Honestly, I have no clue how to do this. I know this is most likely a frequently-asked, noobish question, but... HELP!!

I'm guessing the graphic is okay, but is the event "On Hero Level" and "Push Button"? Or whatever terminology is for the maker you're running?
Side note: I usually make events that send people to other maps as "Below Hero" and "On Hero Touch", but that's me.
Additional aside: We are talking about "doors" that lead to other maps, right?

Firstly - what maker. Secondly - what do you want your door to do? Thirdly - next time you post a topic, please add more details. We can't help you if we don't know what you want.
I'm assuming you want a simple door teleport? Make an event and choose a closed door sprite for the graphic. Make it the Same as Hero. Set the event to either on touch or on action - whichever is best for you. In the event part, play a sound of the door opening. Add your teleport command. Done.
Of course, there's other ways to do it, but I don't know if you want something simple or not.
Also, in VX/Ace you can right-mouse click and a menu will pop up. In it is an automatic door event. All you have to do is pick the door graphic and where you want to be teleported.

Right, so... what exactly did you need? What type of door are you going for? It is teleporting or actual doors?
Clarity please.
Clarity please.
I want the door to slowly swing open (like a real door), then I want the hero to step inside and teleport into another room.
Assuming you're using the default "object1.png" for your door graphic, where:
down-facing = closed
right-facing = opening graphic 1
up-facing = opening graphic 2
left-facing = open
This is pretty easy. Create a new event with the door graphic of your choice, and set Facing to "Down" with everything else left at default. In your event commands, do:
Play Sound: door1 (whichever door opening sound you want to use)
Move Event: This Event, Face Right, Face Up, Face Left (or just Right,Up) - Frequency: 6
Move Event: Hero, Phasing Mode ON, Move Up, Phasing Mode OFF
Proceed with Movement
Teleport: (Your Map here)
Play Sound: door2 (close door sound effect)
That's it! No switches, variables or anything. Next time you go to the map that has the door, it'll automatically revert back to down-facing.
From here, you can experiment with Animation Type (if you have a glowing door or an eye blinking through a peep hole or something), and other graphic tweaks like adding black tiles underneath the door so it looks like you're walking into a dark room. Hope that helps!
