerned.
I hope you can see where I'm coming from now? If not, I guess you're free to ignore this post.

The Latest Post feed is feed that feeds the latest posts. It is performing exactly as advertised.
I am not going to break its functionality because there is currently a fad going on in one of the forums.

Heh; There are many things that don't bring about the apocalypse, yet we do something about them. Necro-posts come to mind. We lock those in a heartbeat! But we do it for a reason: Necro-posts push down and detract attention from legitimate current topics, among other issues. (Sounds familiar? xD) ...So you see? It's not about if something is a 'real problem' or not, is about no matter how small a problem may seem, to weight out its pros and cons and do what we can about it. Is.that.simple. xP
I don't have anything against Mafia threads per se, I actually think is the kind of forum game that can stimulate brain cells instead of killing them (Like those one-word-at-a-time threads). But Link is right about the "Latest Posts" section getting too clogged lately. Usually it's just spurs of one to three pages, (which already is a lot, imo) but yesterday it was like eight pages total! So, as much as I think is a pro for people to have their fun, the cons are starting to catch up... If it's true this was a one time deal and Mafia threads are actually declining then I guess we can all "wait and see", but if not, maybe we should start talking something out? <_>

I still don't plan on breaking Latest Posts, though.
I am in the brainstorming phase of a Notifications revamp/add-on, where you can "follow" things on RMN you want to be notified about posts on. So, you could follow an article, or event, or threads or something.
(that's about as far as I got).
(remember when you people wanted Latest Posts on the frontpage?)

@all the stuff Link said: I skimmed it -- still not really convinced it's an issue!
I guess it doesn't seem worthy of a two page discussion to me! It really is the kind of thing that's kind of a "deal with it" issue, ya know? The no shitty blogs rule totally warrants discussion, but this...? This is debating about changing a site function just because some people get annoyed at the latest post thing clogged up with stuff they don't personally care about. If you frame it like that (rather than as a forum game spam), it suddenly seems a bit more reasonable!
But yeah. I care not either way -- just wanted to chuck out a general "be cool gaiz" since wow long posts OTL

Right. It doesn't need to be changed. A filter wouldn't be a change, but even that isn't necessary to bring balance back to the force.

That's a neat idea, but it wouldn't resolve this issue. For me anyways.
I don't recall me ever wanting Latest Posts on the frontpage hah I think it would be a good idea to make the Latest Posts feed a little more accessable or advertised. It's a decent feature that hardly anybody, apparantly, knows exists.

*sigh* How would you feel if you were discussing something and the other participants didn't read your "long" posts? You've been in plenty of heated discussions with long winded posts. The reason for discussing is irrelevant.
Anyways, it looks longer than it really is because of multiple quotes, extra line breaks, and it's mostly one line paragraphs. If I didn't do that people would bitch about walls-o-text.
If you're not willing to actually read what I have to say, and then continue to say it's not an issue, don't bother getting involved. Please.
This is debating about changing a site function
It's actually not about that at all. This is the problem, some aren't actually listening to the issue and making up what they think it is. Which is usually a way of framing it in a ridiculous fashion, usually bringing it to the extreme.
But yeah. I care not either way -- just wanted to chuck out a general "be cool gaiz" since wow long posts OTL
Sorry, I couldn't find a way to get my points across with image macros. Had to use lots of words. But uh, we cool ;P
I know it might be hard to fathom, everybody, but there are people out there that might have a reason to care about something you don't. It's not your place to judge. If you don't think this is an issue, or think it's not worth discussing, I don't care. It has no effect on my opinion or desire to talk about it. M'kay?

Well... I am planning on running a tiny mafia game sometime after the current one finishes. So I guess I can check out this mafiascum.net and host it there after holding signups here (we still are an rmn comunity after all). It'd be a test of sorts, and if we like it I guess some of the games could be hosted there. I don't know how the other mafia players feel about this plan, or if I'll like the website at all, so I can't promise anything, but I guess it's worth a shot. I would first like to hear some opinions of my fellow mafia players on that plan, though.
If it's going to come to needing viable alternatives for mafia threads, maybe Quick Topic? I dunno. We've used the place for mafia-chat, so it seems like a small enough jump.

I remember the latest post section in the frontpage. I actually changed my bookmark from the frontpage to the 'Latest Post' feed just keep up this feature... I'd be cool if it made a return, but nowadays I wouldn't be happy with just the five entries the frontpage displayed. xP
Anyway, if by some art of magic it were possible to filter the content of the Latest post feed in a similar way Google does it, (Typing Mafia would show only Mafia posts, and typing -Mafia would omit all Mafia posts.) I wouldn't call that 'breaking' the functionality of the feed, but, uh, expanding it! -- Actually, something like that would be plenty useful if you think about it...

Frankly, I wouldn't like you guys going somewhere else. That would be like expecting Dudesoft to go somewhere else with his Battledome topics, (which I'm often a participant of) and that wouldn't be fair. ...However I do think is reasonable to tone things down a little.
By decline I meant there are quite a few people starting to get sick of mafia and getting bored with it. I'd guess that this current mafia and the vanilla mafia will be the last ones for a while
Edit: And the next mafia won't be quite as big page-wise or player wise. This really doesn't seem like something that needs to be bothered with, though it'll be better for everyone the next time a mafia thread pops up to wait a little before the next one. (Though there was a around a 2 week span of time between the current and last mafia games so it's not like there wasn't SOME cool-down.)
Also, I would find it preferable to not have to move anything elsewhere.
