Seeing as many of us here are PC gamers, this is probably relevant to our interests.

inb4 Microsoft forcing W8 down our throats. ( ゚д゚)・∵.
Fuck you Microsoft. I am going to hold out with Windows 7 for as long as I can because Windows 8 looks like ass.

I'm sure that a lot of developers will acknowledge that many people aren't upgrading to Windows 8 yet and will surely cater generously to Windows 7 (and Vista) users for a while yet.
I wouldn't be too concerned about it yet. Microsoft advertised no plans to bring DX11 to Vista and then ninja released it a week after Win7 launched (which was bundled with it). Even if DX11.1 doesn't come to Win7, it isn't adding much--mostly stereoscopic 3D support and some Metro integration that serves no function on Win7 anyway. If anything, this is only indicative that DX12 won't be released for Win7, but that is expected anyway. Don't be surprised if there's yet another new Windows OS when that's ready for showtime.

This is probably the only feature that DX11.1 has that will matter, and it affects developers only--not consumers: Use Direct3D in Session 0 processes

Besides, 95% of games are still DX9. Expect them to be stuck in DX11 for the next six years, since that's probably what the next Microsoft console will use.
This may just be my computer naivety speaking...
But doesn't pulling stunts like this only make people turn away from official Microsoft products? People buy a computer expecting it to fulfill a set of functions. Having to upgrade every 5-10 years has become an accepted norm (like buying a car every ~10), but when underhanded tactics are used to increase purchase frequency, people will just write and distribute utilities that workaround official restrictions. If more restrictions are imposed, people work around them even more. If it ever got so bad that grandma and grandpa installed a comparable Linux build on their new computer, Microsoft would go into the dustbin of history.

But yeah. As Jude said, something'll probably give.
DirectX 11.1 and Windows 7

Portions of the “DirectX 11.1 Runtime” are being made available on Windows 7 Service Pack 1

You can untwist your panties now.
People shouldn't be worked up over Windows 8. Windows has always released a decent OS every other release. That or Windows 8 will soon be your new xbox platform. But a large section of developers will not be content with Windows 8 being a closed platform. Notch and Valve have already said they won't release anything for Windows 8.

I'm sure knowledgable users are also not content with Windows 8 being a closed platform, not just the developers. I mean really, I can't install any Metro "app" (god I hate that word) software except those expressly permitted by Microsoft on the Windows Store? What is this, Apple Lockdown 2.0? (屮゜Д゜)屮

Yeah I know we still have the desktop (for now), but I'm talking about the principle of the matter.
