What program to use..... Topic

I am new to this. I want to make a SRPG (like Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and Fire Emblem) but don't know what software to use. It appears most "maker" software creates "old-school," "s/nes-style" RPGs, which is not what I am looking for. So, what software is there for me to use?

You could use RPG Maker VX Ace, but you would need to use a script
to change the battle system into a a tactics one (I know there's
a couple good ones out there.)

If you don't like the graphics style there are options for different
tilesets (there's some free one's out there.)

I don't know if this program would be the best for what you want to do.
I just know that its possible to do.

Depends how skilled you are. Since you're a beginner, the most recommended programs to make something like that in are RPG Maker 2003 or VX Ace. With 2k3, you can make something like this, but you need to be pretty skilled with using switches, variables, forks, and the works, so I wouldn't recommend it without some practice. With VX Ace, you would need to use scripts for this to get done. But if you're not very good with scripting (which most people are when they're first introduced to VX Ace), they'll become lost without some first hand knowledge about it. My advice to you is to use VX Ace, since its the better of the two and the most current, and make another type of game before moving on to something like that.

Definitley don't make a complicated game to start with.
Get used to how to use the program mechanics and make the
simplist and most crapiest game you can think of.
Once you have the basics down you can just use someone else's
script (because learning how to write your own script is like
blah...)

But to make sure you are getting what you really want try
playing some tactical games made with rpg maker. That way you
can see what they're capable of. There's got to be some around
on this webpage somewhere.

@kory_toombs: So, I was trying to look around the site and find a template for making an SRPG, but couldn't find one. Yes, I know I am a beginner and you recommend starting with something else, but I think I'm just going to jump in with both feet and start by making a basic SRPG "instance" map (a single map to populate with monsters and players with no overworld or story....at first) and go from there. But alas, (again) I couldn't find an SRPG script out there. Do you think you could help a guy out?

I have never used this battle system so I can't tell you
which script to use. There are games on this website that
have tactical battle systems. I would recommend messaging
someone whose made one and asking them about it. Maybe if
your lucky someone will share their script with you.
