hello people,
I'm new to this so please speak in very short and easy to understand words. I understand you will use technical words and abbreviations like they are everyday normal words, but I am at day one, so be slower than usual for me.
I've signed up here on behalf of my 9 year old son. He loves games to the moon and back and would love to know how to make one. I started playing games about 30 years ago on an Atari 2600 woodie, then had a big break until Playstation. I played on and off for years and thought I was reasonably good. Skip forward to about 3 years ago when my son showed interest. In the summer he first held a playstation pad. By Christmas that year he could beat me at any Gran turismo course, and could play any game without instructions.
This, I think, is his future. He is not into sports, unless it's in a game. He can play chess, and loves Monopoly. Him favourite characters are Mario and Sonic, but often says "If I made this game i'd make this happen", or "I'd like to be able to do this now". Can anyone here help me to help him create his own game.

My first piece of advise is to start simple! Attempting something grand right off the bat without knowing much of anything isn't going to go well for a "first-time game".
thanks. Is there any software you can suggest to get started with? They all look the same to me. Preferably a free one to get started with.

Well, if your son likes Mario, there's a (FREE) engine for making your own old-school (think NES/SNES Mario games) Mario levels. It's called Super Mario Bros. X and it's pretty cool. Though it can be rather confusing until you get the hang of it and it's also kind of... weird when it comes to some things, but overall it's pretty cool once you understand how to use it.
Edit: And for more info on it you can look at this...
Oh, and Welcome!
My favorite Atari 2600 games were Phoenix, SeaQuest and Super Breakout. I never understood what the hell was going on in Yar's Revenge.
Welcome to RMN (RPG maker network)!

Download 2k3 and the RTP to make a CMS or at least tweak the DBS so that you're down with OPP. Word to your mother.

Sounds like him and I are going to be the bestest of friends. Oh, yes! The bestest of friends, indeed - Muhahahahahahaha!!!
And, like wildwes pointed out, your son would probably absolutely love to use the Super Mario Bros. X engine to create some of his own custom Mario levels and share them with all his pals and everyone here on the site. I'm not sure if he's into any role playing games, and what not, but there is also RPG Maker VX Ace, which is pretty easy to understand and use and comes with a ton of its own resources bundled in with the RTP. There's also a thirty day trail for the software. So if he ends up liking it or not, you can just pay for the full version. If he doesn't, then you won't have to pay a penny. ^^
