I was thinking about submitting some video footage of my
games (or perhaps even doing some videos of the first ten
minutes of a game, etc...)

I was wondering what software I would need (that would be
free and be compatible with this website.)

I guess I would also need a microphone to do this, if
I want to do commentary on the video.

One of the best ones to use is Camtasia Studio, though it is a bit system heavy. It lets you edit, upload and add special effects to videos, as well as record voice/sound, edit that and do many other things.
