HELLO! AND THE ETHICS OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Hey all, I'm Yitaru (an old name from the days I played a Taru-taru in the beta for FFXI and promptly never played the game again)! I am new to RMN, though have messed around with various RPG Maker engines (2000, 2003, XP, and now VX Ace) for years.

I have not completed many games in the past, and would not stand behind the ones I have. As a birthday present, I now legitimately own RPG Maker software for the first time in my life (RPG Maker VX Ace), and so would like to change that. I've come here to find the support for that goal.

Ironically, while I used to be an avid JRPG fan, I have become very disenchanted with the genre. I still play jrpgs, but generally only indie games (e.g. like those on this site), and fully expect to never play a Final Fantasy after X.

In spite of that, I DO love making them, and have a number of difficult ambitions I would love to make happen (of course). The foremost of those is to try and make a game that steps outside of the "box" of being a normal RPG... whatever that may mean to you.

As a first step towards realizing my ambitions, I have a question for you all that I've always been bothered by: the ethics of external resources. Where should I go online to find better music/graphics/scripts etc.? What must I do to be able to use them? What do I put in the credits--if that is necessary at all? And, finally, what about commercial products I've bought and own (e.g. soundtracks)? Is it alright to use music that comes from another video game? And is it tasteful?

I currently have no intention of ever making a game commercially myself.

Thanks all! Hope this wasn't TOO longwinded. :D

As long as you don't plan on releasing your game as commercial (aka for money), nobody is going to really give a shit where you get your resources from tbh.

However, theres an ol' unspoken rule of never taking resources from another rpgmaker/indie game.

It sounds confusing and doesn't make sense and there's been forum topics time and time again debating this shit, but that's the gist of it. I wouldn't be too bothered by it.

As for finding spriting resources:

Has great sprite/texture/sound rips.

For music i highly suggest newgrounds' audio section.

Bahhhhhhhh, welcome to rmn.

Welcome to the RMN forums! Enjoy your stay.

There are free resources everywhere on the internet, and we have stuff for use here as well.
Awesome! I feel like I just hit a goldmine. Thanks to you both!

And thanks for the welcome :3
Yeah, people will use rips and music from commercial games and while some might be bothered a bit by it no one really makes a stink of it. However, taking resources from other indie games is a no-no (maybe it's some sort of Robin Hood mentality? i dunno). Also, you can always try your hand at making your own! It's a lot of fun (even if they turn out shitty).

And yes, like Solarlune mentioned, Happy organized a music event wherein the composers here made a free to use musicpack:

(maybe we should do an RMN RTP??)

Welcome to RMN!
Great! I will keep that in mind. And I'm actually really excited about the prospect of designing my own music. Any good recommended (free) software?

Also, kentona, I wanted to say I read your article series on "The Basics of Game Design" and found them really, really enlightening and helpful. Thank you for writing that!
