I just want it to be good - Colors and Generations were a step in the right direction. And I've wanted more Sonic since Generations got my hopes up, and this looks good!

I'm confused by people's dislike of the other characters. Even in the cartoons it's the same. The point of different speed and gameplay is to highlight Sonic's special power. If everyone ran fast, it'd be boring and people would just ask, "Why not just be all Sonic?"
It'd be like if all the Justice League members were just The Flash.
Edit: In Sonic Adventure, Sonic Team was just embellishing on what people loved about Sonic 3. Tails could hover, and was not as fast as Sonic. Knuckles could glide, and climb. His gameplay was slow and explorative.
Sonic just raced through levels at the speed of sound.
All Adventure did was give Knuckles a reason to explore, added a robot, and a fishing game. You ask, "Why fishing in Sonic!?" think about it. This is japan we're talking about.
The fishing segments weren't that fun and I felt that It left the game unfocused. I wouldn't be so hard on it if it was an optional mini-game, but it's actually required to get the full ending in the game. Also, I have no idea what Japan has to do with this because, in my opinion, making what feels like a compilation of micro games instead of one cohesive game wasn't a good move.
I'm aware that having every character run as fast as Sonic is boring. I'm not trying to say "everyone should be Sonic" so much that everyone shouldn't break the concept of Sonic's gameplay. What I love about Sonic 3 is that yes, every character had different abilities that affected playstyle, but was the overall pacing of the game drastically affected with both non-Sonic characters? No. I was still traversing through both fast and slower segments, putting my reflexes to the test, and exploring short, but complex levels. My criticism of Adventure is that strayed TOO FAR from Sonic's core design. Who wants to stop and fish, go ridiculously slow, or hunt for Macguffins in a Sonic game?
Note that I'm not saying Adventure is a bad game, it's still one of the best of Sonic's 3D games, but because of the unfocused gameplay I can't rank it on par with previous games.
I can't honestly refute any of that. While I love Big the cat as a character, his stages, E-103 and Amy were usually the last stories I would play because I dreaded the slow tedium. Though for Super Sonic, it is hard to stop playing.
In Sonic Adventure 3, it was clear they figured out what you said and focused on three types of gameplay. That said, I fuckin' hated Knuckles and Rouge's levels. Really just wanted some more Big the Cat! Rofl

Sonic Adventure 2 you mean? Lol
I kind of miss Big myself. His latest appearance was just a model view in the 3DS version of Sonic Generations. :(
Sorry, typo. I am on my phone usually. Easy to miss the little stuff.
It's sad that the big stupid oaf has become nothing but background cameos. I think you can see him fishing in SA2 on that night time highway stage? I remember seeing him and thinking, "wtf! Hahaha!"

Or how he was trapped in Pumpkin Mountain, then they take all the cameos out in the Game Cube version.
That's an odd thing to take out... Big's secret adventure was the best!
Oh yeah, I remember my friend found a glitch in SA1, where you could get Big into Emerald Coast? Or was it Tails...?
Back on topic, my main concern with this game is that Green Hill setting in the demo. Doesn't really give a good idea what to expect.
I do, however, like that they're using Sonic the Hedgehog 2 style tunnel running for the parts shown that wasn't side scroller. Hopefully we'll see more soon. I'm really curious what else there is to do, level-wise.
On another note, how big is Mobius, really? Seems like these infinite amount of levels would take up a lot of the world by now. Especially odd since we keep seeing Green Hill Zone homages. Or is every game a new planet?
(obviously Sonic CD was, and Colors)

Here is some info: http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_Lost_World
It takes place on an island called Lost Hex, and the zone displayed is called the Wind Hill Zone, I think. It's another one of those tropical zones with checkered cliffs that appears in Sonic games quite a lot.
Sonic takes place on Earth. A heavily fantasized, alternate reality of earth where loops and floating platforms seem to be natural and anthropomorphic animals are running about alongside humans. Some of the landscapes, including South Island and Angel Island, are based off real places, which supports that theory.
"Mobius" was due to a mistranslation.
@Dudes Big can naturally get into Emerald Coast and Tails can most definitely be glitched into Emerald Coast...and parts of Sonic's Speed Highway...and Final Egg...and a plethora of other characters in places they shouldn't be. It's a pretty glitchy game to be honest, but none of its glitches impede my ability to play the game the way it was supposed to be played or enjoy it (looking at you Sonic 06).
The first sonic games before sonic adventure was confirmed to take place on Mobius thanks to the instruction booklets. Also Sonic riders: Zero gravity, has a stage called Mobius Rift hinting the racing games also takes place on Mobius. So your dreams can still come true dude.
Nope.
Many of the English manual stories are different from the Japanese manuals, and ever since Sonic became international (starting with Sonic Adventure) Sonic's World has often been referred to as either "Sonic's World" or "Earth." Then again "Mobius" in the comic series and other media is pretty much Earth in the future.
Sonic News Network Wiki
Mobius is the planet that the Sonic the Hedgehog characters are from in SatAM, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Underground, and the comics. Mostly anthropomorphs live there. Note that while some of the early American storylines also had the Sonic game series set on Mobius, the Japanese manuals (outside of Sonic Spinball) have never mentioned the name of Sonic's world. However, some English translations in post-Sonic Adventure games identify it as the earth.

Just watched some Sonic Lost World Gameplay not too long ago, and it looked pretty solid! And the 3DS port looked good too- it had actual 3D gameplay and looked on par with the Wii U one. I'm a little concerned about the music, most of the stages looked VERY fun, but one was in full 2D and didn't appeal to me much.
I don't really know how I feel about pressing a button to control speed, but it looks a lot of fun. I like the splitting paths, though, that's something I've longed missed with Sonic games.
Well, at least using a button to control speed isn't too different from a boost button. I like to think of it as a boost button without a meter.

It's just that it's something I would do when playing a Mario game, not a Sonic game. It doesn't feel like a necessary move imo.
