It's been a while since I've played an rpg, but I recently bought RMXP after having the trial for a couple days. I'm excited but I'm starting small to make sure I can finish my project. Does the concept of episodes (one or two in the life of a few main characters) make sense? Ideally, the third episode would be the actual game & adventure. In this way, any back story can be played instead of read from a cutscene or dialogue box.
Anyways, it's nice to meet you all!

Thanks for the welcome! I figured if I wanted to start a new project, it'd have to be short and different enough to keep me from quitting. There's always the possibility of combining them all afterwards, too.
There's nothing wrong with short games. You might have to adjust the pacing so that, at the end of the game, players still feel like they've accomplished something.
That's what I think, anyway.

Oh yes, even though RMN's architecture doesn't really support episodic games, it is totally a valid way of approaching and developing a game. Your concept sounds interesting and you should explore its development.
Welcome to RMN!

Hello, LiannaSays.
That concept does sound interesting, almost like how I originally planned one of my novel ideas. Following different characters individually before bringing them all together in a later episode. I do like the sound of playing their lives rather than reading about it. I think the above posters are right, though, in that the episodes still should feel like complete stories even if they are only part of a bigger one.
I also have to mention that your name is almost the same as one of my original characters', Liana. Fun fact!

Hello kentona and Rayne, thanks for the welcome!
I've figured out a way to make the first episode a complete adventure in itself, now if only I could find the free time to work on it. :S
Ps. Nice to meet a fellow writer, Rayne!

Hey Lianna! I've seen this sort of stuff done on video game consoles and if executed right it really gives the game world an epic quality to it.
Are you familiar with the Super Nintendo games Rudra no Hihou and Live A Live? Both these games were released only in japan and can only be played in english through the computer, but as it turns out they happen to follow that structure of playing through an individual character's story and in the end they unite to fight a grander conflict.
Another instance of this I can think of would be Wild Arms on PlayStation 1.
Mother 3 on the Game Boy Advance fits in as well, and Earthbound plus Final Fantasy 6 to a lesser degree.
I'm sure I am missing some other games that do this, but the point is you might want to play these games if you haven't already to garner some inspiration for your own game! (plus they are great games anyway)
Ah I almost forgot Kentona's Hero's Realm, duh~!
By the way how could you have no free time during this time of year?! You poor soul Dx
