BOOKS AND THE DASTARDLY SEQUELS

Have any of you wrote a full novel? It's a wonderful feeling that comes with the completion. However, if you're foolish enough to tag your title page with "The First ___ Novel" or something along those lines before the title, watch out son! It's been almost a year now, and not but 8 chapters have been finished in my sequel. With a usual outcome of 20-some odd chapters, 8 is pathetic!
The problem with writing a sequel, is the lack of motivation. I've tasted the sweet victory of typing out those final lines, now what? The process is boring now as it's already been done. So here's my question to you:
How do you keep going? If there's a writer's block thumbing your fingers shut, how do you barrel on with your works? Finally: What motivates you?

I've only written short stories with any regularity. I think I topped out at 35,000 words or so for any particular one.
I have to wait until I'm inspired to write, even for such short stories. Sometimes time between stories last months. But when inspiration hits you WRITE IT DOWN (even if it's on a napkin). Crank out as much as you can when you are pumped.

I have actually worked to avoid inspiration and have been trying to train myself to perform whether or not I am in the mood to. This is especially true for composing, because writing music is something where people tend to depend completely on inspiration and not really have a rational handle on what they are doing.
Well, I guess my end goal for writing isn't exactly lofty, either.
My advice is only worthwhile if you just write for fun (as opposed to writing for a purpose, such as commercial works or a game or something).
People shouldn't listen to my advice, anyway.

I don't know about that, Kenton.
Personally, both statements are true. It's important to create without and with motivation. Sadly, these ideals are conflicted inside me at the moment. Yet, nonetheless true. Finding ideas out of the blue and jotting them down (a reason I usually always have paper and pen handy) is a great resource.

I have mainly only written short novels but would love to write a full novel one day. The only reasons i haven't are because of lack of time as well as motivation. To write something good i need to be motivated to do so.
