I am currently designing a boss for the Beta of my MMO Shinsei No Ou. Anyways, I wanted to first ask a couple of questions. I know to some Boss Battles on RPG's and MMOs in general may be boring, but below are three questions I would like to ask to get this discussion started.
Once you have answered those, here is a little layout of the boss I have been working on. I'll get some Rough Sketches and Designs up by Sunday at the earliest.
Health and Statistic: Undecided right now, I'll think of a suitable level for the Boss, most likely over 500 for Health. As for the rest of the monsters Stats, these will be decided later on of course.
The Battle and Tactics:
Form 1:I want to utilize multiple forms of this Boss. Naga will initally take the form of a massive White Serpent. Because of her superior size she will have a better Vision Range, attacking all enemies in a 15x15 Tile Radius around her. While in this form she will Bite and Smash players with her tail, utilizing Poison and Paralysis Techniques to injure her enemies. Also at times she will use a technique called "Chew and Spit", if used on a player they will be biten viciously and spat out. For every attack recieved while she is attacking a player, a fraction of the damage given to her will transfer on to a player. When "Spat" the player will be effected with Several Status Effects: "Bleeding", "Poisoned", "Scared", and "Injured". If surrounded by too many players, Naga will swing her tail in a 7x7 Radius around her. Any players hit by this tail will recieve massive damage as well as "Knockback" Damage.
Form 2: Once 75% of Naga's health is depeleted, it will change its battle tactics, however retain the same look. In this form Naga, will begin to regurgitate many small White Snakes to attack the player. If biten by these Snakes a player will recieve the effects of the Naga Humors. If hit by Burning Skills, Naga will catch on fire due to her highly flamable Humors, Fire will be the snakes greatest weakness. If Naga is on fire, she will Shed her skin in order to prevent further damage. The greatest attack of this form is Naga's ability to dig underneath the ground and erupt under a large group of players. If such happens all player in an 8x8 Tile Radius around the sight of erruption will recieve "Knockback" Damage.
Form 3: Once 50% has been reached, the Naga will fake players out, and fall to the ground. While this happens many small white snakes will emerge from the skin of Naga. Leaving the tail of the snake, however from this tail emerges a Humanoid female possessing four arms and four Schitmars, one in each hand. The boss will no longer attack with Ranged attacks, but now execute powerful Melee attacks to those near her. With a massive increase in Movement Speed, the Naga will strike her enemies with many Sword Styles: Blade Whirlwind, Bone Graveyard,and Serpent Strike. Once defeated Naga will finally die and melt away into a puddle of White Snakes and Bones.

- What draws you in more, a Boss Fight in which an enemy possesses various Tactics an execute them in battle. [I.E: Phantasy Star Online's Bosses, or, a Boss Fight in which an enemy has various forms which are exposed when specific Conditions are met?

There are many stereotypes, mainly the one I've been accustomed to is the large massive boss who transform into the small puny but stronger form. I don't neccessarly love it but I seen it many times to come accustomed to it.
Dialouge makes the boss better to fight, say if you drop the boss health down to 25% or lower the boss tries to reason with you or some realistic traits, but I don't like a whiny boss who says the cliche lines like
Impossible... beaten
NO! How'd did a puny squirtlike you beat me...
But something worth hearing.
I like a mixture of both the reasons that I like tactics is because it gives me a sort of realistic spin to it. Like the boss knows the current tactic their using isn't working hence the reason there health is dropping and hence their descion to use tactics. I do like transformation but something that maybe was foreshadowed not the cliche "I will now transform into something invincible that I just can do". Like maybe after a certain boss drops their health to a certain point, another boss comes along and kills the boss and you have to fight him. But I like how you laid your tactics out though.

1. The Boss transforming into a more stronger version etc is definitely something i have come accustomed to.
2. The animations in a boss fight make it fun as well as the difficulty of the boss. Bosses that are hard and prove to be a challenge to me is what i find a boss battle to be fun.

For an MMO boss, I like it when it takes a good number of people to take down. Being able to solo a hard boss at a low level completely takes away the fun of that boss. However, making it possible to eventually be able to solo a boss that used to be amazingly hard, now that feels good.
The boss Naga, is a Hidden Boss which reveals a new Personal Story Arc if the Player and his/her Party defeat her. The thing about the boss is that odds are a Player taking her on one on one will die within 3-4 Attacks. :'( For this game I really want Players to emphasize Strategy over Statistics and Skills to defeat opponents. So in all actuality a Player who sets up a good trap could put an end to this Demons life. Even David took down Goliath, but the odds that a Player will sit down and thing, hmm, If I tie this Wire to this bone, and attach it to a Explosion Tag, perhaps the demon will collide with the Wire and recieve the the blast of the explosion, will be unlikely. For normal Players Team Work is definatly needed, thus is expressed with the use of Team Work to solve the Puzzel need to Open the Bosses Lair. Hopefully Players will be challenged by this Boss, because obviously I have tried to make it as difficult as possible for a First Boss Monster.

We are in the 25% Stage: Writing Mission, Story Arcs, Coding Skills, but the system has been completed. I will release it in The Release something Thread when we get to the 50% Phase the Beta Phase. Anyways you will be able to download said MMO at TopHat-Games.net. However I would wait until I get some more screens and such uploaded.
