I ultimately like jRPGs better. Sorry, Halo fans, but despite my age groups loving shooters, I hate them. I still like wRPGs, though.
author=Mitsuhide_The_Vagrantauthor=kentonaThen perhaps I just haven't played enough recent WRPG's...? I don't know. But, of the ones I've played, other than New Vegas, there weren't any mechanics I can immediately think of that allowed me to stop and think, they always had me saying, "Shit! Where'd that guy go?! I'm gonna f*cking die again, aren't I!"
Almost all of the wRPGs I've played (and enjoyed) have pause-able battles where you get to issue commands, while a lot of jRPGs I've played tend to have an Active Time Bar or variation on it, requiring me to issue commands as quickly as possible so as not to be at a disadvantage.
turn-based vs active battles isn't a trait of either flavor of RPGs.
I find it hilarious how you can just pause the game in Bethesda games by opening your inventory.
"Hey, deathclaw, could you wait a moment before killing me? I gotta browse my Pip-Boy, chow down some centuries-old salisbury steaks, select which gun to use and finally put on some better armor."
I tend to prefer jRPGs for a few different reasons. For the most part (there are a FEW exceptions)... jRPGs are more difficult, I enjoy the gameplay mechanics more, and the storylines are better IMO. Not to say that I don't like wRPGs - I do. But games like Fallout, which I'm only mentioning since it's been mentioned so much already... to me, feels like there's barely any plot. It's dull, drab. No real twists and turns. Point A to Point B. That's just how I feel. Gameplay is fun though.
But in the end, I play RPGs for the story. So jRPGs > wRPGs for me.

I like JRPGs more.
They kinda seem to b more cute and comedic/ happy.. (- -)\
The art also has a bit of a delicate/ elegant feel. And... Idk, i guess i just also like the characters more and their attitudes.
I dont rly like crude humour and stuff like that, or people saying "im gonna fucking rip ur head off" either.
Maybe its a combination of these factors w/ the idea that some ppl just value more the idea of having fun/ destressing, over having intense graphics/ fancy controls/ full-on challenges.

author=Magical_RuNE_Knight200Then maybe you should download a cute companion, specifically this person: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/images/48832-3-1357274016.jpg

It is true that wrpgs tend to be more character-driven than plot-driven. Which is often due to their nonlinear structure of fetch quests taken in a random order.
But I would say that there's still a fair amount of "twists". Especially if you look at characters. Their motivations change and you learn new information about them. Take, for example, that old New Vegas game that we keep coming back to. Ceasar is a really interesting character when you get down to it. His backstory and person includes a number of interesting "twists" in it. Though you sort of have to find them and play the game in a certain way to even find some of them out. Otherwise he's just a "villain".
Mr. House is similar. Though his twist is probably less interesting (or maybe I just haven't found it yet!).
And not to mention that in wrpgs the biggest twist is probably the player character herself. A person who helps a community and when she gets enough reputation to meet the leader she brutally murders him! Who could have seen that coming!
Western for me.
When I was growing up, it was Japanese all the way. They could just do no wrong at all. Lately, though, all of the series I grew up with have either...
A) Changed their focus to one I don't like (Final Fantasy)
B) Dropped off the face of the planet entirely (Breath of Fire)
C) Faded into seemingly permanent obscurity (Ogre Battle)
The Japanese series that are still chugging out entries, such as the Tales series and Suikoden, are ones that I never particularly enjoyed so I don't feel compelled to go near them or to replace my former favourites with them.
Now, Western RPGs have gotten steadily better since the 1990s. I've got such a hard on for anything Elder Scrolls related these days that it isn't funny. There are plenty of other Western RPGs that I enjoy, the majority of them probably on my Steam account these days, but Bethesda's are simply the greatest in my eyes.
While Japanese RPGs seem to have no idea what their identity is anymore, Western RPGs are becoming more sure of themselves year by year. It has created a very level played field.

I've played more JRPGs than WRPGs but I don't have real preferences. Both genres have their good and their bad. Art-wise I generally prefer anime over western style. Unless it's that really annoying cute/girly looking anime stuff.

Ever played Lonesome Road DLC for New Vegas? You discover that you accidentally destroyed a city that would've had a bright future.

I probably worded myself wrong there. In terms of linearity, jRPGs are obviously more linear. I guess the best way to explain myself is that almost every plot device used in the Fallout games, I was already expecting... with the exception of the Old World Blues DLC. Most of the stuff in that was fairly unpredictable and more enjoyable than 3 and New Vegas' main stories combined IMO.
Take for example... Far Cry 3. Similar gameplay to Fallout 3/NV. Difference is way better plot (again, just my opinion). REALLY enjoyed that game. In a different style, the Mass Effect series. Amazing wRPGs with one of the best plots out there.
I just like to be left with an impression from a game, regarding it's plot. I'm the same way with most forms of media. The way things are currently going though, eventually I think I'll start to prefer wRPGs over jRPGs as the amount of modern jRPGs with amazing plots are dwindling and wRPGs with great plots are starting to pop up more and more.
My opinion about WRPGs has changed to something more positive nowadays. HOWEVER, I am not a huge fan of Real Time Battle Systems or Action Battle Systems. I prefer to play through a menu or in a very chess-like manner. Which is why I tend to also incline towards JRPGs more.
Something more leisurely pace than mashing through buttons making countless of combos in a mindless manner. If I wanted to button smash I'd go play a Bullet Hell Shooter which requires more reflexes or dish it out in fighting games. :v
Unless it's Raidou Kuzunoha/Ys Origins with Hugo. Those games are awesome.
That and I like anime and cute and shiny stuff. And fantastical elements that doesn't follow the realism norm.

Literally do not give a shit. I enjoy both genres immensely. Both genres have different ideas, philosophies, styles, systems, and tastes to offer. None of which are mutually exclusive to the other. Insinuating that you can't like both JRPGs and WRPGs like saying you can't like strawberry and chocolate ice cream.
Well, to be honest I'm too familiar with what a Wrpg is. I keep hearing that they have become increasingly good as of late, but unfortunately I don't own any last generation console (or a PC that can handle those games) But as far as game mechanics and general aesthetics go I'm fairly confident in saying that I prefer Jrpgs...
One thing I came to loathe about jrpgs, though, is that they have become more and more 'Japanese'. It was easier for me to relate with the characters when they were amorphous masses of pixels with bland personalities as opposed to now when everything must fall into some kind of Japanese archetype, from bishies to tsunderes and everything in between. And this thing people call "moe" feels like nothing but watered down fetishes to me. It's really creepy. =S

Hardly. Those suspicious yellowmen didn't even invent Coca-Cola.
