A DISCUSSION ABOUT A NEW GAME

Dear RPG maker community

I enjoy the Pokemon games since Red / Blue and I always ask myself whether I even could develop my own games. However, to develop a fan game was never my goal. But to develop your own monster catching game would be a dream. For that I would like to discuss with you about what you like to see in a new monster catch game.
Maybe an unusual story that has not occurred in Pokemon, or particular features of monsters. Should it have a special combat system etc., for every suggestion, idea I would be happy. Currently, I think about a Side View - Battle System:

Hey, I definitely think there's some room out there for more monster-catching.

One of the best things about the original Pokemon games were the sense of magic and mystery the games had. You never knew what kind of Pokemon would be hiding in a bit of grass, and when you saw your friends with something weird like an Abra you'd freak out. I'd discuss for hours with friends the different Pokemon I'd found and all the moves and cheats we'd figured out.

The Wikipediation of everything has diminished that feeling lately, but I think if you could recapture the magic of exploring a world with surprises around every corner, you'd have a great game on your hands.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Hmm. That's certainly one thing that's easier to do with an indie game.

I think if you make a game like this, a special combat system would be almost a necessity. You want to come up with a core feeling for your game. And then you want to try to make every part of the game enhance that feeling.

If the game is primarily about collecting monsters, then maybe every part of the game should involve collecting things. Collecting the monsters might need to be more complex than it is in Pokemon. Perhaps you have to collect pieces of monsters, or accumulate points before you can catch a monster. You will want catching a monster to feel climactic, you won't want it to feel commonplace and you won't want it to feel like catching the monster is only the first step.

Pokemon is honestly more about training monsters than collecting them. That's why it's an RPG - you have to build your monsters into stronger fighters. Most of the game is spent training your monsters, by battling wild pokemon or by battling other trainers. The climactic parts of the game test your power by making you battle the world's greatest trainers to prove that you're the best. When you catch monsters in Pokemon, it's usually the first thing you do in a new area. It's a big part of the game, but it's not your final goal.

So what do you want your game to really be about, at its core? What do you want to focus on above everything else? If you tell us that, maybe we can help you brainstorm ideas.
