COMPRESSION TECHNIQUES IN RPG MAKER GAMES.
Posts
Anyone developing Rpg Maker games should check this out.
If for whatever reason, you feel the file size of your game is too big, there are
some techniques you can use to compress it.
1.Pictures/Tiles
By default, always convert these to JPG file formats.
Takes half the space of a PNG picture, but loss of detail is not noticeable.
If you really want serious compression, try converting the file to uncommon formats such as 256-color bmp, and converting it back to jpg.
This reduces the data to a fourth of its original size.
2.Sound effects
Use MP3 for everything. For sound effects, .wav and mp3 sound very similar, yet mp3 has a lower data footprint.
So, that being said, if for some reason you want to aim for the lowest file size possible, you may want to try these methods.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

...don't ever use jpeg for anything except photographs

This statement is almost as dumb as the opening post. Why would you intentionally slaughter a photo's visuals by saving it as a .jpg like... ever? Photos might very well be the media most reliant on visual fidelity.
As for this topic, this info is bogus. Please ignore it, use just about any other image format, and carry on.
This is actually an attempt to sabotage other users' games with faulty advice.

Well first there is the fact that .png compression is optimized for pixel art and line art, so if you want to compress a raw image without reducing the dimensions, .jpg will usually give you a smaller file size for photos while .png will usually give you a smaller file size for non-photographic images (though obviously this depends on the contents of the image, the level of jpeg compression, and whether the png image is RGB or indexed). Also, the way pixels differ more gradually from each-other in a photograph, especially with a low-quality camera that probably takes a slightly blurry picture anyway but also to a lesser extent with any photo, means that an approximate color difference from one pixel to the next is actually a much less distracting approximation of the actual image than it would be in line art or pixel art where solid colored areas become noticably not-solid any more and pixel effects like dithering and anti-aliasing are ruined, not to mention that the loss of transparency is not an issue in photographs, and so while the lowering of quality is still certainly present, it is comparatively less noticable to the average blah blah blah whatever okay I don't think anyone actually cares.
tl;dr jpeg always screws up images somewhat, but for chapsets it's worse than usual

and if jpg open and save o lot, these comperise more?
NO
STOP
BAD
Proper tips:
ogg files. png files. get rid of images, sound and music you don't use. winzip or winrar.

Every digital camera I have ever owned or seen saves natively as JPG.
"The name "JPEG" stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group"
Why it would be wrong to use JPEG for photographs when that's how they're already saved by just about every camera (I dunno, maybe really high-end ones use something else? I've never owned anything higher than 7.2 Mpx Sony camera) is beyond me.
Plz enlighten.
Also everyone has ignored that RM doesn't even allow you to use JPG so the bad advice from the OP is null anyway.

For RMing, it's about the transparency issues. JPEG messes with transparency (as well as looking terrible when compressed).
As for photos, I've also not had an issue with then despite them being usually rather large.

Yeah, I wasn't aware any RM engine even allowed the use of .jpgs. I wonder which specific one the OP is referring to, if any.
EDIT: Oh wait, it's a joke account. what ho.

I don't think it's a joke account, I think it's just a dumbass.

Get over it, it was a bad suggestion.
rareware created banjo kazooie, one of the best games ever made, so it's kind of uncalled for to say that they are dumbasses even if they only make garbage today.

He's not exactly wrong, Karsuman. While jpeg compression makes photos uglier, it renders video game graphics almost unusable. Game graphics rely on palette indexes, alpha, etc. Photos definitely are not the most reliant on fidelity--don't kid yourself.
JPG images have been supported since RMXP and, like it has already been pointed out, JPG is usually superior to PNG when compressing photo-realistic images that do not require transparencies or alpha channels. That said, PNG is still the way to go for pixel art which comprises the majority of image files in RM games or for images that require transparencies or alpha channels or are otherwise comprised primarily of solid colors (ie: anime).
Also, MP3 isn't supported for SFX usage in RM2K(3). I'd still stick with WAV regardless since the size difference is completely negligible unless you have a longass SFX for whatever reason.
