CloseHopefully everyone here is nerdy enough to realize that the Mars Phoenix Lander finally landed on the Martian North Pole today (you can currently watch the stream of images coming in at NASA.gov... nothing too exciting yet). I think this is pretty cool but also fairly dissappointing as us Earthlings have been launching probes there since the 1960's with only about a 50% success rate and a lot of questions remaining.
NASA has been trying to rev up support for future space projects such as returning to the moon, a manned mission to Mars and a possible permanant space "colony" on the Moon in the next few decades. Where do you folks stand on this? Irrelevant? Inevitable?
For me, I believe it to be inevitable and also fascinating. The biggest disagreement I have with Barack Obama is he plans to cut NASA funding for some educational programs. I want my Mars colony, damn it!

I believe the first moon landing was a fake, and that they actually just want to ACTUALLY land on the moon. BTW I wrote a large essay on why I believed the moon landing was a fake, and so I can put in evidence if anyone wants any.
As for this mars landing thing, I think it could be very real, looks neat.

Yeah, i would be interested in hearing this myersguy. I too believe the moon landing was a fake. I find this to be fascinating and exciting and look forward to seeing even more images displayed. I have now put this on my speed dial.
Can we talk about that in another thread then? Explaining some conspiracy theory doesn't really have anything to do at all with NASA touching down on Mars.
This is only the second time it has been done without any issues in the last 30 years, correct? This expedition is mostly a digging effort to see how far beneath the soil the suspected bodies of water around the north pole region are. The question is, what will happen next, if water is found?

It is also an atmospheric mission - the unit is equipped with a laser that shoots into the martian sky and measures reflections to determine its composition. It also happens to be the northernmost landing site we've done on the planet. Tres cool.
And there is water. It's just frozen. Plus I have it on good authority that, hidden in a mountain, there is a giant facility designed to flash-thaw a block of ice and give Mars an atmosphere just in time to save our heroes.

LOL right we're going to Mars. I think it'd be easier (and less expensive) to invade Narnia.
Scientific breakthroughs justify the expense, especially considering the other things we usually blow our budget on.

I think there's an alien spaceship hidden in a separate mountain that is going to take Gary Sinise back to the planet that they came from originally.
