HAND DRAWN/PAINTED TILESETS

Custom pixel work is rather expensive, much more so in my experience than commissioning a more traditional artist. That said, I'm wondering if there is any precedent of using hand drawn/painted tilesets and sprites in an RPG Maker game.
I've searched around and found some "cel-shaded" tilesets that weren't really and some that were striving for a painted look but I've never seen one that eschews digital art altogether. I'm wondering if there's a particular reason why? Is it not possible or would it just be really difficult to pull off.
Apologies if this is in the wrong forum. It just didn't strike me as a Help/Request sort of question!

Also pixel art isn't more expensive than traditional art. It's a matter of quantity.

Very cool... Glad to see it's doable. Might take a walk down that route.
Was I perhaps ripped off then when I paid $90 for a sprite sheet? Cause I have to say, that sucked.

It depends on the number of frames.

Behold my sprite sheet, in all its glory! :)
That sprite isn't even in a unique style, there are generators that can create sprites similar to that.

Sunset Over Imdahl did it and quite well I must add.
There was an RMXP project a few years back called Dreams that was using all hand drawn stuff, looked quite beautiful and I've always wanted to try something similar just didn't know how.. Still don't actually :p
Also $90 for that sprite? Get your money back.

aww, you should oust the person who sold it to you. that's rough.
or you could start a foundation to help users of the RM community who get ripped off.

Ha. I don't think I'll go so far as to start a foundation. Maybe I'll start a thread where people can share the information of reliable (and fairly priced) artists, musicians, etc. That could be useful.
project wasn't finished but this one is "painted" instead of pixel and I love the way it looks except for the fact that pixel sprites look wrong with the background.

and no sprite should ever cost $90 and that is 100% generated unless you had that commissioned from the creator of looseleaf. there are several websites where you can report an artist and check if an artist has been reported before.

Being a dude who isn't a fan of pixel art, I enjoy "painting" my tilesets.
It isn't too hard making hand drawn overlays if you're using a 32 pixel grid.
Throwing them into a tileset format isn't too hard either. It's a good idea for dungeons, or maps with a lot of redundant tiles.

A lesson well learned. :)
