Basically I've always had ideas about what would make some of the games I've played more enjoyable or less frustrating etc...
So I figured that instead of just complaining I'd get off my ass and try it out for myself, even if I don't end up creating a great game; perhaps I'll at least get a deeper respect for the development community and what it takes to really create something.
Basically I know nothing at this point and I could really use some help from the community. Where should I start? what is a good engine to begin with if I want to create an rpg?
Hope to hear from you guys soon

Start with free stuff. Probably R2k. If you end up not wanting to continue making games, you shouldn't get costly ones.

I thought talk like this was frowned upon?
Anyway, I would suggest to try out RPG Maker VX Ace, or perhaps RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. If you just want to mess with things, the demo of VX Ace lasts for thirty days, but that's really the only limit that has. The Light version has no time limit, but there are other limits. I can't recall them off-hand, though.
Try RPG Maker 2003, free and better for more SNES-like games.
RM2k/3. Is. Not. Free.
How many times does this need to be stated?
Anywho, welcome to RMN! If you want free, try VX Ace Lite or the trial for VX Ace. Or perhaps another custom engine like Sphere.
EDIT:
updated for emphasis, and this link

It is reasonably up to date.
