For part 3 of the RPG Maker VX Ace Giveaway, we need to vote on our favorite enemy sprite submission! Here is the original thread: http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/13734/
We asked the memberbase to sprite a NEW custom monster/enemy for an RPG. Here are the results. After you view them, vote on your favorite.

Link_2112 - Velocity Riptor
It's not perfect, but I'll come back to it soon and fix up a few things like the feet and his teeth. This guy will actually be used in my music game, Battle of the Bands. So most of what I talk about in his skills will be actualized.
Eventually I'd like to make bigger changes to it like making his guitar look way cool, and be full of scratches and damage(from his own claws). Maybe give him some shades, and a leather/denim jacket haha To give him some personality.

Name: Velocity Riptor
He comes from a universe where Dinosaurs not only survived, but evolved to shred like nobody's business. He is the lead guitarist for the band "The Carnivores". Nobody has survived a battle with these formidable reptiles.
With a heightened sense of hearing and uncanny ability to manipulate his digits at high speeds, he attempts to crush opponents by unleashing a wide variety of styles that always seem to come at the right counter frequency. He is quick to pick up on what the opponent is playing and knows how to adapt a good strategy for it. However, he becomes severely crippled if his senses are disrupted as his defense and recovery is very weak. He relies on his bandmates to help him in those situations.
Attacks
Shred - A flurry of notes meant to overwhelm the opponent.
Rip - A series of crunchy chords that rip through any kind of defensive sound barriers.
Emotional Solo - Adding the power of any fallen comrades, this wailing solo both soothes the band and leaves the opponent speechless for a moment.
Classical Interlude - A flowing wave of notes that greatly scatters any incoming sound waves.
Tectonic Scales - Ground shaking scales that often end up changing the landscape.
Volcanic Eruption - A burst of notes that consumes a large amount of energy, but creates utter devastation.
Extinction - Unknown. Nobody has lived to talk about it.
Special Talent
Evolution - Grow extra fingers and stronger arm muscles to increase shredding speed and power.
This was fun to work on and has really pushed my pixel abilities to new heights. Even if I don't win, I'll have gotten something out of this. I plan on trying to make at least one more of these, just not as big and detailed xD It took many hours.

Name: Cowardly Lion
There is a random chance to encounter this 'Beast' in any forest. Though he appears to be ferocious, he seems more interested in defending and attempting to escape then he is in attacking. The trick is to keep him in combat using snares, slows, sleeps, confuse..etc. If you can successfully keep him in combat for 10 rounds he'll join your party!

giaks - Gurges Bellator
Genre: Fantasy
Name: Gurges Bellator (Aquamancer) Female

About:
Homolluscans are a deep water dwelling race of humanoids. Using the four massive tentacles protruding from their backs they can glide through water at a remarkably brisk pace. Almost entirely aquatic homolluscans can survive for only a short time once outside sea water. An extremely intelligent and magical race, the homolluscan Aquamancers can bend the very will of the depths allowing them to cause devastating damage to enemies as well as aid their allies. A lifetime of training has made the homolluscan Bellator a fierce and deadly foe, they often craft weapons and armor from whale bone, and are trained to use their tentacles to both punish their enemies and protect themselves. Rarely traveling alone, small groups of homolluscans can occasionally be found alone coastal regions and islands. More often found in deep, open waters where they generally travel in schools of several hundred. Surrounding a ship and swimming around it in a series of complex rotations they are able to create a whirlpool. Once the ship has sunk they pillage it and move on, leaving any survivors to float or be swallowed by the depths. Sailors will often refer to them as Gurges Bellators meaning whirlpool warriors.
Side Notes:
I made this battler sprite using heavily modified components of default RPG Maker VX Ace RTP battlers. I had hoped maintain a RTP-coherent look while giving a unique presentation. I have uploaded the .xcf file to my locker, so if you want to see what battlers I used or even modify the color of her skin, hair, tentacles, eyes, or clothes feel free to download the .xcf file and play around with the different layers. You will probably need Gimp to open/edit the .xcf file. Links listed below...

*the lighting effect from the spell looks odd against a plain white background, I designed this while using a battle background and didn't notice how much the lighting stands out until now.

Gourd_Clae - Mystery Owl
Mine was more for fun than anything, but here it is:

Name: Mystery Owl
Mysterious owl with near unlimited magical potential. A powerful adversary despite its unfocused appearance, the sphere on the end of its tail channels its magic so that it's safe to be used on allies. Has an overwhelming light aura to it. Good at gathering a group of lesser monsters to sacrifice for magical power. Can only be defeated with attacks that simultaneously lower max HP. Tends to be slower due to it constantly calculating its next move.
Spells/Techniques
Fog - Make physical attacks useless and heighten all magic for the mysterious owl and the party.
Forest fire - Inflict burns on all units and inflict massive damage to party.
Tsunami Panic - Attack all units with water damage save for the mysterious owl.
Sacrificial Bolt - Attack an enemy unit for massive lightning damage at the cost of one of mysterious owl's allies.
Sacrificial Blaze - Attack an enemy unit for massive fire damage at the cost of one of mysterious owl's allies.
Sacrificial Tundra - Attack an enemy unit for massive ice damage at the cost of one of mysterious owl's allies.
Special Property:
The Above - Heals mysterious owl quicker than most damage can be inflicted.

Actually, this one is to fish. But still count as an enemy/monster, non?

Name: Finguy
Fish of a man's face
A kind of freshwater fish(?) which dwells in depths of cavern waters of Nusakana Island. They're docile in nature. In fact, they're dignified even compared to humans. People freak out as they speak in human tongue... and see them have a human face. No one knows why these lovecraft abominations even exist. Maybe the old Elvan magic did something to them? Their meat flavor resembles closely to human flesh... Eww...
As dignified as they are, they love pisces delicacies like other fishes do. But they demand a real high class meal, as they are picky gourmets. Once they find it, they cannot resist to get it, getting hooked or not.
They have low stamina, but they're still very smart to outwit their fisher. One slip and they'll escape for good, savoring their high class bait.
Techniques:
Quick Pulls: Strongly pulls the hook in rhythmic intervals. Worth for their low stamina to break the line considerably.
Pull!: The classic pulling as the other fishes do. They have a considerable power despite they tire easily. Weak rods beware.
L'astuce pour échapper: Submit to their reeler's power. But actually, they're working to release the hook from themselves. Miss your timing for this and you'll lose both the finguy and your exquisite bait. They're intelligent indeed.

I don't know if this is allowed but.. here's my submission..(If it is not allowed then it's okay, I did this for fun and maybe a chance to win.)

Name: Octhosevil
Origin: It is created by us, through our imagination. Some knows it's there, some don't. It all depends on your mind, whether sane or insane. It is harmless yet harmful..Whether you see it as a threat or not, it's up to you. Decide with your heart, never avoid it as it is always there..whether you sense it or not.
Motive: Unknown
Genre of game: Horror, I'm planning on making a horror game like Ib, Mad father, etc. So this guy is part of the monsters which the player will encounter and the only thing the player can do is to face his/her own darkness.
And that's my entry..(Again if this isn't allowed then please tell me. New to this)
Edit: I had lots of fun editing this so maybe you guys could comment on how it is and how to improve... xD

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I really want to like the guitar raptor, because oh my god it's a freakin' guitar raptor, but the tentacle monster and the lion are much better sprites at much more usable sizes.
I should point out for non-RMXP users that the serpent maiden is an RTP edit, but that doesn't actually make it ineligible to win, and it's a pretty good one (the only parts of it I can directly recognize from the RTP are the shield and the wings). However, if the idea is for the player to be able to dispatch the two enemies seperately, this sprite isn't actually usable the way the artist intended. You'd need at least two sprites, maybe three if the combined version is different from just the other two overlaid on top of each-other.
The shadow monster, Octhosevil, is definitely not usable in RPG Maker in its current form. Get rid of the black shadow around it and maybe it will be, though I'd probably also want to cut its size in half if it were me. It would go along well with these monsters.

author=LockeZFor the record, the image used up there is at x2. It's still fairly large, but not THAT large.

And it doesn't have shading yet. Or clothes. Never got around to doing all that extra stuff. I can only blame myself for not making it as good as it could be.
xD I'm just gonna wait for the results, looking at the comments that may show some love for Octhosevil xD
Edit:
I have one without the background so it's okay I guess. I just wanted to give it a little more creepiness, you know? xD
I would resize it if it's too big, but it may take some time so..yeah..

Voting is fun, however I enjoy talking about stuffs too...here are my thoughts. I'd be interested in hearing what everyone else thinks as well. What did everyone like/dislike about the sprites?
Velocity Riptor
Gurgest Bellator
Mystery Owl
Finguy
Aklanz
Octhosevil
Cowardly Lion
Serpent Maiden
I feel that given the right game and the right style these are all really good.
Velocity Riptor
A really good concept and a great name! I really enjoy the art style Link presented here. The lines are clear, the colors are good. I like how straight forward the different body parts are, this would be a great sprite to rig up and animate. The shading is the only thing I'd like to see more of, only because I feel there is a lack of synergy between the body and the face. The face just has so much more detail.
Gurgest Bellator
This one was of course mine. I think I did an alright job translating the original picture used for inspiration to a VX Ace sprite. I think the hair stands out a bit to much with the outline, the lighting from the flare could maybe be a bit over powering, and it does look RTP...who isn't a little tired of looking at RTP type battlers.
Mystery Owl
The colors are really good, they provide some nice contrast. I feel like this could slide into 2k3 very neatly. The tail looks a bit strange. I personally think the face looks awesome, almost mechanical. Very cool.
Finguy
The video that inspired this sprite was crazy. I think this sprite is super well done, every time I look at it I think about that crazy video. I like how strong the lines are, the personality given to the face is really good. I think this would make a great sprite for a side view battle system. My only thoughts on how to improve this one is don't link the video haha.
Aklanz
This is another sprite that would be great for a side view battle system. I had the opportunity to crop this one so I got to see the larger original scan. That being said I think the only thing I'd change on this is the resize. It is a bit fuzzy, playing around with different resize settings I'm sure that would be fixed. I like how straight forward the entire sprite is. This is another sprite that could be easliy rigged up and animated.
Octhosevil
The style of this sprite could be very fun when applied throughout an entire game. Fun expression, creative idea, the colors all go well together well, and fair symmetry. It is very dark on my monitor, the background has already been discussed. I think this is a very fun sprite.
Cowardly Lion
The colors go together well, the sprite looks more or less solid. There is a little bit of mirroring which is something I try to stay away from, it seems to work alright on this sprite however. The shadow is maybe a little bit blocky(that's a word right?).
Serpent Maiden
The wings and shield definitely stand out, I think because the colors are so plain. The sprite itself isn't bad, I feel like green and yellow on a dragon type creature is maybe a bit to typical, still it works. Over all I think the color usage is my only issue with this, not a lot of risks taken, still not a bad presentation.
I feel that given the right game and the right style these are all really good.
Yeah, the face does have more detail, because that is one part that was mostly a reference. I kept the detail from the original pic, but cleaned it up and made some adjustments. The guitar is the other thing that is mostly reference. Everything else was drawn freestyle.
I made the face first, and worked those complicated patterns which are pretty close to what was on the reference image. Then I couldn't think of a way to do the same thing/I didn't feel like going into that much detail for the entire body so I did those basic triangles. And I never got around to doing shading, because I felt it was good enough to enter into the contest.
I'm actually starting to feel the drawing bug hit me again, so I will update near the end of the voting with shading, hair/clothes, and I'll do something about those complicated face patterns. Animating will have to be a different day haha but I do want to animate all my sprites.
Thanks for your feedback! The name literally wrote itself. Veloci Raptor...Velocity Riptor. Ripping up the guitar at high speed, heh I can't take credit for the concept though, I was discussing my game with a friend and he thought up a raptor playing guitar. Since it's a game about music, the battles will take place between bands. So I'm working on a full set of dino rockers. T-Rex on keyboard, maybe Triceretops on drums, not sure about the others yet but I'm looking forward to designing them. It's my first time attempting character/enemy design.

@Giaks Thanks for saying something about the colors, I was a little worried I did a bad job, but that's encouraging. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention the tail and fire's lack of colors compared to the head and body. Those were a bit slapstick because I was getting a little upset that I didn't know how to properly sprite what I wanted. I did eventually get a certain semblance of it, but the fire and tail were a little beyond what I could do. The tail was supposed to have crystal ball type ornament that was a slightly transparent blue. The fire is fire and since I've never sprited something like that before frustration ensued.
Don't get me wrong though, the majority of the spriting was fun and seeing that I have at least some capacity to sprite what I want was pleasing.

It's fun making this guy(is it wrong to see this guy as a cute little monster?)

The fire could probably use some work, though I do think it fits the picture alright. The orb is probably my second favorite part of the sprite(aside from the head). I don't think the orb was cropped completely in the image above, when that purple is transparent it has a really cool, hollow faux 3D look to it. It's just the orb as the tail that looks odd to me, the orb itself looks great I think.

I know. I decided not to vote for anyone, even myself. So that it will be fair, there are other entries I would like to vote for but I want to remain as neutrel and let people other than the creators of the sprites to vote.
By the way, I voted for Gurges Bellator. The only thing I wasn't big on in that was the hair. I think it was the shading?
I'm curious. Who voted for me?

You do realize that by not voting, you are accomplishing nothing. All of the other creators have probably already voted.

That may be true but least it's better than voting for myself which accomplishes nothing considering I'll be the only who voted for myself so there's no point in that and if I do vote for others, I would have a lot of trouble choosing, I mean look at all those different sprites, I can't just choose either one. It's hard to vote so it at least better to not choose than to regret later on. I don't really care if mine has 0 votes, it's better than to give false hopes by voting for myself. Unless the world works in a weird way and suddenly there's more votes on mine then sure but that's unlikely.
