HE KNOWS ABOUT TIMED HITS

After browsing Tvtropes all night, I came to an odd but useful question: how to make a rpg game without using the timed hits trope.
The trope states that there are times when NPCs and such with break the fourth wall or explain to the player without talking to them directly how to do things in the world:
NPC: "Do a barrel roll!"
Player: "Okay."
NPC: "Press A to shoot!"
Player: "Cool."
Player's character: "LOLwut? What's an 'A' button?"
I can't think of any way to avoid this trope without avoiding a tutorial altogether. Any clues on how to do this?

I'm a firm advocate of the camp for showing a brief tutorial at the start (like a picture of a keyboard with the keys labelled with their functions) and not have NPCs give tutorials. That said, this can be really entertaining if you do it right, so there's no reason to avoid the trope simply to avoid it.
There's also the option of having the NPC say "You can do a barrel roll here." and then have a pop up message on the screen explaining how to do said barrel roll, instead of the NPC saying "hey, you have to press A"
I find that it works perfectly with certain games like EarthBound/Mother 2 for the SNES, but when it comes to games that you want to take seriously, I don't think there is one.
or you could ignore those lameass tropes and do what works best for your game. what reason do you have to want to avoid tutorials?
tutorials are made to explain game functions. they don't have to be long winded things. they are what you make them. they can be short or even just a picture that fully explains a function. having a character say it in game is meant to be a fun way to give tutorial information.
what is so bad about having a small text box pop up that says "Press A to shoot"?
what is so bad about having a full list of commands for the player to go through?
what is so bad about having a tutorial level that includes obstacles that force you to do every action with text boxes that explain things?
if your answer is "because it's on tvtropes", save your breath u.u
unless you find a way to telepathically send that information to the player, you will have to do it one of those ways. there can be many variations on those ways to make it unique and fit your game. the main goal is to teach the player how to play your game. breaking the forth wall or using a "trope" is irrelevant.
just because it's a trope doesn't mean you can't/shouldn't do it. someone just added it to a stupid list of things that have been done before and called it a trope. now people are avoiding those things because they are tropes. sometimes things need to be done a certain way because this is a game, it's not something that should be avoided. fuck tvtropes piss me off.

You can have a text that is meant to be read by the player only.
Character 1: Do a barrel roll!
Character 2: Okay.
Text on screen: Press 'A' to do a barrel roll.
Character 1: Do a barrel roll!
Character 2: Okay.
Text on screen: Press 'A' to do a barrel roll.
There's also the option of having every action performed by the same key so that the player instinctively knows what key to press.
