I wanted to make a tutorial on the basic options in the battle mode. I really have no clue how to go about this. I'm sure there are other forums dealing with this, but I can not find them.

Thanks for any help.

Well, best way is to put the player in an easy fight and let him figure it out for himself while providing a minimum of text to explain the very basics. Basically, the less text you use, the better.
If you have a more complex battle system, spread out the tutorial over the course of several battles, and introduce one new mechanic at the time.
Can I add text during the battle?

and I am using vx ace.

Thanks

yes, in troops page, battle event you can add text, and a lot of other things

first you must create event that start a battle with a special troops (you will create a troops with the name of tutorial)
create an event, page 3 scene processing, battle processing, chose tutorial troop
Great, it is working perfectly. Thanks for the help.

Or you can have NPC's explain things to you outside of battle.
I personally don't like seeing text in battles. It makes me want to
press enter 100 time just to get through it.

At the very least don't make it manitory. Have an NPC throw you
into a battle if you want to learn. If you don't then you can just
continue on your merry way.
