LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW GREAT THE BINDING OF ISAAC IS (OR ISN'T)

This is by and far the best game I've played all year.
I love the exponential randomization and how it leads to huge levels of replayability; I love the creepy, black humor story being offset by the cartoony poops and monsters and how far the aesthetic is from the "future/fantasy" setting; I love the pureed blend of Zelda with roguelike. I love that the games are short enough for me to get through in 45 minutes, but even if I die after only 5 I just want to play again.
This game is amazing and unique, and it has a lot of great design I think upcoming developers could analyze and learn from. Shall we talk? Have you played it? Have you liked/learned anything from it, from a design standpoint? What did you dislike?

FIX YOUR GAME ED wait wrong thread sorry
Binding of Isaac owns despite all the various (mostly minor) issues and I can't wait for the remake in not-fucking-Flash to be made. It ranks up there in best $3 purchases I've ever made. I've probably put 40-50 hours into it over the original BoI and WotL. I've gotten The End w/ Chest unlocks except with Samson and Eve (worst character) but not STOP PLAYING. It's been a while since I've last played though, I'm not too interested in getting Golden/Platinum God because of the RNG fuckery you need to get some of them like Mom's Contact or Cave Boy and how the room + enemy layout can fuck you over with getting no-damage runs.
also fuck the Necropolis. Hardest place of the game except maybe the Chest. Fuck those masks, fuck the Mask of Infamy, fuck Bloat, fuck all the bad shit you can find in there. None of the alt-floors have a huge potential difficulty spike as the Depths/Necropolis. The only way it could be worse is to get the minimum damage effect you get in the Womb and on.

I've gotten about 40 hours out of it and I know it's one of those games that I'll keep coming back to play if I have an hour to kill. It's perfect for that.
Also the Masks of Infamy are a bitch. I used to feel the same way about the Knights too because the window of hitting them before they turn is so small and gah. And yea, what's up with Eve? She has such a weird playstyle.
Anyway yea I am loving the idea of super-short roguelikes that start quick, end quick and are always new and random. I'd love to try making a mini-roguelike sometime, similar to Isaac, like Desktop Dungeons or Spelunky. Maybe not the biggest, craziest game you've ever seen but fun to pick up again and again.

Whenever I get Tech/Fetus two things go through my head:
1) I'm gonna make it this run
2) Don't gotta deal with Knights
They used to be rough before the WotL expansion and everything got kicked up a notch. On that note the way the expansion content was integrated was pretty poorly done. It was balanced for somebody who had already been playing the game and probably already unlocked It Lives. A new player who bought the full game would basically get wrecked in the Basement/Cellar while they're still learning the controls and game mechanics, especially if they have to fight Widow (lost so many runs when WotL first came out thanks to Widow). Then there's the bug where champion WotL bosses can appear before unlocking Everything is Terrible... a friend who I gifted the game to during the Steam Christmas sale didn't have a great time with the game.
Eve's weird playstyle comes from her starting items literally having no synergy. The Dead Bird (which blows) promotes you getting hit once while the Whore of Babylon is all about never getting hit once activated (and borderline impossible to use in the Womb) and dealing with your larger hitbox too. The 'high risk high reward' style is done far better with Judas who, compared to Eve, might as well be in permanent WoB mode without having to be down to half a heart and then you can pop the Book of Belial for an even greater damage boost or life ups and not lose your damage boost. Playing Eve with the WoB basically means hoarding soul hearts and at that point you might as well play ???.
I think Eve would be far better off with Dead Bird and the blade/knife that hurts you to increase your damage output. At least there'd be synergy between the items. I don't see Eve changing though, I think Ed mentioned that Eve was his favorite character.

Yea, I could see someone getting overwhelmed if they got the DLC at the same time as the game; it's funny how much of the game you can look at and go, "oh wow yea he really didn't plan on it getting this far did he?" That goes for a lot of indie stuff tbh.
Eve is weird for sure. She strikes me as a tad gimmicky. Judas is always fun, although Cain's definitely my favorite because the Lucky Foot is just so good, and the speed is great.
I can tell the game has worn down on me a bit, because when I started I absolutely refused to look up any item effects but about the time the DLC came out I had given up on that. Still, the fact that I can get 40+ hours out of 8$ of game is crazy. I can't remember the last time I got a AAA title with that much value.
Also, Edmund is my bar-none indie hero. Team Meat / Ed are probably the only things I've ever really fanboy'd over, besides the old Blizzard days.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The entire aesthetic of the game is just like "Hey! Hey, look at me, I'm FUCKING OFFENSIVE! I have vagina railguns, and exploding fetuses, and am extremely insulting to Christians! AREN'T YOU OFFENDED YET!? No? Please? C'MON HEY LOOK AT ME I CAN BE EVEN MORE FUCKING OFFENSIVE, I CAN MAKE BABIES DRINK MENSTRUAL BLOOD AND STUFF"
Gameplay was fun for a while though

Obviously it's more extreme than most games, but I appreciate that it's at least original and interesting. I went to Christian schools for most of my life and as far as religion goes, the game is extremely accurate. I don't find it terribly insulting because most of the religious aspects are straight from the Bible - the fact is, the Bible has some pretty extreme stuff in it. You could take it as an insult towards Christians, but you'll find that many priests and religious teachers have no problem admitting that the Old Testament / Revelations exist, are unforgiving and cruel, and were taken very seriously during that time.
The poop, vagina, penis, abortion stuff is sophomoric for sure, but I don't find it terribly offensive - it's not insulting anyone directly. There's dumb shock-value, but I love that a game is willing to go all-out on stupid and tasteless risks, rather than the all-too-common opposite with "safe" material. The fact that the game did so well shows that there's a large following of people who aren't as easily offended as we tend to think.

Cain owns and he's a great starter/relaxing run character. Nothing beats shoving pills down your mouth with impunity! (I'm not good/interested enough to really care about handling Bombs Are Keys pills and Explosive Diarrhea is gone in WotL thanks to a bug). He's easy to unlock with a bit of luck, good stats, and the Lucky Foot is a great item. Shit even if vanilla Isaac got a devil room offering the LF he's still not as good as Cain thanks to his damage boost.
Oh man, Devil Room... you are so tempting but I've screwed myself over so many times thanks to you. I usually skip little stuff like the Pentagram but if I see a Brimstone or Technology I will happily drop myself down to a single heart for it every time
pre-WotL I'd take Lord of the Pit if it showed up because flight is amazing and always helpful. Then WotL came out and between the Holy Grail, Fate, White Dove, and Spirit of the Night and LotP still had the same cost and it started to suck. SotN is better in every way except making your baby look like a freak. Flight lost some value too with some new enemies having explosive shots and the Chest being completely bare of places to fly to to escape from enemies.
Brimstone is another favorite as long as I don't have another major tear altering effect. I've lost good runs because of item combos that affects tears not playing nice at all (Inner Eye and Dr. Fetus being a terrible one that, while it doesn't end your game like others, might as well since your fire rate just went to shit. Good luck killing those respawning enemies!).

I forgot to post this earlier: Some SA posters decompiled the game and spent some time looking through the code. This pastebin is the latest record of their findings. I think it's an interesting read at least!
It was this very topic that made me buy the game off Steam about two weeks ago.
In short, I'm extremely glad that I did.

An excellent life choice!
Also, he posted all of the current information about the remake on edmundm.com:
-Rebirth is a totally remade game based on the flash version of the binding of isaac + wrath of the lamb.
-The game is being produced and developed by Nicalis, the guys who did all the cave story remakes and the VVVVVV port.
-Nicalis is working on the port for Ps3/Vita and PC (steam) and is also currently talking to MS and Nintendo about releasing on their platforms. we are also looking into an iOS version if its not garbage.
-The remake will feature all the content featured in BOI+Wrath but will also feature another Wrath sized expansion over the top that will feature a new final chapter, ending, 2 new playable characters and tons more items, rooms, enemies, bosses and the like. the goal will be to make replaying the whole game not only worth it but also make i so it feels very fresh and new.
-The remake will feature content that was removed from the flash version of the game due to limitations (secret stuff!)
-The remake will feature LOCAL 2 player co-op… no online play because that will just extend the release by another forever.
-The game will go into full time development the 1st of the year and is set to be finished by the end of the year (but we know how this stuff goes)
-The game will feature new music by Danny B as well as some spicy remixes of old tunes.
-I will be lead designer on the project, making sure things are as perfect as we can make them and as true to the original as possible, i will also be designing all the new content and features.
-The game will be getting a full 16bit make over, im doing this because i think the art is tired and im sick of looking at it. i think a fresh coat of paint is needed and i think its kinda appropriate/funny to do a damake for the remake.
-We will try to do a loyalty pre-order discount to anyone who owns the game on pc.
