RAR FILES

Every once in a while I download stuff that is a .rar file.
And I have unpacked it using trial offers of
Winzip, Bitzip, etc...
The problem is that trial offers are only good for so
long. And I don't want to pay for a program to unzip .rar
files.
I have heard of free programs on the net, but I'm worried
about programs with viruses, or that come with hidden
programs.
I was wondering what people who have something like this would recomend.
I would mainly use this to occassionally download games from RMN
so that I could play them ( the ones that use this format.)
PS - I'm also wondering why people use this format for
RPG Maker VX Ace when it already compresses the data for
you in zip format.
I would recommend either 7zip, or my personal favorite IZarc.
I'm not sure why people use it, because it highly depends on the individual. I can offer some guesses; perhaps some people find the default compression doesn't work as well. Or maybe they just don't know how to use it?

I recommended Winrar, Just ignore the 30 day trial because It broke. And works even if the trial is over.
Never thought I'd see the day when I agreed with jomarcenter. :P
WinRAR is my recommendation as well. I've been using it free for years.

winrar. if you put the commands in the context menu(right click menu) you can extract files without the annoying trial period pop-up.
I use 7zip all the time. I used to use winrar but like 7zip better. but it is up to personal preference.

do you want to know a secret?
winrar will never stop working. the 30-day trial goes on forever.
not a thing to worry about. 7zip is nicer, anyway, although I'm kind of used to winrar.
(and not a secret because like seventy people already said it but w/e)
I downloaded 7zip and it worked very nicely, thanks.
Currently playing the RPG Maker Chain Game now.
I wouldn't recomend Bitzip, even the trial.
It comes with other programs, that you don't
even want.
